so i cut myself with a potato peeler last night, a fairly shallow cut maybe a couple millimeters in diameter, which should be no big deal, except 10 hours later it's still bleeding rather steadily, like it's soaked through about 4 paper towels and 2 bandaids and hurts like a bitch. i took one medium-sized dose of aspirin (which i almost never take ( Read more... )

aspirin's an anticoagulant (with relatively long-lasting effects), so that may well have contributed.

Do you have a styptic pencil? They work well at stopping bleeding.

i don't have one of those pens, but i might go out and get one if when i next take off the bandage it *still* hasn't stopped! for the moment it seems to be under control, at least as long as i have a couple of bandaids on there. Thanks so much for the advice!

aspirin and alcohol are both anticoagulants, that's why they're recommended for people with heart disease. I don't think Tylenol has anticoagulant properties, I think Ibuprofin does, but less than aspirin. Vitamin K deficiency also prevents coagulation, but I don't know if you can get it OTC (it's not technically a vitamin [except in certain circumstances], but that's a long story).

Ouch.

Well, I had a vicious encounter with a bread knife last night (who knew that slicing a lemon, in a dark kitchen, while holding it in your hand, using a serrated knife, could be a bad idea?) so I feel you.

I am a fan of direct pressure, elevation above the heart, a fairly tight bandage for the first few hours, and then the liquid bandage stuff which stings like a motherfucker but cleans and seals the wound.
