Perfect Together
Waltz
Rachel pushed them together at the school dance and Jake blushed every time he stepped on Cassie's toes; her feet were sore by the end of the night but she couldn't stop smiling.
Breathing
They collapsed together against a bale of hale; Jake wrapped his arms around her and breathed her in (he wanted to stay like that forever).
Birthday
He bought her chocolate for her birthday (as per Rachel's suggestion) but gave it to her a week late; Cassie kissed him just the same.
Valiant
Jake was their leader but Cassie balanced him out when he forgot about the consequences of his decisions.
Balloon
They floated up, up, up and away with wings and feathers and tails and beaks and laughed in each others heads as thermals gathered above the asphalt and everything was perfect for once.
Sarcasm
"They were probably out in the back doing the nasty," Marco said, laughing as Cassie and Jake showed up late to yet another meeting.
Separate's Better
Wonder
Jake slung his arm over his best friend's shoulders and gave him a quick hug and Cassie thought she saw something (something in his eyes - a look she thought he reserved only for her).
Quiet
When it was dark and quiet, Jake would sneak off into the woods and sit in the grass and talk with Tobias until sunrise; Cassie pretended she didn't know and told herself it was nothing.
Bias
Despite what he told Cassie, Jake secretly loved it when Ax called him Prince.
Jester
Cassie laughed and pressed her hands against Marco's chest; Jake watched them from across the room and felt the blood race to his head.
Nuance
Jake was busy planning, planning, planning and didn't notice the way she looked up into the rafters and smiled brighter than she had in a long time.
Worry
She worried about Rachel a lot and blew off Jake more times than she could count to sit with her oldest friend and eat popcorn.
You Hurt
Breaking
Jake felt himself being pulled in six different directions - everyone wanted a piece of him and there just wasn't enough to go around; if he could, Jake would have given himself completely to Cassie.
Quitting
One day, she just gave up on living like the world would end tomorrow and gave up her sight for a pair of yellow wings; Jake wondered why he wasn't enough to keep her whole.
Burning
He could feel his life slipping through his fingers and Cassie cried, desperately trying to keep him alive; she couldn't, she couldn't save him this time.
Solitary
Once Jake saw her - when she thought no one was around - pouring tears as if trying to flood the state and he couldn't do anything to stop her.
Jump
She leaped off the edge into the ocean all the while concentrating on the sleek body of a dolphin hoping she wasn't too late to find him.
Near
Cassie's body was limp in Marco's giant leather hands and Jake wished he a gorilla and able to carry her out of danger rather than a tiger who could only cry out in pain.
Jousting
He didn't feel like fighting anymore - with the Yeerks or his friends but Cassie most of all because he loved her and missed her input and smile and laugh.
I Heal
Jewel
He bought her a necklace once, once when he had money and time and a life, and she hugged him - tighter, tighter than she ever hugged anyone ever - because it was beautiful.
Just
Cassie couldn't imagine herself killing anyone until she squished a man beneath her hooves and that night - despite everything he had been through himself - Jake held her close and told her everything would be okay.
Whimsy
She grabbed his hand and pulled him through the rain and feeling it soak through his skin, Jake held her tight and kissed her hard.
Question
She wondered if Jake loved her but knew they were both too young and too worried to really be in love; she was content with liking him and kissing him and feeling his strong arms wrap themselves around her tiny body.
Sojourn
Jake could spend the rest of his life laying next to her (her body pressed against his, warm and comforting), even if forever was only until tomorrow.
Smirk
Secretly, Cassie smiled only for him during meetings, pretending to agree with his decisions to make him feel more confident in himself; she wanted him to be satisfied because then maybe they'd all be safe.
Belief
When everything had gone to hell and they were living in wooden cabins in a hidden valley, Cassie could still lean on him.
We Love
Victory
Jake considered any delay in Yeerk plans a success and after every win, he kissed Cassie on the cheek and smiled (he knew he had to save her one less time).
Share
They were hardly allowed to spend time together in public - for security reasons, of course - but at the mall during meetings they held hands under the tables in the food court and pretended that no one noticed.
Sordid
She wore jeans two inches too short with bird poop on the cuffs and Jake still kissed her (Cassie thought that was real love).
Virtuous
She was absolutely perfect - beyond perfect, really - and Jake wanted to kiss her all the time - in the rain, because she loved the rain - but still blushed anytime Marco brought up their relationship ("Stop, Marco, really, it's nothing").
Balcony
"What light through yonder window breaks," he whispered in her ear because he thought it was the only time they'd ever be on a balcony together; Cassie hated Shakespeare but blushed anyway.
Serenade
Tigers and wolves don't try to comfort each other in nature, but two teenage kids do when they escape death for the millionth time (and only a million more to go).
We Feel
Blessing
Cassie was glad Rachel let Jake (and Marco and Tobias) walk with them home (through the construction site) because she wouldn't be able to keep this from Jake and she needed him to guide her.
Whiskey and Rum
He grabbed all the alcohol he could carry and met Cassie in the woods by her house - for once he wanted to not have responsibility.
Walking
Bare feet (because sneakers aren't tight enough to be morphed) and Cassie's toes (and fingers and arms and heart) are freezing from the winter weather; Jake awkwardly rubs her shoulders to try and warm her.
Natural
She felt the pattern trace on her arm before her feathers sprouted and smiled at Jake as he looked on in disgust.
Soliloquy
"I can't always fix him, put him back together when he finally breaks down (and he's always breaking down these days) - I have my own problems, too, you know; I break down, sometimes, too - I need someone to put me back together."
Horizon
There was something about the way the night sky was suddenly teeming with life and possibilities and hope and the way the wet grass bled through his jeans that made Jake grab her hand.
Life Numbs
Waste/Wasteland
The future was barren, destroyed by an alien invasion; Cassie grabbed his hand and squeezed it tight (she hoped he could save them and their future).
Quirks
He pulled on his earlobe when he was trying to plan a mission, Cassie told him once and he abruptly stopped - Jake really only did it when he thought his plan would kill someone.
Neutral
Cassie couldn't feel like she used to anymore - she had killed too many innocents and not-so-innocents - but lied to Jake, saying they hadn't crossed her moral boundary yet (when really, it was a speck in the distance).
Quarrel
"Not everything is about winning, Jake - you know, sometimes the people are more important, sometimes, just sometimes, the ends don't justify the means."
Stupidity
"I don't have the luxury of waiting and planning everything out Cassie; sometimes it isn't about the people, sometimes the means don't matter as long as you get to the end - that's what this war is about - the end, not how we get there."
Bane
She just wouldn't shut up about the moral implications of everything he was doing - Jake didn't care any more about an moral issues, he just wanted it to be over.
Life Kills
Weddings
He promised her a life after the war, but only if they made it to after the war and only if there was an "after the war."
War
Regardless of how Cassie tried to remind him that life was more than a battle, war was all Jake was.
Sorrow
She felt like everyone around her was dying and wondered how long it would be until Jake lost too much of himself in the war (it was coming, she could see it).
Defeat
The only difference between success and defeat was life and death and Jake knew one day he'd have to choose death for one of them - he promised himself it wouldn't be Cassie.
Nowhere
Rachel was dead, Ax was a thousand light years away, Tobias might as well have been and Cassie was nowhere and without the only person she could have loved.
Wishes
She wanted to go with him because it was the right thing to do (and because Ax was her friend, too) but knew he didn't want her there (or at all, anymore) so stayed on the ground and looked up the sky every day hoping for his return.
