Everything is well in Maryland. I've got a great group of people in my program, and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better through all kinds of fun events (cough: happy hours

(meaning they didn't stop coming once the time limit of office hours was reached.)
I know it's tough to do (I've always been one of those nice guy TAs), but you're going to have to be strict about when office hours are over. Otherwise you'll never have any time for your own work - believe me, I know. The nice thing is that they probably all have the same questions, so you can answer them all at the same time if you arrange things right.
BTW, did you try to call me last night? I got a call from a 301 number, and you're the only person I could think of in that part of the world who might have my number.
So, do you not let them set up an appointment to come see you if they can't make your office hours? And do you know a diplomatic, polite way to make them go away at 3:31 (my office hours end at 3:30)?
And sadly no, it was not me who called. You should come down and visit sometime. You have spare time right? :)
Well, I let them set up appointments if they CANNOT make my office hours - but you have to be wary lest they just not come to office hours because it's not convenient. Zombies can be rather inconsiderate, I find.
I usually fire a warning shot about 10 minutes before the end of office hours - "ok, guys, I can take a few more questions - I need to go in ten minutes" - and then I usually run over a few minutes. My other strategy is to schedule something right after office hours - "Oh, shit, guys, I need to get to class. Everybody out!"
I should come down to visit, and I may actually be able to find the time. It's pretty cheap to get to Washington ($20 on the Chinatown bus). It's a matter of finding the time.
I've heard wonderful things about the Chinatown bus. Ted is trying to convince me we want to do New Years at time square this year, and he's using that as our means of transportation.
I'll keep an eye on the zombies, and hopefully it won't be a problem. I've turned one person down already who wanted to meet on Friday night or over the weekend. And the office hours thing hasn't been a problem since last week. I even had a girl tell me she had one more question, but knew my hours were ending so she'd take it to another TA whose office hours are tomorrow.
So maybe this will be alright. hey - i haven't been reading like i should - are you going to the obama/mccain shindig? did you get tickets?

I'm a direct descendant of Robin Hood.
Okay, that's awesome. I'm happy to call you Countess, as long as you remember you're still my minion. *gryn*
