Black Jewels Trilogy, Karla/Sabrina

Title: Hesitance; Fire and Ice
Fandom: Black Jewels Trilogy
Pairing: Karla & Sabrina
Theme set: gamma
Rating: PG-13, or mild R
Summary/Comments: All hail Witch herself, Anne Bishop. (No sue, pulease.) This is based on my observation that Karla is a lesbian (see "The Warlord Prince of Ebon Rih", and that Sabrina never (to my memory) found a man. In fact, Sabrina is kind of forgotten after her first introduction. Sad, because I love Aaron (and by extension Dharo) and would like to know more about the Queen of Dharo. This piece has homosexual content, if you haven't picked up on that. It contains what I assume to be mild spoilers, but nothing major. If you do not approve of the pairing, please do not read it. Thanks!

#01 - Ring

They didn’t want to exchange rings; somehow they found they’d rather celebrate how different their relationship was to others on even that basic level.

#02 - Hero

“Don’t be a hero, Bri,” Karla snapped, “if you get yourself killed I don’t know what I’d do!”

#03 - Memory

“Blood is the memory’s river,” Sabrina whispered as she slowly pricked her finger, watching the blood seep to the surface.

#04 - Box

Curiosity was her besetting sin; when Karla tucked the box into their closet, Sabrina simply had to see what was inside.

#05 - Run

Sabrina choked back sobs until she was sure that no one would hear her; seeing Karla's body wracked with the poison meant to kill her had almost broken her.

#06 - Hurricane

The witchstorm Karla called up spun around the two Queens, her hands possessively clasped around Sabrina's waist to reassure her that her Green Jeweled lover was safe in the eye of the storm.

#07 - Wings

Sabrina loved the look on Lucivar’s face every time Karla made that smart ass remark about wingspan.

#08 - Cold

Cold didn’t quite describe it when Karla walked the edge of Queen’s rage, but there was always enough warmth in Sabrina to help her step back from that line.

#09 - Red

Karla never wore red; the color just didn’t suit her pale features Sabrina had long ago decided.

#10 - Drink

Jaenelle giggled madly at her two friends, both deep into their fifth gravedigger; “You guys are going to need a hangover brew in the morning.”

#11 - Midnight

The midnight voice rolled over both Queens, Sabrina’s hand tightening around Karla’s as judgment was passed for the death of a Brother of the Court.

#12 - Temptation

The cut of that dress was a blatant temptation, Karla decided as she shifted icy blue eyes over Sabrina’s deep violet gown.

#13 - View

The two women were entwined in a compromising situation when Jaenelle popped her head into the room, sky blue eyes twinkling; they jumped up, afraid that their Queen would disapprove of them but they should have known better long before she clipped out “Oops, didn’t mean to interrupt, but do you guys wanna go riding with us?”

#14 - Music

Karla was basically useless when it came to playing music, but it was beautiful how Sabrina could blend her voice with Aaron’s pipe music in such a way that left everyone in the room speechless.

#15 - Silk

Silk sheets were entirely unreasonable in Glacia where the temperature was usually frigid, so they had silk sheets on Sabrina’s bed instead.

#16 - Cover

Sabrina loved nothing more than the few lazy mornings the Queens were allowed, spooned together against the cold morning air underneath a goosedown blanket.

#17 - Promise

They were devastated when no Priestess they found would marry them, but Jaenelle promised them in her midnight voice that she would find someone who would.

#18 - Dream

Sabrina cried for almost three hours after her Virgin Night; Karla held her even if it all felt like a dream.

#19 - Candle

She lit a white candle every night that winter, in remembrance of Glacia’s late Queen.

#20 - Talent

“Surely you’re kidding, Bri!” Karla burst out, “you’re the only one who didn’t break poor Kaedon’s toes all day.”

#21 - Silence

Sometimes the silence was all they had; those quiet hours apart when they could only hold on the ghost of promises and memories in the cold, dark night.

#22 - Journey

Karla was in no condition to travel to Dharo for the harvest festivals that autumn, so Sabrina brought a little of the festival to her.

#23 - Fire

Sabrina was not a raging wildfire, but a quiet hearth flame; never dangerous until it was pushed beyond its limits.

#24 - Strength

The strength of the Gray was so much more than that of the Green, but Karla knew that Sabrina’s strength did not rely on her Jeweled power alone but instead on her immense love and the loyalty she inspired in the people of Dharo as none of the other Queens had quite done in their own Territories.

