1. Air
Air danced between their lips and Xu finally just kissed her, because she couldn’t take the tension anymore.
2. Apples
Fujin had deliberately placed an apple on Xu’s desk, enticing, crisp, delicious; a gleaming reminder of Xu’s new Instructorship and her even newer burden of having to help Almasy pass the SeeD exams one last time.
3. Beginning
When they had started out, it had been difficult-in the beginning, Fujin had never liked unnecessary chatter, but she found she could listen to Xu all day.
4. Bug
The room was bugged, that was for certain, but even still it didn’t quiet Fujin’s need to hold onto Xu’s hand like it was her last lifeline-in this place, it probably was.
5. Coffee
“COFFEE,” Fujin said, handing her a steaming mug, and Xu was a little surprised to find it tasted exactly the way she liked it-when she looked over at Fujin for an answer, the other woman just gave an unreadable smile.
6. Dark
Fujin hated the dark, always full of demons and past ghosts, and she groped across the bed to find Xu’s hand already waiting for her.
7. Despair
As SeeD, they weren’t supposed to feel despair, they were just supposed to do the job-as she stumbled down the ramp of the Ragnarok, Fujin wondered how she could still move when her heart hurt this badly.
8. Doors
It didn’t seem fair to be frowned on by SeeD, to have to let their relationship take place behind closed doors-Quistis Trepe was screwing Seifer Almasy, and no one seemed to bat an eye at that!
9. Drink
Xu examined the melting ice in the tumbler and then the clock-Fujin was late, but maybe she would have one more drink, just in case Fu was on her way.
10. Duty
“GO!” Fujin demanded, and Xu shook her head, even though her arm was starting to give and the grip on Fujin’s hand was slipping-even if it weren’t her solemn duty as a SeeD to never leave a comrade behind in battle, she sure as hell wasn’t letting Fujin fall.
11. Earth
It was raining and the earth had turned to mud; just as Fujin decided that maybe it was time to leave, an uncertain voice from behind her said, “Hi,” and her world stopped.
12. End
Halfway across the world, Xu felt Time Compression take hold of the universe and prayed that Fujin would find her way out, that it wouldn’t be their end as well as Ultimecia’s.
13. Fall
The leaves were turning their colors, ushering in a brisk fall, and Xu hoped that the change in seasons wouldn’t bring about a change of heart in Fujin.
14. Fire
“You hurt her, and I’ll kill you,” Seifer said, his voice cold, and Xu found that cold could burn just as badly as fire.
15. Flexible
Xu was taking up a good portion of the bed, but Fujin found that she was just flexible enough to turn out the lights without disturbing Xu’s sleep.
16. Flying
The first time Fujin had ever touched her, it had felt like the ground had fallen away and Xu was flying.
17. Food
The unwritten rule was that they did not talk about work over dinner-Xu was of the mind that food should never be spoiled by talk of war.

“Open mouth, insert foot,” Xu muttered with a sigh as Fujin stormed out of the classroom.
19. Grave
The name on the stone was permanent; Fujin wondered if the hole in her heart would be permanent as well.
20. Green
Was it possible that Seifer was green with jealousy over her relationship with Fu?
21. Head
Xu woke to find she couldn’t feel her arm because Fujin had taken the liberty of using it as a pillow for her head throughout the night.
22. Hollow
If being SeeD meant that you had to be hollow emotionally, Xu wasn’t sure that she even wanted to be SeeD anymore.

Xu had sworn an oath that she would honor and uphold the principles of SeeD; it was bizarre how one person could make her want to turn her back on those principles in an instant.

Fujin had always believed “hope” to be just another word for “denial,” but now, in the bland and sterile waiting room, she wished she didn’t have such a bitter outlook on the matter.
25. Light
Slowly, Xu opened her eyes against the horribly blinding light, and when she didn’t see Fujin, Xu decided that this was death.

Time kompression...the world was spinning, giving off illusions, dreams and nightmares...all she wanted to do was go home-Xu’s face flickered through the sky and Fujin just kept falling...

At first, Fujin had been cold and short with just about everyone, but somehow, in Xu’s presence, the metal walls she had erected softened and gave way to something...human.

As long as there were new days to wake up to, there would still be hope for their future.

Let’s grow old together, Xu wanted to say, but couldn’t; Fujin was just as aware that being in SeeD meant old might not come at all.

After war, there was peace-Fujin had always known this, but the idea still took some getting used to.

Her words could have been poison, and it wouldn’t have mattered because Xu would have believed them anyway.

“PRETTY,” Fujin commented as she passed by the bathroom, and Xu felt suddenly self-conscious as she smoothed the front of her dress uniform.

It was always raining whenever she and Fujin fought-Xu was beginning to wonder if their relationship was somehow secretly in tune with the weather.

She would regret nothing, Fujin decided, and she would say what she meant-if Xu didn’t like what needed to be said, then she was just going to have to deal with it.

Xu had always found them pretty, but Fujin seemed to hold a belief that roses were traitorous flowers-they were supposed to signify eternal love, but they blossomed and died too fast to hold true to that notion.

“SECRET,” Fujin had insisted when Xu had casually inquired about what she had gotten Seifer for his birthday-Fu had been so serious about the matter that Xu couldn’t help but laugh.
37. Snakes
Even in slumber, Fujin was coiled like a snake, prepared to strike-“Don’t you ever relax?” Xu had asked one morning, and Fujin’s reply had been a curt, “NO.”

With her fair hair and skin the color of new snow, Fujin had an elegant air that made Xu feel like a bumbling oaf in comparison.
39. Solid
Just the knowledge that there was a real and solid presence next to her was enough to allow Fujin to finally settle into sleep.

“It will be spring soon,” Fujin announced and Xu blinked-did Fu want to go on a vacation or something?

“I don’t know,” Xu said, when Fujin asked why, “you just make me feel stable.”

It was strange, really, how well they got along.

Whatever shampoo Xu had been using made her hair smell like summer.

They never talked about Seifer, considering the subject taboo between them-it would have made their relationship seem too much like consorting with the enemy, since he was Fujin’s friend and Xu’s least favorite person.

Fujin’s one eye watched her from the other side of the bed, and not for the first time, Xu wondered what ugly affairs had transpired to destroy Fujin’s sight and speech.

What Xu would never tell her is that she understood why Fujin had taken Seifer’s side in the war-Xu would follow Quistis to the ends of the earth, and that was what loyalty was all about, really.

Fujin downed the glass of water quickly, trying to chase away the dreams with the freezing liquid, and as she slammed the glass back down on the counter, she winced-she didn’t want Xu to wake and find her in this state.

Selphie turned the conversation to the Garden Festival, and Fujin welcomed the change of subject-Xu had asked questions she really didn’t want to answer right now.

The seasons were changing again and bitter winter wind was replacing the mild fall air; Xu decided that Fujin should come back from her mission soon, because it was getting too cold to sleep alone.
