# 22 Journey: Ella had come all the way from Albuquerque on hope and scrap of paper, on which the name “Eppes” was written; her name finally figured out at last.

# 2 Hero: Don turns around and there she is, a girl with his eyes and someone else’s mouth, and for an instant he nearly stops breathing, because he knows who this girl is; she’s his.

# 42 Talk: He sits in a chair, staring across the clear metal table at her, (because she’s so much like him, she really is) and finally his mouth opens and says, “So you’re my daughter.”

# 43 Search: “Don,” David holds out the paper to him, “the tests came back positive. So who’s her mom?”

# 21 Silence: “Where is she?” his voice is slightly shaky, because he knows what she’s gonna say before she says it; “My mom died last month,” and for a while neither of them says anything.

# 10 Drink: There’s some water in front of her, and Ella’s kinda thirsty but not really; her dad is staring at her, do they always do this?

# 25 Mask: “I’ve never had a dad before,” she says quietly, and it’s true, she hasn’t; “Well, I’ve never had a daughter before.” he replies, watching her carefully stoic face, finally finding the courage to reach out and touch her hand.

# 23 Fire: Ella’s trying to pretend that his touch isn’t having an effect on her, but it’s getting harder to ignore the fire under her skin; Down girl, she tells herself, he is your dad.

# 1 Ring: “So are you married?” and Don bites his lip and tries not to look at Megan, who is getting coffee and doing a really good job of getting it all along her shirt sleeve as she struggles to stifle the giggles.

# 4 Box: It’s hard to believe that one little box could hold everything she wanted to take from her mother’s house: well, one little box, 2 suitcases and 1 overly large carry-on.

# 13 View: It’s a really nice apartment, but obviously a bachelor pad; what do you expect, Ella thinks as Don shows her a dusty guest room, you didn’t call ahead.

# 18 Dream: When Don wakes up the next morning, he think that it never happened, of course he doesn’t have a daughter; but then he wanders into the living room and, shit, he has a daughter.

# 16 Cover: She had a hell of a time trying to fall asleep last night: the sheets were too cold, the comforter smelled funny and she really, really wanted something with a little more warmth in it.

# 28 Forgotten: Ella’s quiet, very quiet- it’s hard to believe she’s there sometimes, Don thinks as he curses and turns the car around; he had forgotten she was supposed to come to work with him.

# 36 Laugh: She tries not to look at him but it’s really hard; finally Ella breaks down laughing as Don stands behind her chuckling, at the same time realizing it’s the first time he’s heard her really laugh in two months and he loves it.

# 5 Run: Don woke up one night and Ella was gone, her bed cold and empty- he was this close to calling the police, thisclose- then he finds her on the roof and grabs her hard, trying to slow his breathing down as his heart thuds- she didn’t run away, she didn’t run away.

# 8 Cold: “I thought it never got cold in California,” she grumbles as Don hands her a towel to dry her hair, “Now I find out it rains, too?”

# 37 Lies: When Don asks her if Nadine ever talked about him, Ella lies and says no- she doesn’t want to hurt him, she doesn’t want him to know that her mother did, all the time- she wants to keep him to herself.

# 46 Gravity: There are a few choices here, Don thinks, as his feet uselessly kick the air and his fingers curl tighter around the bar- he can wait until David comes, he can try to pull himself up, he can let go and pray that gravity will be kind- but somehow he highly doubts it as he hears David’s thundering footsteps racing up the stairs.

# 11 Midnight: “I kinda hate you right now,” Ella says, accepting the water he offers her- Don only smirks and leans back; hey, she was the one who crawled into bed with him in the middle of the night.

# 45 Eclipse: “You’re my someone,” she finishes, somewhat lamely, leaning against the headboard, resolutely not looking at him- the tears are welling up- but Don only pulls her against his chest and kisses her hair; Ella finally begins to cry, and Don lets her, because he loves her too.

# 24 Strength: “That is not fair,” Don says the day Ella moves his desk by herself; she grins and flexes, “Textbooks, baby.”

# 25 Ice: She shivers as the coolness of the freezer hits her face; Don finds her there ten minutes later, her head tucked in the freezer, bits of ice caught in her hair.

# 19 Candle: Don loves Christmas, although this is the first year he’s had a tree in his apartment- normally he goes over to Charlie’s- but the lights flickering comfort him somehow, like multi-colored candles in the dark.

# 41 Wait: She’s running but can’t catch up, she can hear her mother calling but she can’t answer…. Don comes home to Ella’s cries of “Wait for me!” echoing through the apartment.

# 7 Wings: For a minute Ella is suspended in the air, arms outstretched, trying to grab hold of anything- then the ground is barreling up to meet her and all she scream is a loud wordless scream but what she really wants to scream is Don.

