Word count: 1511

#01 - Ring

He doesn’t know what’s so hard to figure out, since it’s really pretty simple: the best way to keep her was to not propose.

#02 - Hero

She doesn’t need a hero, and that’s sorta nice, because he doesn’t want to be one when he’s off-duty too.

#03 - Memory

“We don’t even have a fucking anniversary, how could I have forgotten it?”

#04 - Box

She punched a guy one time, when she was drunk, and angry, and nearly broke his nose, and he had to flash his badge to get them out of there safely.

#05 - Run

Whenever she started to run, he wouldn’t chase her, and she always came back to see why not.

#06 - Hurricane

“Have you ever cleaned this place, Cavanaugh, or do you just make a nest of dirty clothes and takeout containers in the corner each night?”

#07 - Wings

The first time he noticed her ‘like that’ was at Woody’s Halloween party, and he’s not sure if it was the white of the wings or the red of the horns, but he couldn’t get her out of his head for the rest of the night.

#08 - Cold

He gave her his scarf once, at a snowy crime scene away from civilization.

#09 - Red

It was red, the scarf, and she remembers only because she forgot to give it back, and Nigel made fun of her for clashing all day.

#10 - Drink

Drinking with Matt, she told Nigel one day, was like trying to kill yourself while only using lemons; unbeknownst to either of them, Matt had once made a similar statement about drinking with Jordan to Bug.

#11 - Midnight

It’s two hours past midnight, and it’s snowing outside, and his bed is so warm, and really, what’s the point of leaving now anyway?

#12 - Temptation

He couldn’t do it, wouldn’t do it, it was Jordan, Cavanaugh, what the Hell, Woody would never forgive him, Woody was his best friend, Woody was-wait, okay, Woody’d never done that to him...dammitfuckingdammit.

#13 - View

The first time she noticed him like that, he’d been called in on his day off, and apparently he’d been at the gym when he got the call; apparently it was the first time Lily, Emmy, Nigel, and Renee noticed him like that as well.

#14 - Music

Matt tries really hard to be annoyed by the fact that Jordan starts humming the Hawaii 5-0 theme song whenever he’s around.

#15 - Silk

“I can’t decide what’s lamer, Matt, that you actually have silk sheets or that they’re already on your bed.”

#16 - Cover

“You make one more joke about ‘under-cover’ detectives, and you can go sleep on the couch.”

#17 - Promise

She lies awake at night in his bed, thinking about the promises he never made and still never broke.

#18 - Dream

She’s pretty sure Matt’s having another dream about high school, because when she shakes him he grumbles something about another detention, and how it wasn’t his fault the moose ate the paint, and then he falls back asleep.

#19 - Candle

He only rented it because she wanted to see it, and he knew he’d score some major brownie points, and hey, there were lesbians that kinda looked like Jordan making out with other pretty girls, so it couldn’t be all bad...except he’s had the damn candle song (she said would you light my candle and she put on a pout, and wanted you to take her out tonight)stuck in his head for almost a week now, and if this keeps up, he’s gonna need to steal the CDs from her to put on his Ipod to get it out of his head.

#20 - Talent

Nigel had an absolute gift for making people trust him with their secrets, no matter how many times he’d blabbed before...which was how he found out, and consequently how Bug found out, consequently sending any and all of the semi-friendship Matt’d built up with the entomologist to that point straight out the window.

#21 - Silence

Woody didn’t say anything the first time he saw them out together, just turned around and walked back outside.

#22 - Journey

He did it so casually, she barely even realized what she had agreed to; all he’d said was that ‘Jersey is really kinda pretty in the winter,’ and ‘we still have the house out in Brick where I grew up,’ and ‘I got a week of vacation time stored up, might make a trip out there again sometime soon.’

#23 - Fire

“You are unbelievably insensitive, how can you bring JD up now, I can’t believe I ever-”

#24 - Strength

She leaves flowers on his grave whenever she feels like she can, and tries not to think about how he died saving her life.

#25 - Mask

She still smiles at Woody’s jokes, avoiding Garret’s pointed looks as she sneers at Matt when he comes in.

