I mean, really, the committee originated as a result of Dubya's OWN executive order, he picks all the members, so of course they have to follow his ordained agenda, sort of like the commission invesitgating Iraqi intelligence (oxymoron). As long as scientific research remains dependent on federal funding, they will be at the mercy of political manipulation. Remember "Contact"? What will need to happen, and probably has already somewhere, is that a private financier will fund research in a country where ethics aren't as federally regulated.
By the by, I loved the article on John Edward, it breaks my heart that one of my close friends, whom I thought to be pretty level-headed, is spending money and time to see him in New York in April. Grief pulls people in unexpected directions.
