===========================================================

#01 - Air
Being held in Methos' arms in the dark, struggling to breathe, and knowing time was running out after a simple pot-holing expedition went wrong, Sam asked him if he was scared they wouldn't be rescued in time, and then realised how silly the question was because for him death was not permanent, but he replied that he was because that she was his air and the thought of losing her like he had lost so many others was scary as hell and that he'd been there and didn't want to ever go back.

#02 - Apples
One day after Methos' habit of name-dropping was even beginning to annoy Sam, Jack turned around and sniped that Methos had probably known the snake in the Garden of Eden, and even gone as far as supplying the apples; Methos had gone quiet, looked at Jack and told him that he was a child with no idea of how soul destroying evil really was.

#03 - Beginning
Once beginning a project, Sam preferred to see it through to the end, feeling a sense of accomplishment in a job well done while Methos would congratulate her, and then shrug and comment that while her discovery was great at the moment it was only a matter of time before something bigger and brighter came along to play with.

#04 - Bugs
Methos had met people with the Hunters' fear of Immortals before; bigotry wasn't new under the sun, but, he told Sam, although he didn't view Mortals as inferior bugs to be stamped out, they did share a common trait of a too short lifespan.

#05 - Coffee
Good coffee was something both Sam and Methos appreciated, and agreed on; that and the importance of a decent beer, although Sam had told Methos that he was on his own when it came to settling his bar tab.

#06 - Dark
Before they had decided to become a couple, Methos had told Sam about his past, and the dark times when he and the other Horsemen had been feared across Europe, but instead of being repulsed by it, she had said that if he could change, so could others and that fact gave her the hope she needed to believe for their future.

#07 - Despair
Methos still remembers the despair he felt when he tried to save Alexa and failed, and he had vowed to himself that he would not fall in love again only to watch that person die, but when he found himself at her graveside telling her about Sam, he knew that it was a vow he couldn't keep.

#08 - Doors
The doors in life that matter aren't always the conventional ones that you open and close at will; but over the past few years Methos has begun to loosen the locks and lower the walls he constructed around himself and a select few have been allowed to see glimpses of what lies beneath the mask that is Adam Pierson.

#09 - Drink
Methos' bar tab is legendary; Joe alludes to it being the size of the national debt, but Sam knows that although Methos doesn't admit to it, that sometimes a stiff drink is the difference between keeping a mask intact or giving into the darkness.

#10 - Duty
Duty is overrated, a pain in the ass and designed by some clever bastard to guilt people into following another's agenda, Methos figures, but when Sam receives a medal in the line of duty, he supports and feels proud of her.

#11 - Earth
Since discovering the existence of the Stargate, Methos has journeyed through it several times, but although he had always claimed that there is nothing new under the sun, he has since rephrased that to nothing new under Earth's sun.

#12 - End
Sometimes the end result justifies the route taken to get there, but even Methos refuses to trade the life of one friend for another, which shows that he has come further over last few thousand years than he would like to admit.

#13 - Fall
Time is not the great healer it is believed to be, Methos whispered to Sam, and each loss just builds one on top of the other until you fall from the height of accumulated pain that hurts far more than hell ever could.

#14 - Fire
Through the ages fire was supposed to have the power to cleanse and rid the world of evil but Methos had thought he left that mindset behind by at least a century until he was sent to the land of Nod by the Asguard to rescue Sam, Kevin and Alex from being burned alive as witches.

#15 - Flexible
While ideals are a wonderful thing, Methos has always believed that survival is even more so, and so he can be somewhat flexible in his ideals when he needs to be in order to go with the winner, but Sam disagrees and claims that in some situations compromising is not an option and morals should not change like the tide but be something you can rely on.

#16 - Flying
Sam loves flying and has clocked up many hours in the air but when she asked Methos if he had ever piloted, he shrugged and muttered something about the Wright Brothers.

#17 - Food
One evening Sam decided to surprise Methos with a nice meal and wine; cooking wasn't something she found time for often with the demands of her job but instead of the reaction she expected he stopped, and looked at her, quiet for a moment before telling her that he had tried to tempt Alexa to eat with the exact same meal already knowing how close he was to losing her.

