When Sakura and Rei were children, the black-haired boy had taken it upon himself to teach Sakura the wonders of the world, and life itself.

Some days he'd tell her about dragonflies, and the explanations behind their vibrant array of colored skins, or the stories behind each of the constellations in the night sky. Sakura would listen with interest-not just because she enjoyed Rei's presence, or the hand woven into hers as they lay on their backs-because the lives of animals and the Earth itself in general appealed to her. And his stories and explanations weren't the elementary school-textbook explanations either. They were constituted of multiple fairy tales put into one-the dragonflies were knights with shining armor, the constellations were their heavenly guides, and the flowers their princesses trapped in towers. They held Sakura's attention, and stuffed emotions so warm and bright into her young, pliant body she thought she might burst.

But all her emotions ever do is bubble, and churn, swirl around her palm and against his fingers, never encompassing both of them, but consuming her in the need for release.

So today, when Sakura manages to climb up into the tree using the smaller, slighter branches Rei had helpfully pointed out to her the first time she'd tried-she'd fallen flat on her back and cried through fits of laughter, bringing an odd, but beaming smile to his face-she hoists herself up onto the largest branch she can reach, and waits. Birds chirp beside her head, cherry blossoms scatter at the touch of the forest floor, brushing past her face as they flow through the air.

"Oh, you're early, Sakura-chan. What is it today?"

Sakura holds onto the cherry blossom that lands in her palm as he climbs up next to her, his black hair windswept and unkempt, blue eyes tired. She wonders what he was doing prior to meeting her in their tree-yes; it's their tree-before a palm covers hers, and the cherry blossom lying at the center of her hand. She blinks, turns toward him, watches his azure irises match their fingertips together, holding them palm for palm, with the fragile, delicate little flower caught in between.

"I want to know," she starts, drawing his attention, "why cherry blossoms bloom in bunches."

His eyes close briefly: "It’s because they don’t like to be alone. Cherry blossoms aren’t strong enough to survive on their own, so, they bloom in larger numbers in order to protect each other.”

"They look like," she breathes, weaving their fingers together, "clouds."

An odd, but affectionate look crosses his face, and he opens their hands, gazing down at the flower and smiling into the wind. The breeze raises the flower into the air, carrying it off to join the flourishing flock of rose-hued birds in the sky.

"Don't ever forget," he says, blue eyes bright, face close, "that clouds are capricious things."
