THE SOUND OF QUESTION? (a pimp post of sorts :P) PART 1

Jul 13, 2008 22:14

It’s Question?!

I’ve decided to make a pimp post on the sound of Question? because I think they deserve more recognition than they actually have right now, even as a junior group in the company. I know that there’s already a really awesome pimp post on these boys already, done by deepintoblue, but because I love them so much I’d like try to elevate their status and recognition even more. You’ll probably find that there are repetitive points and information, but I’ve done my best to include things that you won’t usually find around the internet about Question? and the activities that they’re up to. I hope that with this introductory post you’ll be even more interested in these boys and support them because they’re just too awesome to pass.

I’ve been planning for this pimp post for quite some time already, and I finally got around to doing it. It can get wordy at times but I’ve done my best to put pictures everywhere so it can be more... visual. I hope you enjoy the post :D

You’ve probably seen Question? performing at the very shaded part of the stage in Shounen Club as your Tokyo juniors prance about the stage singing to their senpais’ songs (“Beeeeee ambitiousssssssss...” oh, Kawai!). But Question? is more than a band for Shounen Club - they’ve gone on to release singles and stage their own plays (Seishun Den-deke-deke-deke 青春デンデケデケデケ), which is pretty commendable for a junior band in Johnny’s Entertainment that’s only been around for 4 years or so.

Question? is a band unit, supposedly modeled after TOKIO. They started performing in May 2004 and was then led by M.A.D. member Noda Yuya as the lead guitarist, Yonemura Daijiro as the lead vocalist and guitar, Fujiie Kazuyori as bassist and Yodogawa Yoshihiro as drummer.

Question? took over FiVe’s responsibility to play in Shounen Club in early 2005 and have since come up with their own original songs. In summer 2005, FiVe’s keyboardist Ishigaki Daisuke joined Question? and they were pretty much a “full unit” like TOKIO.

On October 2005, after one last performance of Precious Memories, Noda Yuya left the unit to rejoin his previous unit M.A.D., which was reformed, alongside junior unit Kis-My-Ft2. His departure led to Igo Akun as the newest addition to Question?, but he didn’t appear with the unit on Shounen Club until April 2006.

Question? has had their own live concerts, one with Noda Yuya in September 2005, and three in 2007 called “You Gotta Rock”. They’ve starred in a play called Seishun Den-deke-deke-deke (青春デンデケデケデケ) and collaborated with their senior Kondo Masahiko, otherwise known as Matchy, to form the temporary unit MATCHY with QUESTION?. A pretty fruitful journey for them even as juniors, don’t you think?

I think, for Question?, playing for their seniors’ concerts is a great privilege for them (KAT-TUN, Hey! Say! JUMP, etc...), but then they’re always hidden in the dark, playing, and that’s not good enough. I’ve always had great respect for bands who can play their own instruments and I’ve always believed that they’re the ones who can last longer than the other bands who don’t because they’re able to sustain their own music and create it at their own will. But till now, Question? doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere, and I think that’s a really great pity, which explains again why I've decided to create this post!

Because I’m such a sucker for organizing things like Virgos although I’m really a Sagittarius (LIKE YORI), in this post, I’ve kind of split up everything into little divisions so you can get around to things more easily:

♥ MEMBER PROFILES
♥ SEISHUN DEN-DEKE-DEKE-DEKE
♥ MATCHY WITH QUESTION?
♥ SHOUNEN CLUB (AND OTHER PERFORMANCES/APPEARANCES)
♥ QUESTION? .MP3 RIPS & SONGS, ETC
♥ QUESTION? IN MAGAZINES
♥ USEFUL LINKS
♥ CREDITS
♥ ALSO CHECK OUT…

And yes I used the Virgo-Sagittarius comparison just so I could say “LIKE YORI” :P

SEISHUN DEN-DEKE-DEKE-DEKE 青春デンデケデケデケ

Seishun Den-deke-deke-deke is an adaptation of Sunao Ashihara’s novel which won the Naoki Prize in 1991. The story follows a group of high school students in the ‘60s who form a rock band styled after the American band The Ventures. I love saying the title over and over again - Seishun Den-deke-deke-deke-deke-deke and I’ll never know when to stop because I don’t know if I’ve already said “deke” three times”. The “den-deke-deke-deke” part is supposed to mimic the sound of the tremolo and the glissandi of The Ventures' "Pipeline".

