RUSH

I don't know why they even bothered naming it Rush, they should just have named it Slash.

That was my amused thought earlier, having seen the poster and read the blurb for the movie. Went to see it tonight, and within the first minute I was smirking and going 'No, really. Why bother?'
It was all very platonic of course, but with a few fine slash movements - not least one of the original photos of the real Niki Lauda and James Hunt sharing a word on the track.

All that aside, finally a really frickin' good movie! I've paddled upstream through mediocre and crappy films since spring, most recently Wolverine which I saw out of a sense of 'should'. But Rush is an excellent film, even for those who don't give a fuck about men driving round and round in circles, using up tons of rubber and fossil fuel all the while.

I was literally hanging on to the edge of my seat, probably more so since I didn't know what would happen. The final race takes place in 76 I think so I (an early 80's child) am amazed that I remember the name Niki Lauda from when I was a kid - and even more amazed that I remember a sense of excitement along with it despite my monumental disinterest in motors as a child. I guess my dad and brother must have watched some Formula 1 back then, or more likely, there was a big buzz back then. I just don't remember anything except the name Lauda.

I'm not saying the film is flawless but it has excellent music which really added to the suspense and adrenaline, excellent cinematography with some really beautiful images and for once both dignified, justified and rewarding use of slow motion vs full speed footage. A light touch to it, humour, an ever increasing tension and seriousness.

(As a side note, I did see one really good film this summer, End of Watch. But that was on dvd.)

film, slash
