CHARACTER
» Name: Jango. You can also go with Django, it sounds the same either way.
» Fandom: One Piece
» References you can use:
http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Jango» Canon Point: After Marineford
» Gender: Male
» Age: Unknown. Adult. Probably 30s or 40s.
» Sexual Orientation: We do know Jango can find women hot easily. (He joined the marines mostly for Hina's sake.) But I stick by the fandom theory that he's more gay than not. Even if he's a little in denial sometimes.
» Appearance: With pale hair (kind of dirty blond-grey) Jango always wears a hat. Either a marine cap or a widebrimmed hat that matches his trench coat. (As a Rocket he just wears the black cap that comes with the uniform.) He keeps his eyes hidden behind heart-shaped sunglasses and this is because as it turns out, his eyes are heart-shaped. (No one said he wasn't weird.) In early canon Jango wore a long trench coat with rings like his chakram that he uses to hypnotize people, but as a marine he wears flashy print shirts (like Fullbody.) He has several Michael Jackson references going for him, (gloves, socks, moonwalking), but also Elton John's heart-sunglasses.
He has a red and black striped "goatee" that is in fact the stem of a mushroom. He grew a mushroom on his chin from poor bathing habits. (ew ew ew) And while he ate the cap of the mushroom, it tasted disgusting so he left the rest there. This is also why he can perform hypnotism. (No one said One Piece was a sane series.)
» Fighting Ability: Through his dancing, Jango has fluid movements and can deal with most low-level pirate threats. He's capable of hypnotizing friends and foes and putting them to sleep or making them stronger. However, if he doesn't remember to pull the brim of his hat down, he'll hypnotize himself the exact same way (usually sleep.) It's fairly easily avoided (as hypnotism generally is if you wish it to be) and he precedes commands with "1, 2, Jango!" so someone could always look away. However, his hypnotism rings/pendulums double as razor sharp chakrams that he can use to cut or even kill and he throws them with deadly accuracy. He is, in fact, capable of some leadership and captained the Black Cat pirates for 3 years between Kuro's reign.
Fighting Weaknesses: So. Very. Many. *cough* Jango is gullible, EASILY distracted, sometimes hypnotizes himself, and he's not that brave. He was momentarily held up by four stubborn kids when one of them was sickly. So even though with Fullbody he could take down entire pirate crews just the two of them (while dancing no less) a strong foe can quickly overpower him (Bon Clay knocked him unconscious without taking a hit) and he has NO willpower to withstand haki. (He completely passed out from Luffy's use of it in the battle of marineford.)
» Personality/Background:
History: From a very young age, all Jango wanted to do was dance. So he set off with hearts in his eyes, headed for the glamorous lifestyle of a traveling dancer. He won some competitions here and there, but slowly realized it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. The road lacked such luxuries as showers and a regular meal. And so one day when a strange red and black striped mushroom grew on his chin, the hungry man ate the cap of it. It tasted disgusting (unsurprisingly) so he left the stem there on his chin. However, from that day forward he was able to do some mysterious hypnotic powers. Instantly seeing the potential for evil piratical deeds, Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates convinced Jango to join him in piracy. This wasn't very hard to do as Jango is both gullible, easily swayed and growing weary of a life without showers and food.
As a pirate, Jango was trusted at Captain Kuro's right-hand man (which still meant he was trusted very little and only given need-to-know information on the captain's plans). The Black Cat Pirates were relatively famous (for the quietest ocean in the world) until Captain Kuro decided he was tired of being chased by the marines and wanted to settle down with lots of money and not work so hard. He killed an entire shipful of marines except one, and had Jango hypnotize a look-alike into thinking he was Captain Kuro. He then had Jango hypnotize the marine into thinking he'd captured Captain Kuro (the look-alike) and used this to create his own death. As Kuro used this for the start of his quiet retirement plan, he sent Jango to captain the Black Cat Pirates for the next three years with the orders to come back after that time. Jango willing obliged and the minute he returned, he was unnerved by how Kuro's terrifying fighting skills were still the same.
