You know, when I was learning Spanish (a much easier to learn language, I'm sure), I never thought I learned very much. Then I actually had to hold conversations with hispanic coworkers and I knew a LOT more than I thought I did. I think when you are forced to use it, you realize you know more than you thought. They say immersion is the best way to learn a language (though, not always the most comfortable or the safest...)