In the play, Question? plays very unique characters:

Yone as Chikura - the son of a teacher,
Yori as Fujio - the heir of a Buddhist temple,
Yodo as Okushita - whose family owns a fishcake factory,
Akun as Shirai - whose family owns a fish market, and
Gaki as Taniguchi - the son of a doctor.

Question? deepen their bond - first time leading actors in a stageplay

The five boys of Johnny's Junior group Question? opened their new stageplay "Seishun Dendekedekedeke" on March 5th in Tokyo's "Le Theatre Ginza".

The play is based on the Naoki award-winning novel by the same name which in the past has also been adapted for a movie. The five boys play the roles of highschool students living in Kagawa (a prefecture on the smallest of Japanese main islands, Shikoku) in the 1960s who get really passionate about their band. Though everyone caught the flu during the rehearsals, Fujiie Kazuyori (22) said it deepened their bond even further. At the end they also announced a special live concert, and Yonemura Daijirô (22) proudly added: "We've grown up, and we also managed to create a great sound."

President Johnny Kitagawa of their agency Johnnys Jimusho announced: "The stageplay will become a good experience for them, and I want to increase their musical activities." He is also thinking of letting them do a concert tour this spring.

The performance at Le Theatre Ginza will continue until the 13th, after a break it will continue on the 23rd at the Hyogo Performing Arts Center.

WELLS JOHNNY YOU IS A LOT OF LOVE FOR GIVING THESE BOYS THIS CHANCE! *thumbsup*

There aren’t a lot of videos on the play that you can watch, but HatenaPenguin in YouTube has a few awesome videos of some of their promotional interviews and shows and such that you might be interested in checking out:

You’ll get to find out who complains about the bass (with Yori displaying immediate defence ♥), who stole the role of prancing about naked from who and the dreams of each member for the band, among many other things! You’ll also get to see a little bit of Question? in school uniform and I’m only saying this because boys in uniform = ♥ x ∞ TYVM.

These clips load really fast and trust me you’ll find that you’ll tend to keep coming back to watch the same old things again because they’re so cute. I find that my mouth is always shaped in this fascinated grin when I watch and yeah that’s pretty much how Question? makes me feel every time I see them in action!

These clips, like Ike-men, load really fast too so you won’t be worrying about how long they’ll take to load and things like that and be all “OKAY THIS IS SO SLOW I REALLY WANNA SEE QUESTION? RIGHT NOW LIKE NOW LIKE NOW”.

The host talks a lot though, but it’s okay as long as they’re there I think it’s awesome enough!

Question? being all awkward about promoting their play
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2GEs8TIBw9Q
You get to appreciate the boys more with this video because they’re so awkward and nervous and they just start babbling and teasing each other about the nonsense that comes out of their mouth and it’s just too endearing to not watch!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=RL8VQcR9mAA
In this little clip you’ll be able to see the boys talk a bit about the play, and the whole video is especially win at the end where Yone attempts to sum up the whole event!

Must-see! A little preview with Question? playing “Pipeline” by The Ventures
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wCCQ8Nxgw0g
This has got to be one of my most favourite videos of Question? because they sound so good and you can hear them playing in the background as Gaki talks and everything and they just sound soooooo goooooooooooooooooooood... *wistful sigh* In fact I’ve got this playing on the background on repeat while I’m typing the whole of this post out! Okay come to think of it it’s really lame to have this on repeat, but they sound nearly as good as the original song :D That is how much this video is win. It makes you think, “Wow, if Question? can play as well as old rock ‘n’ roll bands like The Ventures and The Shadows, they’re pretty damn awesome.”

