Sweet Valley Kids #1: Surprise! Surprise!

Wow! I wonder what the surprise is!

And I strike, yet again with a second recap for the first SVK book!

I have another edition with the same art, but flipped flopped. Ya know, Jess would be on the right and Todd would be on the left and Liz still in the middle. Todd looks pretty funny with his hair and his eyes are huge and I don't know if he's supposed to be blowing that party blower or not. Like I said, mine is an older edition so mine has a "Win The Birthday Gift Of Your Dreams Sweepstakes"

The book starts with Liz waking up because it's six days until the twins turn seven. She throws a koala bear (a stuffed one) at Jessica so she'll wake up. They decide to wear matching yellow sweatsuits that day. At school they have a spelling test and Lila has got Jess a "really good present." But it's a surprise! Jess will have to wait until the twins' party. The next day the twins are waiting at the bus stop with Steven, who is in the fifth grade. *headdesk* Liz and Jess are thinking about what food they should serve at the party. They finally agree on mini pizzas and Todd starts to pretend to punch Liz in the shoulder. Would that count as a ToddPunch?

We go to the twins' dance class and Lila has a new red leotard and red leg warmers. Didn't the twins go to ballet in Sweet Valley Twins? Jess is asking Lila what she and Ellen got for her birthday and she doesn't mention Liz at all. Then Jess remembers this blue velvet headband with a bow on it and she wants to get it for Liz but it'll be hard to buy it because she and Liz go everywhere together...

At breakfast the next morning, Liz is reading and eating toast at the same time. Jess and Alice are talking and Liz is surprised because if Jess has to say something, she has to tell Liz. Liz is going to Caroline Pearce's after school so Jess can buy the headband. During class, Todd asks Jessica if she wants robots or garbage goo for her birthday. *headdesk* She wants something pretty though. Then Ken asks if she wants any stuffed animals and she's all, "Those are for little kids so no." He asks Liz if she wants a catcher's mitt and she says sure. After school Jess gets the headband at the mall. The next day the girls get their new birthday dresses, matching too! Also, Liz is getting Jess a little race car that spins in circles. I wonder how she'll like it... They find the perfect dresses and they buy them and leave.

The next day in gym class they're having a three-legged race and Liz and Jess are being asked, put they reject and be each others' partners. They win too! When they get back to class, Mrs. Becker has brownies for the class. Back in my elementary class, we had to bring in our own treats. Also, two of the brownies have a candle and Mrs. Becker lights up a match to light the candles.

Saturday. Day of twins' birthday. The twins wake up and they get blueberry pancakes for breakfast and streamers and balloons everywhere. I wonder if Ned and Alice prep like this for Steven's birthday! Winston is the first party guest to arrive, then Lila, then everyone else. They play the first game, Sardines! Liz and Jess hide in their parents' bathroom tub. Who, in their right mind, would let thirty second graders run around their home? Someone is bound to get lost. Anyways, Todd finds them then Amy, then everyone else and Winston is last.

Then, after some games the author didn't put us through, it's time to open presents! They decide to open the presents by the order the people arrived, thus opening Winston's presents first. He gave them both two stuffed dinosaurs. Lila gives them a dollhouse, complete with furniture! Todd gives Jess a necklace and Liz a notebook with a hamster on it. Amy gives Jess an autograph album and Liz two books. Ellen gives them leg warmers for dance (oh, who all takes dance? Everyone?). And Ken gave them a poster of a rainbow, for their room. Finally, the twins open up the presents for each other... they don't like them! What should they do? Switch, of course! Then it's time for cake! They each get twin cakes that were chocolate with marshmallow icing (sounds gross to me!). They wish to get the class hamster, Tinkerbell, to take care of over winter break.

What will Jessica do if Elizabeth brings the class hamster home? Find out in Sweet Valley Kids #2, RUNAWAY HAMSTER.
