If this practically calls Kucinich a centrist, I'd love to know who would be a true left-wing candidate. Also, Mike Gravel is awesome.

most europeans i've talked to say, and i'm beginning to believe them, that there is no true left wing in america.

Ech, left-wing/right-wing is smoke and mirrors anyway. All you really have is two sides doing what it will take to sustain themselves. That's why I'm not voting unless I can vote for Obama; he's probably lying through his teeth, but at least he's new at it and not a grizzled veteran of the DC machine like Clinton.

i agree with your assessment of the two of them, but i'm still voting for clinton if she gets the democratic nomination.

better than the alternative...

could you see a clinton/obama ticket?

while i dont question the overall statement on how theres not much progressivism in politics right now (i'd chalk it up to be in the middle of a war, mainly) i dont think this chart has any value. what did they use to make these placements? the original source doesnt say.

I'm assuming these are based on the candidates' official positions on issues, which are well-documented and so can be determined to a fairly reliable level. however, you're right to question the accuracy of it, because one never knows what kind of bias whoever did this had.

The Oprah article was really interesting, what they said about her brand of non-threatening enthusiasm is a really important observation, I think. I was listening recently to an interview with the guy who made the movie Flock of Dodos, and he commented that a lot of evolutionists don’t do their argument any favors by denigrating those they’re hoping to persuade for their stupidity. I think something a lot of us in the progressive movement tend to look down on those from the other side as stupid, thus the elitist criticism that we always get from republicans. My response has always been “hell yeah, I’m an elitist! I’m smarter than you fucktards who think Darwinism is scary, and that Jesus will save you, and sex is evil, and that it would be fun to have a beer with Bush. However, that kind of thinking doesn’t really get you anywhere if you want to appeal to people who may be on the fence. Instead of elitist and exclusive, the progressive movement needs to be more non-threatening and inclusive ( ... )