If you’re interested in listening to the original “Pipeline” from The Ventures, I’ve uploaded it and you can download it here from Mediafire:

Go ahead and do your own comparison :D

You’ll be able to find more videos related to the play if you keep clicking different videos in under “Related Links” - it kinda depends on luck sometimes but they don’t really have that many promotional videos on the play on YouTube so you’ll be able to catch on easily :D Seishun Den-deke-deke-deke is quite forgotten now, but I’m really happy these guys staged this play.

MATCHY WITH QUESTION?

MATCHY with QUESTION? is a special, one-off unit between Kondo Masahiko (aka Matchy) and Question?. They released the single Mezamero! Yasei (目覚めろ!野性) in January 23, 2008 to serve as the ending theme for the anime Naruto Shippuuden.

Mezamero! Yasei (目覚めろ!野性) was released in two versions; a limited edition containing a DVD and a Naruto sticker, and a regular edition including a 12-page booklet as a first press bonus. The single also includes a cover of Midnight Shuffle, the 39th solo single of Kondo Masahiko (this was in 1996).

This was an amazing chance for Question? because, for those of you who aren’t aware, Matchy was really hot. Like, really hot. If any of you have watched this particular Domoto Kyodai (okay I checked, this episode is dated 2004.09.05, very vintage lol) episode where Nagase Tomoya was the guest and there was this segment called “Best Hits Domoto” you’ll get to see how Matchy performed when he was younger and this board where alllllllllllll his singles are on in (it looks like a quilt because there are so many singles and they’re all squares put together side by side). At the end Nagase Tomoya did an awesome cover of “GINGIRAGIN NI SARIGENAKU” with the band on Domoto Kyoudai and it was really pretty and I would totally love to go on to say how awesome it is but then I’ll be digressing so…

The whole point of that is to show how big Matchy is, and how Question? got a chance to collaborate with such a (once) celebrated star in their company. A big thumbs-up to the boys and to Matchy (because he can feel youthful once again with 5 young boys around him).

Although it was a temporary unit, it’s still awesome for Question? :D

I’ve uploaded the two single songs you can download them separately here:

I seriously thought I was in for good fun when I first watched this film but sadly this making lasts for as long as the song plays, and you can only really hear the boys talk in like less than quarter of the total video. Other than that, it’s still good that there is even a making for this song. You’ll get to see a bit of the boys practising in the studio with all of their instruments, and although you can’t really hear them play, it’s still awesome to be able to witness that sight because they’re, you know, essentially a band, and when you see a band get together to practise and play, it makes you feel as though they’re that close and that serious about making everything work. In the first part it’s just pretty much filming and nothing else although there are a few good things to look out for - the five boys in the recording studio singing “MEZAMERO! YASEI” together, Yori being passionate on the piano, etc. You get to hear them talk, but only for a little while, at the end of the video but no prizes for guessing who speaks the most in the end :D

I seriously didn't mean to catch Gaki like that, I swear!

MATCHY with QUESTION? on Utaban 2008.01.24
One of the greatest videos that there is out there of Question? with Matchy! I can't seem to find a link in YouTube, but if I'm not mistaken, there is a subbed video of their talk in newshfan's list of subbed videos!

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH THE VIDEO:

QUESTION? MAKES A COOL ENTRANCE BY EMERGING FROM BEHIND, AS IF ON CUE, WHEN MATCHY AND THE HOSTS BEGIN TO TALK ABOUT THEM.

THEIR ENDEARING ANXIETY IS REFLECTED IN THEIR STIFF BODY LANGUAGE.

AND YORI DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHICH CAMERA TO LOOK AT ♥

WHEN ASKED TO INTRODUCE THEIR SONG, THERE ARE SO MANY AWKWARD PAUSES LIKE "Matchy wizu... [awkward pause] Q...Question?!"

And Nakai says they look like they're in a funeral :O

THE INFAMOUS "UI~" FROM YORI ♥

AND THE COMFORTING HUG AKUN ENVELOPES YORI IN ♥

OH YES ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Utaban goodness aside, now here's why you should also watch MATCHY with QUESTION? on Music Station 2008.01.25:

YODO THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO SING ABOUT VEGETABLES.

AND MATCHY IS JUST LIKE "STFU TALK TO MY HAND AND WATCH US!"
