"Under the Stars"
She remembers them best when they're all under the stars; bikes quiet and everything peaceful. There's the hushed talks and quick kisses, small smiles and lingering fingers. Nothing but them in an expanse of desert and cactus trees, where no one dares to bother them because everyone knows, fears...
Varmints; Jessie laughs at the thought. Clay laughs too, but he has no idea.
It's dark now, only rather than watching the night sky with her girls she's with her brother. He insisted she come see him at the temple -- letter after letter after letter -- so she did, making sure that she left her bike behind and took the Wings of Tinabi instead. For his nerves' sake.
It's silent now too. Jessie does nothing but poke at the marshmallows in her cocoa (yes, Clay made cocoa; she was surprised herself), watching them dip and bob.
Her brother clears his throat: "Uh, Jessie? I was just wondering if you'd--" He pauses and she doesn't know why. So she looks up.
He looks stern, it's unnerving.
She smirks at him, because it's not like her to smile. She still hates him, after all; if only just a little bit.
"Now what are ya babblin' about?" Jessie drawls. She takes a sip of her cocoa.
Clay breathes, loudly. Jessie tries her best to look into his eyes --big and blue and soft-- but they're hidden under the brim of his hat and that mop of blond.
After only a moment: "...I'd like it if you would come stay at the temple, Jessie." He gives her a small smile as his finger circles the rim of his cup. "I reckon the others would too."
She stares at him for a long while, hand shaky against the cup's handle. "Darnit!" She hears herself yell, standing up faster than she can think. Her hands fumble for the Wings of Tinabi, still propped up against the table leg; and she thinks of her girls. The Shen Gong Wu points to the sky.
She doesn't dare look back at her brother, or else she would have seen the confusion and worry that passes through his now-visible eyes.
She growls. He watches her leave.
"There's no place I'd rather be."
