Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Kakashi Hatake x Shizune
Theme set: Epsilon
Rating: PG-13

#01 - Motion
When her hands moved up to his face, he didn't object; when her fingertips slipped between his skin and the mask and paused, a question of consent rather than a sign of uncertainty, he had responded by moving closer, and as if that ended their nonexistent conversation, she grasped the navy material tighter and began to slide it downward.

#02 - Cool
As always, the rush of air against his heated lips was cold and sudden, a sharp change to the cloth that was constantly warm and moist from his light breath; when she didn't back down, his hand left his pocket to slide onto her hip, prompting her a step closer to where their abdomens almost touched.

#03 - Young
Before then, Shizune had never been involved with Kakashi outside of his hospital room, not even when she noted that his injuries seemed to grow more life threatening with each visit; if she voiced her anxiety, he would only curve his eyes and say he wasn't old enough to start thinking that way.

#04 - Last
"I'm honestly amazed you've managed to last to your age," she muttered, frowning at the laceration.

#05 - Wrong
"Eh?-you mean Kakashi-sensei and nee-chan are-they-he-that's just wrong!!"

#06 - Gentle
For the calloused weapons that they were, Shizune found that his hands could be amazingly gentle when he wanted them to be.

#07 - One
All those occasions in which they had been to each other's apartments and slept almost side-by-side on missions-and yet they still ended up making love for the first time in that damn hospital room of his.

#08 - Thousand
The day Naruto explained to her about Kakashi's "Ancient Taijutsu Supreme Technique" was the same, first, and only day that Shizune's laughter caused her to spit up her tea-all over the poor boy, no less.

#09 - King
Even though he had all but destroyed her at shougi, Shizune treasured the memory of that defeat, if only for the brief nuzzle he had given her neck and what that had led to when he leaned forward to claim her king.

#10 - Learn
Kakashi was surprised to learn that she truly saw herself as being so plain; he had always thought she was cute, but even he had been impressed by the glimpse he caught of her long legs when she thought he was still unconscious.

#11 - Blur
She wasn't sure if her tears or the rain came first, blending his retreating silhouette with the landscape until all she could see was a blue-grey haze.

#12 - Wait
They never discussed it directly, each sure of the other's thoughts on the matter-she wanted a child; he, preferably, a son-and so they chose, rather, to throw caution to the wind and let things happen as they would.

#13 - Change
He was deadly when he fought, but gentle in his touch; lethal in his fury, but patient in his ways; mysterious in everything that he did, and at the same time so desirable-and Shizune often wondered why he had set his sights on her.

#14 - Command
Of all the things she could have done right then, murmuring, "No, don't" as he went to kiss her again wasn't what he had been expecting-or wanting-but Kakashi obeyed, drawing back to look into the eyes that she wouldn't lift.

#15 - Hold
Exasperated, she said sharply, "Just know, Kakashi-san, that I am not at all opposed to sitting on you if that's what it takes to hold you here until I'm through," but then she caught the glint in his eye and, blushing, fell silent as she turned back to his wounds.

#16 - Need
She had lost patients before-sometimes right there on the operating table, sometimes under her hands in the field; it was a natural part of her career, however painful and scarring the guilt could be, but this was the first time that she had failed to save a child; and as roughly as she wiped her tears and as hard as she tried to conceal her grief on the way to Kakashi's room, there was no hiding it from him, and so two minutes after entering she was sitting by his side, taking comfort in the arm around her shoulders.

#17 - Vision
No matter how Shizune tried, her voice came out quiet as she told him, "The rate at which your retina has deteriorated isn't normal…the effect's been isolated, so your right eye will be fine, but…I'm afraid at this point the other won't be."

#18 - Attention
Kakashi's gaze flickered up from his book with an interest that hadn't been there before to quickly sift through the bar's crowd-and then catching sight of her familiar figure a good distance away from Genma's, it returned to the page and gave the matter no further thought.

#19 - Soul
She was the first in a long time to find her way past the apathy and independence that acted as his shield about the core that lay behind them-or perhaps it was more accurate to say that she had been the only one with enough will and patience to do so.

#20 - Picture
As long as she lived, Shizune would never forget the sight of walking back into the bedroom and finding Tonton curled up fast asleep on his back.

#21 - Fool
"Your behavior in response to my comment was all wrong," he explained calmly, "and that's where your trick failed-the real Shizune would have blushed and averted my eyes."

#22 - Mad
Before Kakashi could say a thing, Shizune's hand connected with the side of his face hard enough to knock him sideways into Gai; her voice, ready to break, began to rise, berating Kakashi for not telling her where he was going, refusing to take her along as the mission briefing had stated, and coming back half-killed to the point where he couldn't even walk on his own all while he was still recuperating from his last assignment.

#23 - Child
Headaches, fatigue, light nausea-Shizune had diagnosed those symptoms so often in other women that they were impossible to overlook when she began experiencing them herself.

#24 - Now
Staring down at his paralyzed enemy, Kakashi remembered speculating on why Shizune kept needles under her tongue during missions; now he knew.