#26 - Ice

“Yeah, I may be ‘insensitive’, yet I’ve still never cheated on someone I loved-I-or even just someone I was seeing-”

#27 - Fall

He decides, horrible as it sounds, that Jordan on crutches is the funniest thing he’s ever seen, especially after she chases him around the morgue, hobbling faster than he thought she could and shouting threats of unnecessary surgical operations to come.

#28 - Forgotten

It’s two weeks after he left when she finds his shirt in her laundry basket; she wears it to sleep and can’t even pretend she didn’t cry the next morning.

#29 - Dance

They danced, briefly, at Lily and Jeff’s wedding, her head on his shoulder, his arms around her waist-it was the most public thing they had done together-at least, that was before Nigel, slightly drunker and still severely more coordinated than Seely, cut in.

#30 - Body

He’s watching Jordan roll over in his bed, still half asleep, her back exposed, her curves outlined under the sheets, and he almost smacks himself because all he can think about is Woody.

#31 - Sacred

The worst part of it all is that Woody won’t even look at him anymore, doesn’t glare or even look through him, and he still feels, still knows that he deserves worse for betraying a friend.

#32 - Farewells

He acts like nothing ever happened, and she acts like she always has towards him.

#33 - World

He put in for a transfer to New York about a year later; brushing her off on his last day in Boston with “Nobody here likes me, remember?”

#34 - Formal

He feels ridiculous for thinking about it, but it might be worth actually going to the Policeman’s Ball just to see her in that dress that she was talking about, even if she is on Woody’s arm.

#35 - Fever

The only time he wishes they had a normal relationship is moments like now, when he’s lying in bed, miserable and shivering, and she’s on the other end of the phone pretending to order latex gloves because someone else walked into the lab.

#36 - Laugh

She stopped laughing as soon as she realized he was serious.

#37 - Lies

Woody would kill him if he ever found out-knows he would, knows he wouldn’t kill her, she can do no wrong in his eyes no matter what she does-but it’s getting harder and harder to listen and smile as Woody schemes and speculates on how he’s eventually gonna win her heart.

#38 - Forever

Words like forever scared the shit out of him, too, which is probably why they lasted as long as they did.

#39 - Overwhelmed

She hung up on him mid-sentence, feeling horrible as the plane lurched away from the gate, taking her stomach with it.

#40 - Whisper

The coffee turned into drinks, which, as usual, turned into even more drinks, and before Matt had time to feel guilty, Jordan had him pressed up against his apartment door, whispering things in his ear that he’d never imagined women actually said.

#41 - Wait

“Wait,” he murmured into her shoulder, “Are you sure you’re not just using me for my body?”

#42 - Talk

There was a lot they didn’t know about each other, but as long as they didn’t ask, it didn’t matter.

#43 - Search

He’ll never admit it, but he sometimes runs the evidence from her mom’s case through the system...just to see if anything new turns up.

#44 - Hope

She knows eventually that he’ll find someone better, someone who deserves him in all his glory; she just hopes Woody finds her before he finds out about Matt.

#45 - Eclipse

“No Captain, you don’t need to transfer one of us, Woody and I-we’ll...we can work this out on our own-it’s just a...personal issue, we can handle it-yeah, I know it was a shitty thing to do, Sir, but it’s not like they were-I...yeah, I’ll take care of it sir.”

#46 - Gravity

The morning after, with his head pounding, his eyes dry, and drool down one side of his face, he felt like he was breaking some law of physics just lifting his head from the pillow.

#47 - Highway

It amazes him, after it’s over, when he’s driving home alone after work, the way he was completely right, the way Woody isn’t mad at Jordan at all.

#48 - Unknown

“Why does it matter what my middle name is?”

#49 - Lock

She locked his cigarettes in her locker at work, and it’s ten o’clock at night and he’s thisclose to strangling her for it.

#50 - Breathe

He forces himself to take a deep breath, slips into a seat in the back again, for yet another wedding that he was unprepared for...and catches Jordan’s eye as Woody slips the ring onto Lily’s finger.