#18 - Foot
Stretching out and letting Methos rub first one foot and then the other after tramping through the rough terrain of an alien planet, Sam remarked that he must have had a lot of practice because he was so good at it; he smirked, told her that it was one of the things he had learnt wandering the desert for forty years and then ducked before she threw a cushion at him.

#19 - Grave
The first time Methos really talked to Sam and told her about Alexa had been after he had visited her grave; on the following anniversary they knelt at her resting place together and Sam placed flowers in memory of someone she had heard so much about but to her regret would never have the privilege of meeting.

#20 - Green
Sam was very surprised when Methos wore green on St. Patrick's Day, and told him that he might be a lot of things but she doubted he was Irish; he replied that he had been in several lifetimes and besides, wearing this at Murphy's Bar on this particular day meant free beer.

#21 - Head
Methos is very attached to his head; five thousand years of life is not something he wants to give up, but there are days when he feels every one of those years and wonders if he is in fact not living as such but the namesake of what he had once been - Death.

#22 - Hollow
Sam got home early, surprised to see Methos curled up on the sofa, a beer in one hand and a copy of Irving's 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' in the other, but when she commented he merely said that he was catching up with an old friend, and that the best stories had an element of truth to them.

#23 - Honour
Methos struggled to keep a straight face, in the end allowing himself a smirk, when Amanda came to visit and Sam asked her if there was any truth in the saying which said there was honour amongst thieves.

#24 - Hope
While Sam enjoys her trips through the Stargate, sometimes what she sees erodes her hope for the future; on those days she focuses on Methos for if he can change, so can humanity as a whole, but a little voice reminds her that individuals do not have the privilege of his lifespan, and it is individuals that make up that whole.

#25 - Light
Light is often thought of as the opposite of darkness, of death, but while Sam sees Light as knowledge, Methos views it as a never ending lonely horizon stretching out to a forever he clings onto because he's grown attached to life, but deep down isn't so sure he really wants.

#26 - Lost
Although Methos has loved and lost many times, there are very few to which he has exposed his true self to and in doing so buried a piece of himself with them.

#27 - Metal
Methos knows the importance of taking care of metal; the condition of his sword could make the difference between keeping or losing his head, but he also is aware that one day that will not be enough; he just prays that will not be within Sam's lifetime.

#28 - New
Even though being in love is not a new experience, being with Sam reminds Methos that what they have together is unique, and something he will never find again, no matter how long he lives because it will not be with her.

#29 - Old
Although Methos seems by appearance to the same age as Sam, looking into his eyes she can see just how very old he is, but lying in her arms after making love, those years fall away to reveal the echo of a young man clinging onto dreams he knows one day will be ripped away.

#30 - Peace
Peace is often fragile at best and after centuries of watching civilizations rise and fall, Methos knows that often the moment that defines it is not a decision made by those in power, but a sacrifice that is personal and often almost too high.

#31 - Poison
Humans and Immortals alike have, over the centuries, explored the potential of poison as an efficient means to an end and while Sam views the Stargate as a vehicle through which to widen the horizons of human experience and knowledge, Methos is relieved that Kronos never learnt of its existence.

#32 - Pretty
Pretty has been used as a word to define many things over time, a sunset, a child, or even a painting but the first time Methos saw Sam he knew that for her, it did not even scratch the surface of the complex, intelligent, beautiful woman he tried to convince himself he would not fall for.

#33 - Rain
Finding Methos staring out the window one day, Sam asked him what he was thinking about; he turned, smiled sadly, and told her about the first time he and Alexa had shared an umbrella in the rain.

#34 - Regret
Lying in bed one night, Methos asked Sam if there was anything in her life she would change, given the opportunity; she smiled, stroked his cheek and said that experiencing life to the full meant it was impossible not to feel regret about at least something but that their relationship was not one of them.

#35 - Roses
Sam wasn't sure when exactly their relationship grew from friendship to romance, but although that night they talked over beer when Methos broke into her house to drink her coffee was the first time he lowered his masks for her, she smiles as she remembers the roses left on her desk at work the Valentine's Day before and wonders if he realises she always knew they were from him.

