Rei knows he’s made mistakes-he’s still making mistakes, still hurting others despite his best intentions, still closing his heart off to others-and he knows that this sinking feeling in his heart is his way of repenting for all of them. Bearing the burdens soundlessly is the only way he knows how, the only way he knows how to come to grips with everything, and everyone he’s ever let down.
It’s almost instinctive to shut Sakura out when she tries to reach him.
“Ogami, please, just talk to me!” she exclaims, following him down the stairs.
She’s making no effort to keep their conversation private-he can hear Toki, Yuuki, and Rui peering out from behind the top of the staircase-he almost turns on her. He can see the shadows of her hair swaying behind her, her hands reaching for his back, her feet pitter-pattering down the wooden steps, easily catching up with him. Something snaps inside him, and he stops dead in his tracks, his eyes shadowed, his heart buried, even as her body slams into his back, her arms wrapping around him.
“Please,” she whispers into his ear, knowing he can’t feign ignorance if she does so. “I’m not going to judge you-the others aren’t going to judge you either. Please, just talk to us. We want to help you, Ogami. Can’t you see that?”
“I don’t need your help,” he replies, his tone soft, quiet. Sakura’s breath warms his temple as she shifts against his back, her lips mouthing her words against his ear, sending small, faint shivers up and down his spine. “Sakurakouji-san, let go of me.”
“I can’t,” she replies, her voice trembling, her arms shaking, her heart pounding against his through his shoulder. His eyes flash back to her in alarm. She’s crying-he can both see and feel her tears dropping to his shoulder. He bites the corner of his mouth angrily-there he goes again, hurting someone close to him without meaning to. “You’re bearing such a heavy burden on your own, and I can’t stand it.”
“Sakurakouji-san,” he says, his voice hesitant. Sakura reaches forward with her left hand, turning his face toward her, and pushing herself up onto her tip toes and reaching for his lips with her own. “What’re you-?!”
The taste of her stops him from speaking. He swears he can hear Toki and Rui sputtering at the top of the stairs, and Yuuki’s pawsteps hammering down the stairs, hackles rising. He doesn’t fight Sakura off, only closes his eyes, and lets her soothe the ache in his chest, take his heart in her hands, and blow her warmth onto the frozen piece of flesh. He trusts her to melt it, to set it ablaze once more-her lips breathe against his, before she pulls back, and opens her eyes inches from his.
He knows she can make him warm again.
