Pairing: Link and Marin
Theme set: Beta
Rating: PG
Notes: spoilers for Link's Awakening
01 - Walking
Marin loves to walk along the beach; never has she been more thankful for that habit than she is the day she finds the half-drowned man washed up on the sand.
02 - Waltz
She moves like she's dancing, Link thinks as he watches her move through the house; it doesn't seem natural for a person to be able to move like that, and he has to ask himself if she's really some kind of spirit instead of a woman.
03 - Wishes
He wishes sometimes that he’d never drawn the Master Sword from its pedestal; yet, even after what he’s been through, he knows he'd do it all over again just to meet her.
04 - Wonder
She wonders what lies beyond the island, even more so now that she has met Link; his very presence is all the proof she’ll ever need that there’s more out there.
05 - Worry
Marin doesn't know why Link seems so driven to defeat the monsters roaming the island; she knows he must be a warrior of some kind, but the island is still dangerous, and she doesn't want him to leave the village to never return.
06 - Whimsy
In certain ways, Link and Marin are too much alike; nothing shows this better than their shared habit of disappearing from Mabe Village for hours or even days at a time, wandering the beach or traveling to the Animal Village.
07 - Waste/Wasteland
He needs more rest than he gets, but he can’t sleep, not while his dreams are filled with the image of Marin wandering the burnt-out shell of Mabe Village, so he forces himself ever forward, ever onward.
08 - Whiskey and rum
He dares to drink alcohol that one night when Tarin pulls a bottle out of some hiding place; he never can remember that night, but Marin's embarrassed look whenever he asks is enough to make that one night the only night.
09 - War
Link knows what war was like, thanks to the long weeks he’d spent fighting Ganon; Marin knows nothing of it, and he’s determined that she never will.
10 - Weddings
One night, when Link is out exploring another dungeon, Tarin asks her when the wedding is; all Marin can do is blush and stammer.
11 - Birthday
The people of Koholint put more value on birthdays than Link ever has, although it embarrasses him to have so much attention aimed at him.
12 - Blessing
What neither Link nor Marin ever realize is that Tarin hopes the two of them have a long and loving life together.
13 - Bias
Link loves Marin, and she loves him, but the thought still occasionally nags at them: Does he love her simply because she looks so much like Princess Zelda and she him because everything about him is so mysterious to her?
14 - Burning
One day she grabs his hand and leads him through the village, and he wishes there was a fire or something he could blame the heat in his cheeks on.
15 - Breathing
Link doesn’t really understand what it is about her breath tickling his ear that he likes so much, but every time it happens, he feels like the weight has been lifted from his shoulders.
16 - Breaking
On one lazy day, when Marin finally manages to convince Link he needs to rest, the two go down to the beach to wander the sands and watch the waves break upon the shore; as they watch the sun set over the crystal clear ocean, he wishes he could do this more often.
17 - Belief
He's going to take her to his world, Marin thinks while going about her chores; he's going to show her everything that exists beyond the island, everything that she's been dreaming about all her life, everything he's ever known, and she can't wait to see it all.
18 - Balloon
"A dream on the lid of a sleeper's eye..." rings in his mind, repeating itself over and over like some kind of mantra -- Koholint is nothing more than a dream, a bubble floating above a bed of needles -- burning themselves into his soul; Marin isn't real, he thinks as he feels something in him break.
19 - Balcony
He sits on one of the ledges near Mabe Village, staring out towards the ocean; Link's scared to go back to the village, afraid to face Marin now that he knows the truth about her and her island.
20 - Bane
Her laughter is the bane of his anger, it seems; he doesn't know why she laughs, only that that rich melodious sound soothes his soul in ways he didn't realize it needed.
21 - Quiet
Nights are quiet on Koholint, quiet enough that when they share a bed, they can hear each other's heart beating.
22 - Quirks
They both have their odd little habits; Marin is never without a fresh flower in her hair, and Link always wears that floppy green hat.
23 - Question
Link's voice is soft and shaky as he asks, "Ah, Marin, do you want to go, you know, to see Hyrule with me?"
24 - Quarrel
The two fight exactly once, and it isn’t exactly a fight; it does take Link several days and a lot of effort to make up for walking in on her dressing that one morning.
