MAJOR SPOILERS for Serenity
So non-chronological it's not funny.
#01 - Motion
It's the twirling of her umbrella that catches his eye, the flash of color in a crowd of dull browns; he scurries toward it with hope and a frozen sister.
#02 - Cool
He falls asleep in the laboratory sometimes, his forehead on the instrument table, feeling his mind disentigrate under the pressure of what next, what next; he awakens to a somewhat oil-stained blanket over his shoulders and light footsteps fading.
#03 - Young
She tries to explain to him that he's not too old for three times in one night, listens to his medical blathering and laughs; when he won't believe her, she shows him with that quirky smile fixated all the while - and at least one part of him is thoroughly convinced.
#04 - Last
He tells himself this is the absolute last drink, absolutely, absolutely; he wakes up four hours later tangled in her arms with her head on his shoulder, and she's an angel, he knows it.
#05 - Wrong
She tries to teach him the right words to say so he's not constantly in danger of getting Jayne's foot up his ass and fails miserably, but she still rewards him quite generously for his attempts.
#06 - Gentle
Kaylee's amazed that those hands of his can pop a bone back in socket against the strain of the body, but can also absent-mindedly brush the underside of her forearm until she goes a little mad from the feather-light caresses.
#07 - One
She keeps thinking this one will be the last breath, this one will be the last breath, this one will be the last breath; it never is, and she's never been more ferociously hopeful than she is crouched in hiding.
#08 - Thousand
A thousand minutes...that's what the life support system says they have left to live; Kaylee pounds the engine into submission with the knowledge that Simon's beautiful body will freeze unless she does.
#09 - King
"King me!" she exults as she hops his red checkers with the ease of a professional; he admits defeat and later comes to bed to properly concede.
#10 - Learn
She's playing tag with River, he catches her up in his arms and kisses her right there in front of everyone, and that's the most important thing he could have ever done.
#11 - Blur
Her eyes fill with tears as she feels the bed beside her and knows that he's gone to his sister; only in the black of night [never the black of day] she lets her unfair jealousy run free for a minute and then turns over to hug the pillow.
#12 - Wait
She tells him idignantly that she can hold her own, but he just says wait, wait, (because if he lost her he couldn't carry on for River - so, you see, it's all on you, Kaylee).
#13 - Change
He's so sick of the black, as Kaylee calls it, the black, the dark, the black the black the black the...and he's so suprised when he can see the universe in her eyes.
#14 - Command
"Stop thinkin'." she says firmly, hands on either side of his head, and she leans in for a kiss that makes time halt.
#15 - Hold
He feels her shoulders shaking, shaking, and he is helpless; his grief is held in test tubes and never let to light.
#16 - Need
She asks for him to pass the wrench, unknowing that he's had quite enough of this stupid mechanic lesson, and she gets something entirely unexpected but not unpleasant in return.
#17 - Vision
He quietly mentions the fact that she needn't stay so long in the cleaning facilities because he's going to explode if he doesn't see her soon.
#18 - Attention
They're too busy exploring how many ways they can make the bunk creak to listen to Mal's voice on the intercom; they are shocked but not deterred when the grav goes out.
#19 - Soul
They have to bury Book in a box, like a package of wisdom, and they hold to each other and both secretly examine theirselves, finding what is right and what is wrong.
#20 - Picture
River solemnly hands her a drawing of two stick figures with their arms (and heads) tangled on a napkin; one has grease on her face and the other has a bewildered expression.
#21 - Fool
And he realizes what an idiot he's been as Zoe almost slams him against the wall, her teeth gritted as she vanishes past him towards the sound of Kaylee's crying fading down the corridor.
#22 - Mad
"She'll tear you apart, gorramit!" she cries but he goes after his sister anyways, and for three panicked minutes Kaylee holds in the shakes.
#23 - Child
They're in town, and they watch the children throwing rocks at dogs and peeing in inappropriate places and they rethink everything.
#24 - Now
He spends the day moving things around and rearranging, rearranging, but it's all worth it when she clasps him around the waist and says how beautiful it is; the room isn't much...but it's theirs.
