They’re moving through the Second District, Yuffie sticking close to Kairi’s side, when Leon holds up a hand. His eyes are narrowed as they sweep towards the hotel, and then he’s inclining his head towards the nearest building.
The Heartless have been getting too strong, too fast, ever since Sora returned from Hollow Bastion. He’s gone back there, ready to close the Keyhole, and maybe Leon and Yuffie could handle the Heartless on their own, but not when they have Kairi with them. Not when Sora’s trusted them to keep her safe.
They duck inside before anything nasty can catch sight of them, Leon closing the door firmly behind them, and Yuffie realises exactly which shop they’ve stumbled into.
She breaks out in a broad grin at the same moment Leon sighs, reaching up to rub his temples.
“Why hello there!” the Mad Hatter cries, rushing over to greet them, and Leon looks like he’s considering taking on the Heartless after all. “Are you here to try on hats?”
“Or maybe you’d care for a spot of tea?” the March Hare suggests.
“Both!” Yuffie exclaims, ignoring Leon’s frustrated groan. “My friend Kairi here, it’s her unbirthday!”
“Is that so?” the Hatter and the Hare ask in unison, grinning from ear to ear.
“Not the song,” Leon mutters through gritted teeth.
But of course it’s too late. Kairi blinks in confusion, but in no time at all she’s smiling, clapping along as the Hatter and the Hare sing a celebration of her unbirthday, the cheery and repetitive tune filling the entire shop.
Leon stands by the door, arms crossed, and glowers when Yuffie gives him a cheeky wave.
Kairi tries on hat after hat, each more ridiculous than the last, and Yuffie sings and laughs until her face hurts, until there are tears in her eyes.
It feels so good to fool around like this, to be with somebody her own age, and Kairi is so easy to get along with. She’s warm and kind and has this sneaky sense of humour, and when she smiles it makes Yuffie feel at ease, it makes her forget the Heartless and the scattered worlds and everything that’s wrong in her life.
Kairi sets a cap on Yuffie’s head, brightly coloured and with a spinning pinwheel on top, and Yuffie strikes a pose. “Do I look totally awesome?” she giggles, and Kairi doubles over laughing, hands on her knees. “I’m going to take that as a yes.”
And then Kairi’s stepping closer, pressing a kiss to Yuffie’s cheek, and Yuffie almost trips over her own feet in surprise.
“You look very dashing,” Kairi tells her, raising a playful eyebrow while Yuffie gapes and feels herself blush.
From his place by the door, Leon starts smirking. Yuffie sticks her tongue out at him, which only makes his smirk grow more pronounced, the jerk.
The Hatter and the Hare sing on.
