It would indeed defy laws of physics to come from that angle. Either it's a goof or the monster carried it from Liberty Island and threw it when it was closer...which sounds a little silly, though if I was a giant monster, and I bit off the head of the Statue of Liberty, I'd totally spit it out once I realized how disgusting it tasted (ever taste copper? Blech!)
