Anya's tough; she doesn't give in to the fear and horror that has filled everyone else in the Summers' household after the fight with Caleb and the First. It's only after everyone's asleep that Xander hears it.
Perhaps it was a perk of not having one sense, having the other four enhanced, like Daredevil. He can hear it clearly, as if she was next to him, how she cries inconsolably alone in the bathroom, and he wants to hold her in his arms and assure her everything would be alright.
But he can't. Because it won't be alright.
He'll never be able to see her beautiful face again.