#36 - Secret
Lies are more convincing if constructed around a truth, but some truths are too dangerous to risk in this manner, and it is a heavy burden when you cannot trust someone fully for fear of discovery but Sam and Methos are both thankful that with each other they do not have to hide either their own secrets, or those of the friends they now think of as family.

#37 - Snakes
Methos has never been fond of snakes; he remembers all too well a particularly nasty death while trapped in a pit full of them, and he wonders if the physical form of the Goa'uld on some level, because of this, is fate having a joke at his expense.

#38 - Snow
Even five thousand year old Immortals can behave like children, Sam decided, as Methos shoved a pile of wet snow down her back, but then after getting her revenge, when he smirked and suggested a hot shower to warm up, she realised that his invitation to play was for another game entirely.

#39 - Solid
A difference of opinion can be just as solid as a brick wall when it comes between friends, but it often builds piece by piece, making its presence known too late; looking back on his days as a horseman, Methos wonders if that was one he constructed consciously or whether it just crept up on him as he changed and could no longer stomach what he had become, but one thing he does know is that the first brick had a name - Cassandra.

#40 - Spring
Watching Sam showing Jade and Megabyte's daughter Emmy the new life of Spring for the first time, Methos is reminded that a child is one thing he will never be able to give her.

#41 - Stable
Thirty eight minutes is supposedly the maximum amount of time a stable wormhole can remain open once dialled out by a Stargate, but experience has shown Sam that such things often ignore rules and in doing so defy explanation and when she struggles to apply scientific reasoning at these times, Methos reminds her with a smirk not to discount magic as, after all, it is often merely science far in advance of our own knowledge base.

#42 - Strange
After five thousand years Methos tends to react to what others might deem strange with a shrug and says that from the perspective of an Immortal, and after traveling through a Stargate and interacting with the Tomorrow People, he finds the accepted definition of the word amusing.

#43 - Summer
Methos has lost track of the number of seasons he has seen come and go; after several thousand years the years run into each other to become a blurred canvas of time, but each Summer with the sun rising earlier and the days growing longer, he is reminded life is a circle, much like the Stargate, stretching out towards an eternity of both light and darkness.

#44 - Taboo
What is acceptable in a society depends on its cultural ideologies, but Methos has noticed that often a taboo is something which is feared because it is different, and his beliefs that this will not change over time were confirmed when Sam told him that even amongst the human colonies she has visited through the Stargate, despite differences in levels in technology, it is a constant that remains.

#45 - Ugly
As with beauty, definitions of what defines ugly is very much a matter of perspective, but Sam was not impressed when she brought home a very expensive antique vase only to be told by Methos that it was ugly as sin the same as the artist who had made it, before he preceded to turn it over and show her just why the man had been so very successful as a con artist for the past two hundred years.

#46 - War
Of the Four Horsemen, Methos had been Death, and Silas, War; and while Methos knew, even as he took Silas' head, that it was the only option left, a part of him will always weep for the loss of a man he once called brother and friend.

#47 - Water
The first time Methos saw the Stargate open, the wormhole reminded him of a stream of water leading to the beginning of journey to either life, death or both; watching Sam and knowing how what little time they have together, a mere moment compared to the length of his own lifetime, he realises that analogy hits maybe just a little too close to home.

#48 - Welcome
After several lifetimes of experience, Methos has honed suspicion and cynicism to an artform, so when a stranger makes him feel welcome he immediately questions their ulterior motives, while Sam, although not of the same mindset, has seen enough to be wary, so thanks them graciously but stays alert just in case.

#49 - Winter
Winter is always a good excuse to curl up in front of a fire with a good book, good music and beer, but one night, curled up together watching the flames die down to embers, it wasn't the cold that made Sam shiver as Methos told her about his past, and the thousand years he, Kronos, Silas and Caspian had spent making many peoples' nightmares a reality.

#50 - Wood
'Touch Wood' is a saying born of a time long ago, but Methos knows, gripping his sword and standing over the unconscious body of the woman he loves, that it will take more than luck to win a battle he cannot dare lose.
