It’s lying unopened on his desk, and he refuses to open it.

He knows what it says, feels the sweet, feminine scrawl reach for the tips of his fingers as he affectionately brushes the folded paper. He knows the promise and love she wove into this message, into the creases of the paper, into the lilts and falls of the font she chose. He knows, and he understands, and even though he despises objects, despises holding anything other than Sakura-her warmth, her heartbeat, the rarity of her softness-he cannot bring himself to destroy it.

“Burn me to ashes,” she whispers from the creases, her eyes shut, strawberry-hued locks billowing about her face, lying just beneath him, her heart bare and pressed against his palm. Her words are toxic: “Burn me until there’s nothing left.”

She knows him all too well-he can’t resist her now, he pulls the folded message into his hands and runs his fingertips just beneath the taped opening, breaking the seal and lifting the lid of envelope smoothly, and silently. He almost hears her sigh into his palms, against his fingers, and closes his eyes, holds his breath inside himself, steeling his pounding heart to allow him to continue.

Her voice drifts into his ears, wafting from the surface of the paper in his fingers: “You knew me in the end.”

His breath escapes in one smooth, drawn out, lengthy sigh.

“Sakura,” he murmurs to her letter, “why?”

Moments later, the letter offers a reply, a hushed, quiet, breath of a reply. It’s honey-scented and warm against his ear, wrapped around his chest from behind, pressing against his back, holding him close. He feels her body shift against his, her breath parting the raven-colored bundles against his temples, her lips close to his ear, dangerously close, and in this moment, the feel of her itself is intoxicating.

“Because, you knew where to find me,” she replies, breathing her words into his mind. He leans back against her, closing his eyes, reveling in the feel of her presence-solid and whole-her pulsating warmth unhindered, and brimming from her entire body. “It’s my loss, Rei.”

The sound of his name is enough to wash all rational thought from his mind.

“Oh really?” he asks, his lips quirking into a smile, as she wraps her arms around his own, palm touching the inside of his shoulder, where the Emperor sleeps. He flinches, but relaxes when her face drops to the curve of his neck, his smile returning. It’s a faint, ethereal thing, and his face holds it hesitantly, silently, timidly. “It isn’t like you to admit a loss so easily. Is something troubling you?”

Sakura’s lips mouth her words at the corner of his jawbone: “I miss you.”

“I suppose I miss you too,” he replies simply, sighing, “but honestly, aren’t you too old to play hide and seek?”

She smiles: “Aren’t we?”
