"I'm flattered but I'm sorry."

The most painful and hurtful single sentence I have ever been told in my entire life. All of that hurt and pain in five little words, I'm flattered but I'm sorry.

a simple "I'm sorry" is almost kinder.

Yup. It's condescending, but in a gentle way, which is the worst type of condescending there is.
