Fandom: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Pairing: Jack Skellington / Sally the Ragdoll
Theme set: Gamma
Rating: PG13 (if that)
Warning[s]: Involves pretty much every incarnation of TNBC, including both Kingdom Hearts and the TNBC game, Oogie's Revenge. Also, does it count as spoilers if the movie's 14 years old? If so, beware.
Technically it's the 31st where I am, so...Happy Halloween, everybody! Enjoy!
1. Ring
“But Jack, I can’t…”exclaims Sally as he pulls her into the center of the circle of dancing creatures; taking her hand in his own, he grins at her and says, “Don’t be afraid.”
2. Hero
“You don’t need to be my savior, Jack; you just need to be you.”
3. Memory
One of her first memories of the world outside of Dr. Finkelstein’s cold, sterile lab is of Jack, leading the citizens of Halloweentown in a rousing chorus; is it any wonder she loves him the way she does?
4. Box
“Whatever could it be?!” Jack cries excitedly as he rattles the little box, and Sally feels his joy was well worth the price of the gift.
5. Run
Jack is sneaking quietly into Oogie’s dungeon, but when he hears the ragdoll’s scream, he forgets caution and begins to sprint.
6. Hurricane
The storm blusters outside, causing the tower to dip and sway, but inside they are bundled up together in blankets and PJs, and with Sally’s head on his shoulder and Zero floating in his lap, Jack cannot remember being so happy before.
7. Wings
Even if love didn’t really let you fly, Sally thought as she plummeted towards the ground, it certainly felt like it.
8. Cold
The same touch that froze many a man with terror warmed her patchwork heart in the nicest way.
9. Red
Jack plays with a strand of her red hair and suggests that, although red isn’t really a Halloween color, perhaps they could make it so; Sally only smiles shyly and blushes the same shade as her hair.
10. Drink
Jack marvels at the ghostly butterfly that drifts out of the wine bottle, and wonders what other secrets this remarkable woman is hiding.
11. Midnight
Night was, by nature, the time of the spooks, the ghouls, all the denizens of Halloweentown…but midnight was their time, when they would stroll or run or dance down the streets, when there was no one but them.
12. Temptation
“It’s a shame I’m all you need,” Jack grumbles jokingly, “for whatever shall I do with this new sewing machine otherwise?”; Sally crinkles her nose at the temptation, but gives in and throws her arms around his neck, laughing.
13. View
Jack is lost in reverie yet again, and Sally jokes that, with his skull so lost in the clouds as it is, the view must be wonderful; turning to look at her, Jack agrees.
14. Music
Song and Magic and Mystery seem to cling to Jack, and Sally wishes her life could be so full of Music and Wonder.
15. Silk
As Sally makes the final adjustments to the Christmas outfit, Jack can’t help but notice that, stitches aside, her hands are softer than the silk Sandy suit.
16. Cover
She knew she looked ridiculous, crouched behind the tombstone, but oh! he understood her!
17. Promise
He had sworn to Sally that he would never again steal someone’s holiday unannounced…which is why, this time, he’d shown up on Sandy’s doorstep in his best suit with some of Sally’s homemade bat biscuits…couldn’t hurt to ask, could it?
18. Dream
“Oh, I dreamed a lot of things when I was younger,” Sally tilts her head up to look at him, the moon glinting off her hair, “but I never really thought any of them would come true.”
19. Candle
Sally has always been terribly shy, electing to stay in a separate room even after she moves into his tower, so it surprises Jack when he sees candlelight and hears her softly calling his name one night.
20. Talent
Between potion brewing and sewing, her nimble fingers and lovely voice and agile feet, Jack thought Sally gave herself far too little credit.
21. Silence
Suspended as she was above the giant spider, Sally said nothing; she wouldn’t give Oogie the satisfaction of hearing her scream Jack’s name.
22. Journey
As he makes his way through the frosty air, he thinks of all the people who’ve helped him make this trip: Zero, the Mayor, the townspeople, and the shy ragdoll girl who seems to spring to mind more and more easily as of late.
23. Fire
She wanted so badly to be a part of his Christmas, but her vision of the tree in flames warned her otherwise.
24. Strength
They don’t argue often, but whenever they do Jack is reminded of the fact that when everyone else fell to their knees singing his praises, Sally stood strong in her conviction that he was dead wrong.
