Conan and Kaito!

Okay, the thing to understand is Conan took a while to suspect who Kaito was. When he first arrived to the Island, Kaito pretty much gave Conan a heart attack. Why? Because Kaito looks almost exactly like Shinichi and that's just freaky to see. However, Conan recovered and went on kid mode and did his usual song and dance, not knowing that Kaito knows he's really a more serious kidlet. However, it didn't take long for Conan to figure out Kaito was a bit more clever than his usual joking, laid back nature might lead him to believe. Then they got all :T at each other and then Conan was adopted into Kaito and Kazuha's room.

For a while, Conan did think of Kaito as a pretty nice, if a jerk, of a guy. Of course, while consciously Conan wanted to be CAREFUL around Kaito because he was pretty sure he was smarter than he first appeared, there was something about him that made...well, want to snark at him. Just a natural inclination to be a smart ass and not give Kaito the last word and he kind of failed with his kid act for the first part which he'd berate himself for. (Not knowing it was kind of useless anyway since Kaito knew he wasn't normal anyway.)

Then Angel event happened and acting like a kidlet when there's DANGER is impossible for Conan. And while Conan fights to protect his secret, he absolutely REFUSES to let someone die because of it. Which was why, for the sake of their safety, when it was Kaito's turn to not blink, he gave him his glasses. Because they have electronic binoculars in them.

And no prescription lenses.

Yeeeeeah, he knew it was giving away a lot when he did it, especially since he made a big deal about his glasses not being taken away in their FIRST meeting, which pretty much gave away he had some weird complex with them. Kaito recognized this, of course, which added another little mystery about the 'tantei-kun.' Though Kaito ended up returning the favor when they got to a cliff. He used a white hang glider, but more than that, he said they would both have to answer some questions.

Before this occurred, the idea of Kaito being Kid HAD entered Conan's mind. Mostly because he knew it was the second Kid this time around and the timing with the first Kid and Toichi along with other factors made him suspicious. However, there wasn't near enough to have a conviction for it. Just an idea that he toyed with a bit and didn't seriously consider as an option until he saw the white hang glider. Because, really, who else walks around with a white hang glider and not have it be obvious they're carrying one at all? He can only think of one person who'd be well practice in it since it's hard to use a hang glider as just a normal stage magician. Add in all the other factors that would make Kaito a prime suspect and he became more or less certain of it.

Thus his deduction show with Kaito and his reaction gave him all he needed as confirmation. He wasn't worried if he was wrong. If he was, then it would only be giving Kaito information that anyone could get if they chased Kid enough. With the confirmation that Kaito was indeed Kid, how Conan viewed Kaito altered dramatically.

By this point, Kaito was just another teenager. A smart and pretty good guy, but eccentricities aside, he was NORMAL. And normal is not trust worthy. Normal so easily succumbs to fear and pressure and the darker emotions in humanity. Basically, if there was a murder and Kaito was a possible suspect, Conan would look at him as being the murder just as much as any other suspect until he found proof otherwise. It takes a while before someone is immediately stricken from his suspect list (unless he found proof they DID do it and couldn't find any way to refute it) and Kaito was not going to get that for a while. Especially since it's very hard for anyone to do that while Conan is still...well, Conan. (Paranoid little bugger that he is.)

But Kaitou Kid on the other hand...

First things first. Conan is absolutely INSANE on Kid heists. He will do crazy things to try and catch Kid. However, he also highly respects Kid. While at the beginning, all he saw was 'criminal. Must catch.' And really only paid attention to a thief because he made challenging riddles, that changed over time. Soon it became that Conan honestly enjoyed heists. Not just because they were a challenge, but because they were a SAFE challenge. Morbid sense of humor and enjoying solving murders aside, there's only so many dead bodies a person can see before it gets to them. Kid is his break from that. A crime where he can go all out mentally and not have to worry about people dying because if Kid has a say, it's NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

Of course, sometimes it does, in which case the criminal is utterly screwed as they get BOTH Conan and Kid after their hide, but that's something else entirely.

A thing to note is Conan wouldn't let a criminal get away. Normally. It doesn't matter if someone saved his life or did anything like that. If someone committed a crime, he's turning them in. Hopefully he can convince them to turn themselves in and accept what they did was wrong, but he'd still do it. Of course, it's rare he doesn't chase someone who didn't kill someone.