#25 - Mask

Karla hated Sabrina’s Queen face; to see hate or condemnation in those warm hazel eyes was painful even when they were never directed at her.

#26 - Ice

Every inch of Karla screamed ice, from her white-blonde spikes of hair to the glittering cold blue of her eyes.

#27 - Fall

Sabrina yelped as she fell backwards, the swing from Lucivar’s stick taking her by surprise; the Warlord Prince was not oblivious to the cold anger pouring off of Karla from the sidelines.

#28 - Forgotten

“I’d forgotten until just now,” Sabrina began slowly “it’s the anniversary of Morton’s death, isn’t it?”

#29 - Dance

It was something that had not escaped any of them; Karla was the best in their art classes, Morghann in riding, Jaenelle in song, Gabrielle in weapons, Kalush in Courtly graces… but Sabrina far outshined the other Queens in dance.

#30 - Body

Karla’s pale skin laid against the rich rosy complexion of Sabrina’s was reassuring to her for some reason, as they lay with bodies entwined.

#31 - Sacred

Though she was not a natural Priestess, it didn’t surprise Karla that Sabrina had sought out the training anyway; she had always held a certain fascination for the Dark Altars and the rites performed there.

#32 - Farewells

It was the hardest thing she’d ever done to kiss Sabrina goodbye and walk down to the Coach that would take her back to Glacia; she had no idea when they would see each other again.

#33 - World

In Kaeleer, Dharo and Glacia were not bordering Territories, but somehow one Queen or the other would come up with some half-logical reason that’s she must visit the other.

#34 - Formal

“Lady Sabrina,” Karla began, the hint of formality in her voice barely overriding containing the amusement, “I would like you to meet Prince Huron.”

#35 - Fever

Karla was naturally fussy (a natural Healer), so when she determined that Sabrina wasn't feeling well, she herded the shorter Queen to her bed and plied her with medicinal brews and apple juice.

#36 - Laugh

Karla loved her laugh the best she decided, as she took in every inch of Sabrina’s face lit up with smile.

#37 - Lies

Karla hated lying to Sabrina, but the webs had shown her what would happen if Sabrina was caught in the revolution in Glacia and it was something she was unwilling to risk.

#38 - Forever

“What is forever?” Sabrina countered, “We’re both mortal, we’re human… is forever really measured in minutes?”

#39 - Overwhelmed

Two Queens, let alone two Territory Queens, that chose to become lovers would choose a daunting path; even among the Blood homosexuality was a topic that no one wanted to discuss.

#40 - Whisper

It was so easy to whisper about love in the dark, but Sabrina had a hard time facing herself in the light of day; was what she was doing wrong?

#41 - Wait

“Wait for me?” Karla asked in the heat of the moment, “Wait until I have Glacia stable and then I’ll be with you forever.”

#42 - Talk

“We could find a Priestess tonight,” Karla began, tracing the lines of Sabrina's hand, then touching her face, “someone willing to marry us quietly.”

#43 - Search

“High Lord?” Sabrina breathed, stepping into his study that cool summer afternoon, “I think I’ve found something… that I don’t know I wanted to.”

#44 - Hope

Sabrina felt her chest swell with hope when Karla gently cupped her hand, fingertips playing with the sensitive palm.

#45 - Eclipse

The Gray eclipsed the Green in power, but that never stopped Sabrina from throwing up Green shields to protect her lover.

#46 - Gravity

Karla, who had long been accustomed to the idea that she would stand alone while the rest of the Coven found love, finally discovered that the same gravitational force that had brought the Coven together would not leave her alone; Sabrina stood waiting for her.

#47 - Highway

“That's highway robbery!” Sabrina exclaimed at the price, but she paid it anyway; those earrings would look lovely with Karla's favorite deep blue gown.

#48 - Unknown

Sabrina had Aaron to lean on, and Karla (should she ever decide she needed to lean on any male) had Morton that first time, stepping into the unknown that was SaDiablo Hall.

#49 - Lock

Somehow it went right past Morton that Karla and Sabrina were involved, even when he realized that all off the Gray locks on his cousin’s study were keyed to allow Sabrina entrance.

#50 - Breathe

It was there, laying on a throne of soft grass with the full summer bloom around them that Karla realized that she didn’t need to breathe when she was with Sabrina.
