...Actually, I thought of the possibility of us being returned at the instant we left a while back myself. Unlike you, though, I simply made a wild guess based off fairy tales. The other possibility never occurred to me, though, and...as much as I hate to admit it, I can't dismiss it.

Another interesting question comes from it: If we are, does it matter?

I'd say it does. As we all know, people disappear on occasion. If we were pulled from our worlds and then get returned to that point in time, then nothing is wrong. However, if we're copies, then what happens to the people who suddenly vanish?

Possibly the same thing that happens to people in the real world when their lives are over. We can speculate all we want, but that's treading on the toes of religion.
