Rei knows she’s not the type to let things drop.
Rei knows this, and is not surprised when she sits down beside him one morning with a steaming tea cup in her hand asking him about Sakurako. At first, he’s surprised that she’d ask him about her own mother when someone like Heike or Shibuya would know much more about the swordswoman than he would, but after he turns to face her, and meets her gaze, he knows she’s asking him about something specific, something that only he would know. Something he probably shouldn’t, or something he would more than likely rather not tell.
Unfortunately, he also knows that Sakura wouldn’t give up even if it killed her.
There’s no such thing as secrets with Sakura, sadly.
So, he’s not surprised when she repeats her question, “Ogami, I was wondering.”
Okay, starts to repeat her question. “What?”
“You remember when I was split in half right?” It’s a stupid question-of course he remembers. “And when we were fighting Lunch-kun, right? When my mother came, and covered one of my halves with that piece of cloth, what happened?”
For a second, he almost tells her. He almost tells her the answer flat out, no hesitation, no laughter at all. But when he meets her expression after adjusting the battlements on the half-finished model castle just in front of him, another thought comes to him. Another, less reserved thought, but tempting all the same. He knows Sakura would give up if he answered her with the method he’s pondering, but he’s not sure how he should go about it. It’s quite daunting, to him anyway, and it would be completely out of character for him to act on the impulse threatening to take control of him.
But in this instance, he doesn’t care.
He doesn’t care, so he leans toward Sakura, and says, “Are you sure you want to know?”
The girl faces him oddly-it’s an almost pointed look she’s giving him, honestly speaking, and it almost makes him smile-and replies, “I asked you the question, didn’t I? Of course I want to know.”
She’s starting to think like he does. He’s not sure if he should be amused, or disheartened. “Well…”
“Ogami,” she presses, becoming impatient. “Just tell me. I want to know.”
Rei closes his eyes: “She did this.”
Rei raises his fingertips from his model castle, and slides them just under her chin, pulling her face closer to his and gently pressing his lips to hers, closing his eyes. Sakura doesn’t move, doesn’t respond-just like he hadn’t when Sakurako kissed him-but doesn’t push him away when he presses his mouth against hers just a touch harder before pulling away. He faces her with an honest, but vulnerable expression, waiting for her response, for her give him an answer.
It comes a second later: “Ogami!”
Figures.
He knew he should’ve kept it to himself.
