Sunsets and love felt much the same to Sakito, always a dazzling end no matter how passed the previous hours. And he knew love, knew it as only one trained life-long in the delicate art could know. Ephemeral, heavenly, any such word he might use for his patrons’ affections would be appropriate for the young samurai whose hand had written the letter, though Sakito had prayed for solidity.
Pipe smoke curled into the fading light from the window, framing his sorrowful elegance, or so Sakito imagined. His finger brushed over the name a final time before the letter dropped to his silk-clad knees. Ah, Niya, he sighed.