#25 - Shadow
She thought he first kissed her in the shadow of that doorway to keep his face hidden; he later pointed out that she might not have let him if she'd known it was coming.

#26 - Goodbye
Their goodbyes were many and brief; Kakashi could be called away at any time for an emergency assignment, sometimes while Shizune was still patching him up from the last, and she was always subject to the tight schedule of the hospital and the Godaime's last-minute paperwork.

#27 - Hide
Although the situation could have been much worse, the sight of Tsunade standing in the doorway, arms crossed and biting back laughter, made Shizune want nothing more than to shove Kakashi away, retreat into a corner, and die of humiliation.

#28 - Fortune
Later, Tsunade commented wryly that Shizune apparently had better luck than her in both gambling and men.

#29 - Safe
"Don't worry," the stranger hissed through his mask, the arm with the gun working to keep her still amid her panicked struggles, "I'm not going to hurt you."

#30 - Ghost
When Shizune hesitantly inquired as to whom he was there to visit, Kakashi kept his gaze on the tombstone and paused awhile before replying, "…Just some ghosts from the past."

#31 - Book
Against her better judgment, Shizune set aside his folded clothes and took up the book, cracking it open to where the corner of a page had been bent; a week later, she still couldn't look Kakashi in the face without coloring.

#32 - Eye
To say he'd had his eye on her from the beginning would have been a lie; it had taken the elite genius three years to discover what he was missing.

#33 - Never
"Never?" he echoed, a skeptical, teasing sound in his voice; "That's not what you said beside me the other morning."

#34 - Sing
Shizune started and nearly dropped the tray of vials as Kakashi suddenly spoke up behind her: "I never knew you had such a charming humming voice."

#35 - Sudden
Without warning his still form sprang to life in a series of wet coughs, body shaking under her hands as he gasped for air.

#36 - Stop
And then losing what remained of her poise, her self-control, Shizune grasped his tattered shirt to keep him still, planted herself in front of him-like he couldn't overpower her, even in this state-and hit her forehead against his hard chest as she cried, loud enough to be heard over the pouring rain, "Kakashi, stop!"

#37 - Time
She had to bite her tongue to keep from lecturing him-time and numerous treatments of his wounds had taught her better, allowing her to refrain from giving any words of caution that she figured he would soon forget.

#38 - Wash
Kakashi didn't object or pull away-he just stood there, taking comfort in her touch and her tears and the feel of the rain soaking him to the skin, temporarily washing away the memory of how he had left her and the reality that he would have to do so again.

#39 - Torn
As tired as she still was, Shizune reached under the sheet and began to feel along his bare back, searching for and retracing the thin welts of torn skin with her fingertips to lightly heal them as he went on sleeping.

#40 - History
Kakashi was notorious for his flings-which was why Shizune couldn't understand how that one day turned into several days, and those days into weeks, and those weeks into months.

#41 - Power
Shizune knew he was strong-rumors, the battle scars she had seen over and over again, the enemies he had faced and defeated, they all told her that-but the extent of his power never really hit home until then: staring up at her unscratched rescuer, head throbbing from the wound on her brow as she registered that not a member of the ambush was to be seen.

#42 - Bother
With Sakura pregnant and only four months from helping Sasuke on his way to restoring his clan, the young mother-to-be had begun to poke fun at her former sensei, asking when he was going to do likewise and giving some less than subtle hints as to whom she had in mind to help him out with that task.

#43 - God
The day before she left for the Wind Country, Shizune joked that he should make his peace with the kami in case he was seriously injured during her absence; unexpectedly, he looked rather thoughtful after that.

#44 - Wall
The wall that he had built around himself, that held his emotions in check-that she had slowly begun to breach with time and patience-seemed to crumble the day he came in bearing a severely battered Naruto on his back, returned from the first of several unsuccessful attempts to retrieve Sasuke.

#45 - Naked
Shizune yelped, blushed, and grappled for her towel as she jumped up from the riverbank, but even amid all that, she failed to miss how his one eye skimmed instantly over her figure before he quickly turned away.

#46 - Drive
Clutching near the knife-wound with one hand and the car door with the other, Kakashi glanced rather incredulously at the nurse, sounding much calmer than he was as he stated matter-of-factly, "I see you weren't joking about your license revocation..."

#47 - Harm
He had, of course, never hurt her, and would never do so intentionally; he just wished that fact could apply the other way around, because damn if she couldn't be rough with those syringes when angry.

#48 - Precious
For that moment, seeing his masked face there in the doorway-bruised, bloodied, but alive-meant more to her than the world.

#49 - Hunger
He hit his knees with her pinned between them; the hand he had placed on her back to soften her fall moved around to her side, his thumb slipping under her shirt to caress her soft skin; he heard her moan, felt the sound vibrating in her throat as he kissed it; he moved up, biting playfully at her jaw for only a few seconds before going on to her mouth and satisfying the crave that clawed at him.

#50 - Believe
He called her beautiful; she blamed the painkillers.
