I don't know why it's shocking that John McCain compared Purim and Halloween--both have costumes, and I've made the argument that the psychology behind both are similar. And shalach manot are very much like Christmas cookies--both are about making goodies and sharing them with people. And Succot and Christmas trees.
The thing is--if you look at the meanings of different holidays, they are very different. But the expressions--decorating, costumes, giving food--are the same. Which I find very interesting, indeed. I would like to believe that these are universal psychological expressions that show up in different forms, but do show up.
