Henry stared at the door, lightning seeming to sizzle through his veins. The man who had held his hand after he'd fallen down the elevator shaft wasn't just a dream. He was here, in this room, in living color -- looking even better than Henry remembered him.

"Hi," the man said, moving a few steps into the room, towards the bed that Henry was lying in, and holding out his hand. "I'm Zeke Barnes. I was there when you fell down the elevator shaft -- I'm the doctor who stabilized you. Looks like you're doing better than we first thought you would."

"I'm lucky to be alive, I know," Henry managed to murmur, unsure as to whether it was his own weakness that made it hard to talk, or the fact that Zeke literally left him breathless. He had so many things to say, but he didn't know which words to say first.

It was easier to just lie here and look at Zeke, to drink him in.

He felt too weak to do much of anything else, he thought wryly. He had fallen four stories; he was lucky to be able to think, much less to talk. He probably shouldn't even be alive; he had no idea why he was, but he was grateful for whatever twist of fate had preserved his life.

"I don't work here at the hospital, but since I work at clinic nearby and I was first on the scene, the doctors here agreed to let me see you," Zeke told him, looking down at Henry with a smile. "I'm glad you're awake. I was afraid you'd be out for a long time."

"I've got a feeling that you might have saved my life by being there," Henry whispered, wishing that his throat wasn't so dry. He had never felt such weakness in his life -- and now, he was sure that it was more due to Zeke's nearness than to what he'd recently been through.

He wanted this man to stay here by his side all day. Forever, if that was possible.

"I know you're not feeling your best right now," Zeke said, squeezing Henry's hand before letting go. "But we've got to get you started on some physical therapy, so your muscles won't atrophy. And we've got to find out just how much damage was done."

Henry nodded, taking a deep breath. With any luck, Zeke would be the doctor who aided him with physical therapy. And no matter how much effort it took, he would throw off this weakness and do his best to comply with whatever Zeke told him to do, if that was what it took to keep him here.