25. Mask
The boy with the pumpkin mask covering one eye is adorable, to be sure, but she can’t help but think that Jack just got out of a mountain of trouble, and this boy and his key are just bringing more of it.
26. Ice
Her skin is the same hue as the icicles that are fascinating her; Jack suddenly reaches out to hold her close, for fear that she too might melt away.
27. Fall
The leaves are starting to turn, and the whole town is abuzz; after all, this is the first Halloween that they’ll have a Pumpkin Queen along with their King.
28. Forgotten
It would be better, far better, for him to ignore her and her prophecies of doom, for him to be the savior of Halloween and Christmas both, for him to forget her and her silly little crush.
29. Dance
Every time Jack may over-balance and topple, Sally holds him steady, and whenever she hesitates, he swings her forward; in this way they fly over the dance floor and through life.
30. Body
Pale bone runs stitched skin; not for the first time they marvel over how such mismatched bodies fit so well together.
31. Sacred
She looks like an angel with the full moon a halo behind her head as she kneels on the snowy hill; for a moment, he hesitates to join her, fearing he might be profaning something holy.
32. Farewells
He’s gone, flown away into the night, and Sally curses her inability to even say goodbye.
33. World
“Just imagine, new worlds out there to explore!” Jack sighs as they watch Sora and his companions go, at which Sally smiles; “It would be lovely to see them with you, Jack.”
34. Formal
Her life with Dr. Finkelstein was so sad, so lonely, and she wants so badly to be coldly polite with him as she leaves; still, despite the drudgery and isolation, the harsh words and bad temper, and the final abandonment, she hugs him with tear-filled eyes as she goes, and has to lean on Jack as she walks away to keep from stumbling.
35. Fever
She knew she had no blood, she knew this, and yet, as Jack leaned towards her, she could feel her whole face heat up.
36. Laugh
Sally doesn’t laugh often (life with a mad scientist doesn’t offer many chances for laughter outside of crazed cackling), so Jack counts it as a victory every time he can make her giggle.
37. Lies
He knows she trusts him to the ends of the earth, so it bothers Jack a little when Sally hides something from him solely for fear of upsetting him.
38. Forever
One of the best things about being dead, Jack muses as he watches his sleeping wife, is that there is no question of “’til death do us part”.
39. Overwhelmed
“Quickly, quickly, you must see this!” Jack exclaims as he grabs her hand; Sally loves his exuberance for all those things that mystify him, but it can be a little overwhelming at times, and really, she had just sat down!
40. Whisper
“Foolish girl!!” Finkelstein yells, but now Sally knows kind people exist in this world, and she finally has the courage to whisper back, “Not such a fool…”
41. Wait
So much of her life has been spent waiting for Jack, waiting for him to notice, waiting for him to return, and a tiny part of her wonders if love could really be worth it.
42. Talk
Jack had to admit, he had been a little worried about actually talking to the woman he loved (she was so sheltered, and so shy), but before long he discovers that she has an imagination to rival his, and their conversations go on ‘til dawn.
43. Search
He would never said it aloud, but Jack had been looking for someone for a long time; one would think that a King would have more luck when it came to the fairer sex, but he was alone and that was that.
44. Hope
Oogie Boogie growled; even now, captured and facing death, the little ragdoll refused to give up hope.
45. Eclipse
A normal man would grumble about fools’ errands, tired legs, and ripped clothing, but Jack smiles even wider; how many normal men could bring their ladyloves eclipse-blooming asphodels?
46. Gravity
Sally, lovely though she is, is not entirely built to withstand the downward pull of gravity, and every evening must tighten her stitches to keep from falling apart; Jack begins to help her before long, and chuckles that, with the way she keeps his head together, it’s a fair trade.
47. Highway
“I could have sworn it was this way…” Jack gazes down from the sleigh and scratches his skull at the crisscross pattern of roads and freeways while Sally sighs and shakes her head; they could have asked Mr. Claus for directions, but oh no…
48. Unknown
“But we don’t know what could be in there”, Sally tugs her scarf tighter, staring into the dark woods; Jack takes her hand and pulls her forward, “That’s what makes it fun!”
49. Lock
Jack is not a skeleton given to violence, not at all…but he could have happily chucked Lock, Shock, and Barrel off a cliff for interrupting the very promising conversation he and Sally had been having in Oogie’s dungeon.
50. Breath
Jack kisses her, there on Spiral Hill, and if Sally had ever had breath, it would have been taken away.