25 - Quitting
He forgets he's wearing his Pegasus Boots until after he's already in motion with Marin in his arms; he nearly breaks a leg during the very wild and abrupt stop he has to make to avoid hitting Tarin, although Tarin finds the entire incident absolutely hilarious.
26 - Jump
Marin loves when Link lets her ride on his back while he runs around and jumps the pits just east of Mabe; it's almost like they're flying!
27 - Jester
One of the many things Link has to explain is what a jester is; he no doubt looks like an idiot, but Marin laughs, and that's all that matters.
28 - Jousting
Marin looks sweet and innocent, but Link's no fool; he knows how hard she can shove when they're fighting for the lead in a footrace.
29 - Jewel
Link doesn't know what it is about that little doll that Marin seems to love so much, but the kiss she gave him after he finally won the damned thing makes it worth every Rupee.
30 - Just
Marin asks him, once, why he is so determined to fight the monsters; she has to smile, because it's so like him, when Link simply replies, "Because it's the right thing to do."
31 - Smirk
He doesn't even know he does it, but whenever he starts talking about his prior adventures, Link always gets this smirk on his face; she supposes his arrogance should annoy her, but he doesn't do it any other time, so she considers it just one of his little habits.
32 - Sorrow
Marin loves to hear his stories about traveling Hyrule, but she always wonders why it is that his voice falters and he has to stop whenever he mentions his uncle.
33 - Stupidity
It's become one of their routines as of late; Link invariably gets hurt after charging into a dungeon blindly, and Marin is there to scold him and dress his wounds.
34 - Serenade
Link uses every excuse he can think of to spend time accompanying Marin's voice with his ocarina; when not in the village, he takes every opportunity to play the song for himself, searing the notes and her voice into his memory.
35 - Sarcasm
He's teaching her the art of sarcasm; Marin enjoys it, even though Tarin doesn't really approve.
36 - Sordid
She finds herself oddly self-conscious when the ladies of the village start gossiping; Marin doesn't realize that it's because she's afraid that she and Link will be the ones whose secrets are made public.
37 - Soliloquy
Sometimes, when he's alone and can dare to make noise, he talks to the Wind Fish, complaining about the monsters and demanding that Marin be allowed to leave with him; the Wind Fish never answers back, but Link doesn’t know if he even wants to hear its answers.
38 - Sojourn
When she gets the opportunity to leave Mabe, Marin insists on going to the Animal Village; her friends love to hear her sing, and Link and his stories are growing on them all, as well.
39 - Share
Marin can’t remember when she and Link started sleeping in the same bed.
40 - Solitary
A hero’s life is supposed to be a lonely one, he thinks, but without loving arms to come home to, he doesn’t know how he'd remember what he's fighting for.
41 - Nowhere
Marin always wants to know where Link goes when he disappears for days on end, and much to his chagrin, "nowhere" is not an answer.
42 - Neutral
Now that word has gotten out that Link is fighting the monsters, it seems everyone in the village is coming to him for help; some days he thinks Marin is the only one who remembers he's still just a mere mortal.
43 - Nuance
She coaxes Link to sleep and then starts to carefully clean his shield; each of the various scrapes and scratches speaks volumes of both his bravery and skill.
44 - Near
Link blocks another rock aimed at him and sighs inwardly as Marin squeals and grabs his other arm; Link can only curse and wish Mabe Village and Animal Village were nearer to each other.
45 - Natural
He can see all of Koholint from the Tal Tal Mountains, as well as across the endless expanse of ocean beyond; if he can, he'll bring Marin up here to show her.
46 - Horizon
It looms always, reminding him of the world he longs to return to and her of the world she so desperately wishes to see.
47 - Valiant
One day Marin calls him her valiant knight, and the way he blushes and stammers brings another of her infectious smiles to her face.
48 - Virtuous
It's his last night on Koholint, his last chance to turn back and stop this quest, but he can't, not while the island is threatened by such evil; he has to keep moving, because he'd rather lose his dream world than let Marin and all of the others live in perpetual fear.
49 - Victory
It is irony, he thinks, that the song that will create his final victory on Koholint is also the song that will take her away from him forever.
50 - Defeat
And in the end, the hero is left floating alone on a piece of driftwood, with her song echoing in his ears and her name on his lips as he searches the skies for a seagull.