#25 - Shadow
They're riding in the heat and light of some world, and she looks down, and in the sun's perfect sillouette it looks like they're touching, but it isn't really so.
#26 - Goodbye
Oh fuck, he's leaving, he's leaving, he's never coming back, and he'll never say goodbye at this rate - so she flees.
#27 - Hide
Sometimes she knows he's only got his head in a medical textbook because he doesn't know what to do, and she doesn't know what to do about him not knowing what to do, so they just sit that way for ages, a contrast in confusion.
#28 - Fortune
She dreams they're rich and he buys a house and they have children and maybe a horse and she can do whatever she wants whenever she wants and nothing's ever on fire in the engine and oh, it's just a dream.
#29 - Safe
And, strangely enough, drunk in a tavern full of people who practically worship Jayne is where she feels the most secure, because her drunk little head is on his drunk little chest and this is the best gorram drunken moment in the world.
#30 - Ghost
He looks ridiculously pale the first few months on board, his skin shining next to Zoe or even Wash, she doesn't mind so much, she thinks it's actually sort of kind of shiny.
#31 - Book
The Sheperd calmly approaches Simon and lets him know that he is qualified to do marriages and baby dedications; he then watches with amusement as Simon stutters his way through five minutes of telling him it isn't like that, except it is.
#32 - Eye
It's like fingers lacing and ships docking when they finally catch each other's eyes in the calm.
#33 - Never
And now it's her on the operating table, and he's not there anymore, but his hands keep moving, removing and moving, things that should never be in her beautiful skin, and the pigheaded chauvinistic side of him solemnly vows that he won't ever let her enter a firefight again, but she's out in a week anyways; he's finally learning.
#34 - Sing
When he shoots the man that was aiming at Kaylee he faintly thinks that maybe Jayne's right and bullets do sing.
#35 - Sudden
Injury is added to insult when she whips around and her hair does a bit of whipping of its own, smack dab in the face; he rubs his chin and tries to figure out where he went wrong.
#36 - Stop
He loses all control he can afford to lose when he's drunk, and she absolutely loves his abrupt plummet in self-control.
#37 - Time
The hours melt too fast when they're in bed, and Simon privately despairs; everyone's so...driven, and he's used to it just being him.
#38 - Wash
He finds her in the cockpit staring at River, whose arms are full of plastic dinosaurs; "They need a new home." River informs them firmly, "Here. Start a family."
#39 - Torn
Her shirt is ripped by some outcropping of metal on the bulky thing that runs this ship, and all he can do is stare at the sideswell of her breast with a semi-open mouth in the midst of the ship's engine falling apart.
#40 - History
He's got far too many books, she thinks, and she flips through them while he talks on and on about some Hip-pot-cra-cees fellow until she leaves, unnoticed.
#41 - Power
He drops the gun and then kicks it, watching it skitter across the blood-stained tiles, feeling relieved that he doesn't hold life and death in his hands anymore; Kaylee understands, but reloads her gun anyway.
#42 - Bother
Sometimes Jayne pantomines retching into his soup when their eyes meet like that, but, hell, they don't notice.
#43 - God
He forms one single word the moment they finally collide, the seamless melding of their bodies, she echoes it after a moment.
#44 - Wall
He shoves her away from River at one point and she hits the hull and bruises her arm, but he almost gets a knife in the chest, so they're even.
#45 - Naked
She wakes crying in the darkness from a dream of the ship stripped naked of its metals for scrap by reavers, barren and skeletal in the expanse of space, and he rubs her shoulders until she can breathe again.
#46 - Drive
She can't stop moving sometimes, and she's running from everything that's happened, but he never holds her still; she wishes he would.
#47 - Harm
"No one'll be any the wiser, Simon." she says, lips half-parted, and he can't help himself, because it's no harm done.
#48 - Precious
"Everythin's shiny, cap'n." she says with a brilliant smile, and his heart melts for her; she's...well, shiny.
#49 - Hunger
They share a peach, and really, that's it, because the flesh gives way to flesh in all forms.
#50 - Believe
"I do." they both say, and it's the truth.