# 33 World: “You can’t save the world, Don,” Megan says quietly; Don ignores her and continues to stare at Liz through the ICU window, the monitor mocking him with every beep- she saved Ella when no one could, he owes her everything.

# 27 Fall: “I think I’ve fallen in love with someone,” Ella whispers in the moonlit darkness; Don hears her, but doesn’t respond- he can hear the question in her voice and wants to answer but he can’t, because he can’t say that to her.

# 17 Promise: “Don,” Megan sighs, pressing her forehead against his temple- “Just promise me you won’t hurt her.” she whispers; Don stares straight ahead, but turns for a brief second, pressing his lips to her forehead, because all he can do is try.

# 12 Temptation: Ella is standing against the wall, the low light behind her illuminating her hair- for a minute she is Nadine, leaning against the lamppost, “Hey there, officer.”- and Don can’t help himself….and then he is kissing her.

# 6 Hurricane: “God, you…” Don groans, barely audible; Ella just smiles and leans in again- some part of her can’t believe she’s doing this- but then Don meets her mouth and the feeling is lost amid all the other ones.

# 30 Body: It’s so warm and delicious, the feeling of a body next to hers.

#3 Memory: He wakes up in a bed that is not his, with a body that is not a random girl next to him; his head hurts at the memory, but as Don sneaks out of Ella’s bed, he can’t help turning back just to see her hair spread across the pillow.

# 39 Overwhelmed: “That can’t happen again, Ella,” he says, but she can’t concentrate on his words because there is something loud and hard throbbing in her head and the world is getting fuzzy- “Don, I…” and he catches her when she falls, that must mean something.

# 31 Sacred: This is the umpteenth time in so many weeks Don has been in the hospital- he’s really getting sick of that antiseptic smell- and he finds the nurse’s station by instinct, and arrives in Liz’s room to find her awake and staring at him; without saying a word, he buries his face in her lap and whispers, “I almost lost her, Liz.”

# 40 Whisper: “Don? Don?” her voice is oddly hoarse- she’s had a breathing tube shoved down her throat for three days, of course she sounds odd- “Can I get some water?”

# 32 Farewells: They had agreed that maybe Albuquerque was the best place for her, that they had tried and it was nice while it lasted; but that was a load of horseshit, Don realizes, as he watches her plane take off and remembers the feel of her lips on his, the tear that had dripped between them-another girl that slipped through his fingers.

# 49 Lock: Her room is so empty and sparse, Ella realizes-two years gone and already her home is a different place- she can’t stand it and spends the whole night crying.

# 9 Red: Don takes another sip of another beer and tries to remember what life had been like before, before Ella, before everything: but he can’t and stops trying- the door to her room has been firmly locked since he repainted the walls the day she left.

# 38 Forever: “It won’t be for forever, Don,” Charlie says; but forever means different things to different people-to him, forever is every day now.

# 14 Music: “Oh, dammit, I think I left my iPod at…” Ella trails off, her eyes suddenly filled with tears- “Ella, are you o-“-“Don’s. I left my iPod at Don’s.”

# 20 Talent: He hasn’t told anyone about that one night, that one night with Ella, but one day Megan asks and he tells her; she yells at him for a hour but finally collapses- “I should turn you in… but I won’t …‘cause you’re hurting enough.”

# 29 Dance: It’s the FBI’s annual Christmas party and the people are twirling around and around, a blur of red and greens and blinking lights- Don has already been out with Megan twice and Amita once and even Colby once (for a joke, he swore)- and now as he sits Megan came up; “Don, there’s someone here for you.”

# 15 Silk: “You look nice,” he says and that’s all he really needs to say, because she’s here, finally she’s here.

# 34 Formal: “Can we start over?”

# 50 Breathe: He pulls her to his shoulder and Ella breathes in the scent of her father, her dad, and finally feels at home.

# 35 Fever: “So I was thinking that-“ and then Don is all over her, their lips mashed together and Ella doesn’t pull away, because she wants this too; and then he is pushing her into the bed and its so warm and good- “God, I missed you.”

# 47 Highway: “So we’re definitely going to hell, right?” Don asks the next day; Ella squints at him through day-old mascara, “Most likely, yeah.”

# 44 Hope: “We can make this work, right? You and I… we can do this?” Don looks at her, his little love, and finally smiles, a real, soft smile- “’Course we can, baby. ‘Course we can.”

# 48 Unknown: And yeah, right now their life is a little hectic, but Montana is supposed to be beautiful this time of year, Boston too; so they are going to try, they are going to try and even if they don’t get their happy ending, its fine, because at least they found each other.
