I worked on the stays again today. I have fabric failures all over the place and now I'm regretting the very narrow wares I used to bind the stays. It would have been at least annother couple layers before I had to think about re- working.
As it stood, I couldn't avoid re doing. And in the future, If I make stays, I'll go to the trouble of coutil. Perhaps not the period solution, but making a slightly more durable good than a plain ol' bedsheet. I decided to pick up some chamois, since I don't have any sufficiently lightweight leather in the house. Leather I have, but nothing flexible enough.
I am really regretting using the teal for stitching casings, as it would have looked *rockass* with the chamois and the goldenrod. But alas, I had too much faith in free fabric, and lo, I have paid the price. I won't re do the tabs. If I have to go that far, I'll just make a new set!
I whiped up a petticoat with some pleats on a tape, so that's done. I also left a piece big enough to do a stomacher in plain gray. My instinct tells me this Is Not Period, but alas, this fabric begged for this composition. And my waist will be thanking me, because I may look like I have one temporarily. Even if it's along the same lines as: "If you have a headache, I'll stomp your foot and you'll forget all about it."
The blue is a test fit. I am actually to the point where my stash has odd enough lots that I have "spare" wool to do test cuts. I'll prolly just stick this on the inside of the stripe so I don't feel so wasteful. I still need to figure out sleeves though. Not looking forward to that in light of the armscye shape of the back piece.
See that bit where they have points at the back of the arm? A round sleeve head won't be fitting in that square hole. I don't know how to solve that problem, so I'll have to ponder somemore. You can also see how I have this wonderful point in the center back that's all smutzed up by the pleated waist of the petticoat. You may also notice I need another petticoat. I'll be making that one in the black suiting that failed to make the original cut. I may even go crazy and have a center back that remains unpleated so this effect isn't made worse.
I also discovered that the entire reason for me making this gettup is several days sooner than I had originally guessed. Here's to hoping the polonaise bit of the skirt isn't rocket science.