The attack he was originally going to lead on Syrup Village at Kuro's orders was thwarted by the Straw-Hat crew. Jango grew more and more panicked as the time went on, because of how much Kuro hated having his plans go awry. As he explained to the crew around him, if they didn't finish as planned Kuro would kill them all in his attack that made him invisibly fast and unable to control what he slashed. When Kuro ordered Jango off to the forest to hunt to Kaya and hypnotize her into signing over her will, he did so without hesitation, relieved to be out of the immediate line of fire. He was willing to kill the kids protecting Kaya, but agreed not to kill them when she offered to write the will. He was knocked out by Usopp's shot though and left in the forest.
Upon waking up he found that his crew was already leaving and had abandoned him there. He went into town, but was recognized by the Veggie Pirates he'd been ready to kill and chased off of the island. Falling into his old lifestyle, Jango sailed to the neighboring island; Mirrorball Island which had a dance competition taking place. He disguised himself and teamed up with the Lieutenant Fullbody (not realizing he was a marine, and Fullbody not realizing Jango was the pirate Jango) and won. Later when they were celebrating, marines came up to Fullbody with Jango's original clothes to inform him that Jango the hypnotist was on the island. Jango got ready to flee capture from Fullbody and the other pirates on the island, but as he was running away, the other pirates held a woman hostage (Fullbody's weakness) and were going to kill Fullbody.
Unable to let his friend be killed like that, Jango came back, rescued the woman and helped Fullbody defeat the enemy pirates, only to get arrested by Fullbody for revealing his disguise. However, at Jango's trial (where he was sentenced to death for being a pirate), Fullbody got up and did a moving Friendship dance. Jango was released on the condition that Fullbody had to take responsibility and take a demotion. Because they couldn't be friends as pirate and marine, Jango was going to hypnotize Fullbody into forgetting him, but Captain Hina distracted them both in the middle. Forgoing piracy altogether, Jango and Fullbody immediately enlisted in Hina's crew and did everything they could in an attempt to capture her attention.
As a marine, Jango never stopped dancing. Together with his best friend Fullbody, he helped take down pirates (somewhat amazingly given some of his bungling) and would be late getting back to their captain because they stopped to pick her flowers. Jango and Fullbody were each helping Hina led ships against the Straw-Hat and Bon Clay team as they tried to escape Alabasta. Unfortunately Jango and Fullbody knocked their ships into each other when trying to close in ranks on the Straw-Hats and they got shot by Usopp (again for Jango). This opened up a gap for the Going Merry to get by when Bon Clay sacrificed himself and his ship for his friends.
The adventures against Bon Clay didn't end there however. On vacation island, just while Jango and Fullbody were hoping to get some swimming and relaxing in, Hina spotted ex-Baroque Works agents. It seemed that Mr. 3 turned himself in, but it was actually Bon Clay in disguise. Fullbody was instantly knocked out by the okama and Jango soon followed. Typical of Bon Clay, he sacrificed himself so that the rest of the Baroque Works agents could flee, though this got him captured by Black Cage Hina.
Jango and Fullbody were with Hina at the battle of Marineford against Whitebeard and Jango noted that Luffy's crew were conspicuously absent among those with Straw-Hat. His help in the battle was rather minimal however, as he was knocked unconscious by a burst of Luffy's haki. It should be noted however, that he appears to have gained strength and loyalty because he didn't even try to run away from the battle, unlike his earlier self would have certainly done. (Even with Aikanu killing deserters.)
**********************
Personality: Jango isn't the hardiest or bravest of souls. He's scared often and easily and has no problem with running away, but if his loyalty is earned he'll do his best to repay it (even risking his life and liberty.) His number one passion is dancing and for some strange reason, he doesn't think he's weird. He likes traveling (on his own, as a pirate, or even as a marine) and has actually managed to see a great deal of the world. He is extremely gullible, and equally easy to sway to almost any side or point of view. He was convinced to be a pirate with ease, easily convinced that Usopp had hundreds of thousands of allies at his side (much to the embarrassment of the other black cat pirates), easily convinced to join dance partnership with Fullbody, and easily convinced to be a marine just because Hina was going to be their commander. (And she's hot.)
Jango's only real true friend is Fullbody, who risked his life and career to save Jango from a pirate's execution. And while they both compete for Captain Hina's attention, they stand no chance and continue their activities together, dancing and showing off and carousing and picking flowers. Despite later joining the marines, Jango can be somewhat piratical, and yet likewise, he has enough loyalty and like of Hina and Fullbody to stick by the marines and do his job (even though he's gotten hurt and knocked unconscious several times, been forced into a war with superpowers well out of his caliber and so forth).
