*

#1: comfort
Haru puts his hand on Kyo’s shoulder and waits, and when Kyo looks up at him it is enough that he tries to smile.

#2: kiss
Haru picks that moment-when they are out of breath and exhausted from their fight-to kiss him, Kyo’s first.

#3: soft
Tohru is surprised to hear Haru say, “His fur is as soft as his hair.”

#4: pain
“You’re always trying to take away everyone’s pain!” Kyo yells, as if it were a bad thing.

#5: potatoes
“It’s an interesting fact that potatoes,” Haru says, and catches Kyo’s gaze for the first time in a week, “have eyes”-Kyo isn’t sure whether to kiss him or hit him.

#6: rain
It rains for hours, their first night in the house they bought together-just their luck anyway, Haru thinks, watching Kyo sleep right through all of this excitement and hope.

#7: chocolate
Whenever he looks down at the chocolate she gave him for Valentine’s Day he feels guilty, and it doesn’t much help that Haru is standing next to him with his hand at the bottom of Kyo’s back.

#8: happiness
Kyo doesn’t know what happiness is, if it can be defined as that warm feeling in his stomach when Haru smiles.

#9: telephone
Haru is on the telephone, telling Hatori that he will not be coming back to the Main House tonight; Kyo watches him with unblinking eyes.

#10: ears
Kyo almost loses the fight on the day that Hatsuharu shows up at the dojo with new, shining studs in his ears.

#11: name
Kyo has learned a way to say Haru’s name in a way that makes his careful composure break and his eyes gleam.

#12: sensual
Kyo is a cat and his body is made for the sensual-it is long and lean and coiling bands of muscles under Haru’s fingers.

#13: death
Ever since Haru saw the door of the cage close behind Kyo, he has had an unrelenting fear of death.

#14: sex
Sex with Kyo has stages: fast and angry at first, painfully emotional at the end, and soft, softer than Haru would have imagined, in the afterwards.

#15: touch
When they are walking to Sensei’s house with Yuki and Honda-san and Momiji, and Kyo lets Haru touch him (a hand to his arm, an arm around his shoulder)-it is that afternoon that Haru realizes it’s real.

#16: weakness
Kyo’s weakness is Yuki-his glare and his fist and his strength-he can never put anyone else over this hatred he has felt all of his life.

#17: tears
The furniture is broken and the windows are shattered and Kyo is out of breath, and Haru is in the corner wiping away the beginnings of tears Kyo cannot see.

#18: speed
Haru has waited a long time for this car-a sleep, black, perfect machine-so that he can Kyo could take it on long ride in the country, lose themselves in the speed and the rush.

#19: wind
Sharp gusts of wind and a darkening sky signal a coming storm; Kyo, already weary, stomps back inside the house and mutters that he doesn’t want to hear about any of Haru’s feelings.

#20: freedom
Haru is surprised when Kyo chooses to spend the first day of his freedom with him.

#21: life
Kyo’s life sucks because the cats showed up again today, and Uotani cheats at cards, and Yuki always beats him, but Haru doesn’t want to hear it so he kisses him.

#22: jealousy
Sometimes Haru is selfish; sometimes he thinks only of himself; sometimes he hates the way Kyo glares at Yuki, or the way he smiles at Tohru like she is the only one in the room.

#23: hands
Kyo’s hands are carefully trained to hurt or to stop themselves from hurting, but Haru has never had that kind of control, and on his own hands are still the thin white scars where the glass cut in.

#24: taste
Haru is the only one who can interrupt Kyo when he’s cooking: he slides up behind him, puts one hand on his shoulder and his mouth up close to Kyo’s ear and whispers, “Just one taste?”

#25: devotion
Kyo has not mastered, as Haru has, the art of showing devotion; he is fumbling and awkward when he tries to make it clear that he cares.

#26: forever
What is forever-is it the time that the Sohmas have been cursed, or the time that Kyo will live in that cage, or is it only what Haru says it is-the definition of love?

#27: blood
Something changes in Haru’s blood when he grows Black; after a while, Kyo stops blaming him for what he does.

#28: sickness
Kyo is chronically healthy, so Haru does not understand his pale face or shaky knees or sweaty palms-until Kyo speaks-and then he sees: the sickness is love.

#29: melody
One day Haru tells Kyo that every relationship is like a melody, with its high notes and its low notes, and Kyo asks, “Would it be considered a low note if I said I wanted to hit you right now?”

#30: star
Haru has this image of Kyo that he loves: twelve years old, outside the dojo in the evening, looking up at the sky and waiting for the first star to appear.

#31: home
Even after they move in together, Kyo has a hard time calling any place that Haru is his home.

#32: confusion
So they kissed-so what-he’s still just the same punk kid he always was-and this doesn’t change anything-but the whole thing just pisses him off, and he just can’t see straight, and that pisses him off even more.

#33: fear
Of all the things Kyo does not understand, the first is how that scrappy, angry, determined little punk from his childhood could grow up into this teenage boy, slowly leaning in to kiss him and saying, “It’s okay to be afraid.”

#34: lightning/thunder
They are sitting up on the roof when the first bolt of lightning rips apart the sky, a perfect spring storm that Kyo (Haru doesn’t understand why) would much rather enjoy from inside.

#35: bonds
The bonds of the Juunishi are like ropes that bind them, trip them, entangle them, keep them always so close Kyo cannot breathe…even though in moments like these when he’s not sure he even wants to.

#36: market
When Kazuma sends Kyo to the market, Haru tags along, asking questions, throwing punches, almost knocking down a display of oranges-stepping, as always, on Kyo’s nerves.

#37: technology
Even as time advances-cultures change-technologies evolve, some things stay always the same: the binds of a Curse, the pain of loneliness, the sweet-sharp sting of first love.

#38: gift
“I’m not giving you anything-you know, for the holiday,” Kyo says, and scowls when Haru touches his cheek and says, “You already have.”

#39: smile
It’s a rare thing, to see Kyo smile like this-awkward, crooked, embarrassed, oddly bright-enough to make Haru’s heart beat quick.

#40: innocence
The Curse destroys their innocence early, if in different ways: Haru’s bruises as dark as his hair, Kyo’s thin boy wrist encircled by a bracelet of bone.

#41: completion
They’ve been flirting for so many months now (angry violent boy flirting), that this kiss (angry violent boy kiss) feels just as much an ending (completion) as a beginning (new start).

#42: clouds
Clear day-green grass-white clouds in blue sky above them-that Kyo can lie here with him and enjoy the day for what it is, that is a sure enough sign for him he is in love.

#43: sky
Now Haru understands why Kyo loves heights so much-when he’s up here on this roof he feels like he can touch the sky.

#44: heaven
Haru slowly closes his eyes, trails his lips down Kyo’s neck, glides his fingers down pale skin, and whispers, “Is this heaven?”

#45: hell
“It’s real hell on me when you go Black, you know?” Kyo yells-angry, frustrated, and fed up-as Haru sits stiff in the corner with closed eyes.

#46: sun
Kyo stretches out, long and languid in the sun, unaware that Haru is following the stretching lines of his body with his eyes.

#47: moon
Sometimes, at night, the moon reflects bright in Kyo’s shining cat eyes.

#48: waves
One summer, they go to the beach together, and Haru drags Kyo, hitting and protesting, into the harsh and crashing waves, just like old times.

#49: hair
Kazuma laughs when Haru tells him that he wants to dye his hair, and remembers another little boy who, not long ago, stared into the mirror critically and told him the same thing.

#50: supernova
Haru still believes, despite everything, that love-their love-could be overwhelming and bright, explosive and beautiful, resisilent and eternal.
