“Okay, that is just disturbing,” Peter announces, wrinkling his nose.
Gamora glances along his line of sight, raises an eyebrow. “They’re not causing trouble, I’d say it’s a marked improvement.”
Peter opens and closes his mouth a few times, flailing his hands in the general direction of Groot’s long and bulky body. “But look at them! I mean, look.”
Gamora sighs and does as Peter desires. Groot blinks back at her peacefully, the bark of his face shadowed in the dimmed light of the Milano’s lower deck, but his eyes looking content and happy. Rocket is curled up in Groot’s arms, sleeping quietly, paws wrapped around a branch from Groot’s torso. He snuffles a little as she watches, pressing his face closer, tail twitching.
“They’re doing nothing wrong,” she informs Peter dryly.
“That’s my point!” Peter barks, exasperated. “Look at them, look how adorable they’re being. Rocket! Rocket being adorable. Rocket, whose answer to every problem is building a bomb! How do you not find it disturbing, him being cute!?”
Drax shakes his head slowly in confusion. “You would prefer Rocket to be building a bomb?”
“Yes!” Peter snaps. “I mean no! It just blows my mind, okay? Next I’ll be finding you cute.”
Drax tilts his head, clearly considering his feelings about the idea of Peter finding him cute.
“I’m trying to sleep here,” Rocket grumbles, groggy and not opening his eyes. “Shut the hell up, Quill, or I’ll claw your face off.”
Peter blinks, then relaxes a little. “See, that’s more like it. That’s what I expect from you guys.”
Gamora rolls her eyes and watches as Groot cradles Rocket carefully, rocking him slightly from side to side. Rocket gives a huge yawn, his voice loud but cracking at the end into something smaller and, she has to admit, rather sweet.
“Oh, come on!” Peter groans as Groot smiles and strokes a handful of twigs over Rocket’s fur. Rocket lets out something surprisingly close to a purr, and Gamora has to hide her smirk as Peter throws his hands up and walks away.
To be fair, they are pretty adorable.