He enjoys dancing most of all and even fighting pirates, he continues to dance. Walking around town he tends to moonwalk, and he still loves entering dance competitions. He'll drink alcohol should the opportunity present itself (Jango's Dance Carnival, and with Fullbody after the dance competition) and shows other adult tendencies like honing in on Hina's beauty and seeking to impress her. He can be somewhat loyal if he has strong enough reasons, and he doesn't want his friends killed or hurt. He cares more about his friends than strangers and in general doesn't mind a town of villagers getting hurt with death casualties involved. However, he will try to protect his friends and crewmates and this is what keeps him going (the fear they'll get hurt) and prompted him to rescue Fullbody, stick by Fullbody fighting Bon Clay and even not run away at Marineford.
Jango enjoys using the hypnotism for pacifistic effects, but is more likely to do it when asked/ordered. He makes a good marine in that he instantly obeys orders without thinking about it, which is mostly likely why Hina puts up with him. He likes bright colors and flowers and tends to get distracted very easily. He's also not particularly bright, but he gets by.
Important canon relationships
- Captain Kuro: Kuro was his first Pirate captain and found Jango when he was still just a traveling dancer who gained the ability to hypnotize people. (By eating the cap of the mushroom on his chin. The stem of which remains -- that's his goatee. Ew.) Kuro is a brilliant planner and strategist and instantly saw use for Jango as a first mate. Jango went along with it for his own gain and despite his intense fear of Kuro he had some loyalty for the man. He kept Kuro's crew and captained them for 3 years, mostly to keep up Kuro's plan, but when it was thwarted by the Straw-Hats, Kuro abandoned Jango on the island so the hypnotist lost any love for the man. And mostly just fears him.
- Fullbody: Fullbody really is Jango's best and truest friend. They share a love of the dance and met on Mirrorball Island by joining a dance competition that they won together. Fullbody was then looking for Jango the pirate (as Fullbody was a marine lieutenant at the time) not realizing it was his dance partner so Jango ran away. But when Fullbody almost got killed by other pirates, Jango came back to rescue him. True to his job however, Fullbody arrested Jango even though he didn't want to. At Jango's trial, Fullbody spoke up on Jango's behalf telling everyone how Jango risked his life to save him and then gave a rousing moving dance that made many of the people even cry. Fullbody begged them to let his friend go free and the judges said that was all very nice and moving, but completely unnecessary. As long as Fullbody vouched for Jango and paid for the bounty, Jango could go free. Fullbody actually did this for him (and was stripped of his rank back down to seaman recruit). They both fell for their gorgeous commander (Captain "Black Cage" Hina), but in spite of their "competition" (of which neither stand a chance) they remain on very good terms and do just about everything together. From defeating pirates to picking flowers to dancing around and having fun.
- Captain Hina: Jango and Fullbody's commander, they both completely fawn over her. They pick her flowers, do dances to get her attention and obey her every order. Despite Fullbody's rescue of Jango, the hypnotist was originally going to run away and not join the marines after all, but when Hina showed up, he instantly fell for her beauty and joined straight-away. She feels nothing but annoyance for him and uses them as slaves and gets impatient with their idiot antics when she can't just ignore them. This does nothing to deter them however.

- Punching this character (provided they can fight back): Be my guest. He's pretty easy to knock out.
- Easiest way to get on his good side: Dancing! And he likes showing off his hypnotism even though he claims otherwise.
- Easiest way to get on his bad side: Jango doesn't really have a bad side. He's kind of cranky-ish with most people and only hates the kinds of things everyone would (getting insulted, attacked, etc.) He does hold a grudge against the Straw-Hat crew however, and he's not a big fan of kids.
- Can I hack his journal?: Yes, he's not smart enough to make unhackable locks.
- Can he hack my journal?: Not a chance.
- Fourth Wall Breakage: Sure.
- Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/etc?: Yes. Just let me know what you have in mind/how long/etc. The crackier, the more I'll love it!
- Maim/Murder/Death: Try not to go too over the top please?
- Blood: Yeah that's fine.
- Fainting Drowzee/pokebattles: I'd like him to win sometimes, but in general I'm cool with letting him lost about 85% of the time (or more) especially to kids, because he can never win against them.