Yet he has let Kid walk away without a fight. MORE THAN ONCE. This says a lot of things. It says that one, he doesn't see Kid as evil. It shows he has a high respect for Kid. More than that, he trusts Kid to handle himself in a dangerous job. He even says it once, that Kid can handle a rather brutal armed person. But more than anything, it says he TRUSTS Kid. He trusts Kid to never go over the edge. He trusts Kid to do, ultimately, the right thing that doesn't involve whether or not he's stealing a jewel.

And while Conan hasn't gone through the latest heist, it's a perfect example of his trust. The last heist Conan went through, Kid has tazed him because he needed to hide the jewel and passed out Conan was the perfect spot. Which did really annoy Conan and he showed how he's just willing to have fun on a heists since, instead of trying to knock Kid out, he chose just to stick a note on his back and make him run around for a while for revenge for THAT. He knew more than likely Kid would get away, but it was more satisfying than catching him. However, despite this kind of aggressive move, Conan is STILL willing to let Kid walk as in the latest heist. He just lets Kid walk away DESPITE knowing who he was, having a tracker on him he missed so he could just lead the police to him without him knowing. Why? Because his mom is a fan of Ryoma. While conan hasn't gone through it, he has the SAME MINDSET to do it.

This is important for several things. It still reaffirms the fact Conan doesn't think Kid will get more aggressive than knocking someone out. More than that, it actually shows that Conan doesn't actually care if Kid figures him out. Why? Because he tells Kid where his mother was born and that acted in the role of Ryoma's elder sister. Now, while this doesn't seem much, I will point out Conan has a high respect for Kid's abilities. And one of Kid's known traits is being so good, he can fool family. The fact he mentioned that one, his mother was/is an actor, and two was born in Tosa are two very big clues. And Kid has disguises both as Mouri Ran and Mouri Kogoro and Kudo Yukiko is a family friend. While it's no guarantee that Kid will find out all this, it still seems a bit too much for Conan to provide for Kid unless he simply didn't care if Kid found him out or not. Though note, COnan hasn't actually gone through this heist, but it was the next one he was to appear in before he came to the Island and his opinion has no reason to change in canon.

In short, Kuroba Kaito doesn't have his trust. Kaitou Kid has more or less his complete trust to be a good guy. Kid has been through all the stress of having people after him, so he knows that Kid isn't likely to cave and either sell him out or kill someone. Kuroba Kaito didn't have that.

Now that he knows the Kuroba Kaito=Kaitou Kid, Kaito has that trust. Which was why Conan more or less told Kaito he was Kudo Shinichi. Of course, they played the telling, but not quite telling game, but he was fine with that. It was par to the course. He also told Kaito he wanted to catch Kid in a real heist, which is true. Since Kid is more about having a fun challenge without someone having to die, it didn't seem imperative to try and catch him outside of a heist. He wasn't going to do anything bad, so there was no reason to cut the enjoyment short.

Then Hakuba came. And he was kind of hit 'can I really keep silent?' Of course, that little conflict only lasted temporarily. Conan had decided not to do so then, wanting to properly think about it first, but then Hakuba was a jerk, which got him really annoyed, and then he got mad when Hakuba started poking and prodding his issues so there was a high chance he might not have told him ANYWAY except talking to Hakuba made him realize possible connections.

So he kind of just forgot the 'let's not admit straight out' game and dragged Kaito to the Golden Land to have a chat in which they realize there's a very high chance their cases are linked. (And really, Gosho is trolling us if they aren't with all those connections.) Which as elevated Kaito from possibly being someone to go to for help if absolutely necessary straight up to full ally. Because if Kaito's goal is the same as his, he's not gonna feel a bit of guilt in asking him for help.

It also means he's probably gonna let Kaito go on a heist if he ever DID catch him. Not that he'll admit it until it happens, but that's what he's decided. No reason to make Kaito an easy target and lose an ally because he has to go in hiding, after all. But that doesn't mean he's not gonna give Kaitou Kid hell during a heist anyway. (And he would make good on the promise to track down Kaito and soccer ball him if Kaito EVER tazes him again.)

So, in conclusion, Kaito is now full ally and has Conan's complete trust. (Or as complete as it ever is with conan.) He trusts Kaito to do the right thing and to be able to take care of himself.

...and again, the two will probably always snark and mess with each other. Because where's the fun in stopping?
