One of the reasons Beauty looked forward to the long, dull walks to the next Hair Hunt Troop base was because of the game they silently played: Don Patch would casually brush his fingers against hers and she would pretend not to notice.

After all the times she’d seen him perform odd gymnastic feats in the midst of wigging out, she couldn’t help but giggle at his stubbornly embarrassed expression when he told her that he couldn’t dance.

He coughed and grew irritated when she accidentally blew her dandelion in his face; but he softened when - successfully pinned down - she smiled and kissed his down-turned mouth, shyly telling him her wish came true.
#04 - Wonder
Beauty knew a little about first aid it seemed; when one of the Ko-Patches got a little overenthusiastic in his wigging out and scraped his knee, Beauty treated the cut and scolded him appropriately whilst Don Patch watched, mystified.

He didn’t know why, but he took a strange pleasure from the sight of a flustered Beauty; during a battle, his displays became more extravagant, more dangerous, more daring- all so that she could keep her eyes on him for a millisecond longer.

Most of the things in his life he’d done on whim - he was as surprised as Beauty was when he leaned in and closed the distance between them.

They met in a kind of desert land on the outskirts of civilization after her village was destroyed - since then, they’d never been apart.

He never drank - none of them did; that’s why he thought she’d lost her mind when she’d staggered into his personal bubble, pressed her nose to his, and told him he was "cuuuute."

When Heppo successfully impressed Beauty with a bouquet of roses for Valentines Day, Don Patch gritted his teeth and crushed the daisy in his fist - he might have won the battle, but he had not won the war!

Don Patch watched Beauty brush away a tear that escaped her blue eyes with a white, gloved finger, and suddenly felt angry at what a fool Heppo was for being up on the altar with Suzu when Beauty obviously loved him with all her heart - like she would never love him.

Heppo demanded to know who’d given Beauty the unsigned heart-shaped birthday card, but other than confused looks and an awkward cough from Don Patch, nobody could give him a satisfying response.

Beauty was unprepared for the peculiar pang she felt when she looked up and saw Don Patch stiffly walking away from the group of well wishers that surrounded the newly wed Heppo and herself.

She saw how boys’ faces fell when they realized that despite her name, she wasn’t extraordinarily attractive (she was quite plain), and felt a little better when Don Patch socked it to ‘em(yelling nonsense about screen time).

Don Patch felt his face heat up when he realized he’d stumbled into the woman’s section of the outdoor hot springs and ran into a very startled, very scantily clad Beauty.

Beauty’s slow breaths and soft snores were interrupted by a series of whimpers and gasps that only died down when a small gloved hand reached out to caress her cheek, coaxing her back into a peaceful slumber.

He was never much for romance, didn’t believe that rubbish about people breaking each other’s hearts, but even he had to admit that the sight of them kissing or holding hands made him feel like kicking something.

Sometimes she got the feeling that he hated her; for what, she didn’t know, because she had never done anything to deserve his fury... except love him.

The little Ko-Patch squirmed and exclaimed with delight when Beauty slipped the loop of the balloon’s string around his wrist- then, as Don Patch watched them from the corner of narrowed eyes, he hugged her around the middle and she grinned bashfully; Don looked away, frowning in rare thought.

They were alone on the balcony; Don Patch thought about confessing it all then and there - his longing, his jealousy, his frustration - but then Heppo rushed up behind her and whisked her giggling figure away to dance, and he thought about it no more.

He loved her so much and even if she couldn’t return his love, he wouldn’t let her forget him; he would push her, he would tease her, he would do anything to gain any type of attention from her - he would be the bane of her very existence.

Don Patch wasn’t usually quiet around the campfire(or anywhere else really) and Beauty was surprised to find that even with his constant bullying, she felt a deep worry that made her watch him carefully all through dinner and follow him out into the forest when he slipped away from the group.

Beauty knew that if this was to work, she would have to accept all of him, but it still unnerved her a little to wake up and find herself beside a face covered in layers of blush and eyeliner who was determined that she call them "Patches".

"Why do you always pick on me so much?", came the question out of the blue one day; the answer never followed, because it didn’t need to be spoken.
#24 - Quarrel
She never fought with Heppo like she did with Don Patch; flinging insult after insult, voices rising decibel by decibel, flushing faces inching closer and closer - until they made contact and the fight abruptly died, faces red now for different reasons.
#25 - Quitting
There were times when she would almost give up trying to understand him and his weird ways - then there came the day when she realized that it wasn’t that she couldn’t quit, she didn’t want to; she never thought of stopping again.
#26 - Jump
The difference between them was that she looked before she leapt and he leapt before he looked.
#27 - Jester
On the rare instances in which she laughed instead of sighed with exasperation at his antics, he was glad to be playing the fool.
#28 - Jousting
Heppo bought her a rose - Don Patch picked her daisies; Heppo bought her a necklace - Don Patch made her a friendship bracelet; Heppo vowed to hold and to have her til death do they part - Don Patch loved her forever.

"No one has to know..." he whispered through the darkness, pretending he couldn’t see the tiny jewel-shaped tear that had leaked out of her eye.

"Just- try to take things seriously for once, okay?!" She grumbled in frustration; telling him about the baby would be harder than she thought.

Although he didn’t always show it, there was a smirk there every time he’d successfully pushed her out of the spotlight or onto the ground; it was this taunting expression of self satisfaction that quietly infuriated her, made her want to kick his face in, and most of all, made her wonder what he would do if she just grabbed him and kissed that smirk away.
#32 - Sorrow
"I love you," Heppo says, grinning adoringly at her; Beauty opens her mouth to respond in kind, but chokes when she notices Don Patch staring, and instead pretends to not have heard rather than lie to him.

It was funny really - she had always thought that he had been the stupid one.

Beauty always felt free to serenade the woods as she bathed in a spring conveniently far removed from the camp; Don Patch liked to follow her and sit behind a tree facing away with his arms folded and his eyes closed, listening.

"Right, Bobobo, and next you’re going to tell me that the reason Beauty’s been avoiding me is because she’s madly in love with Don Patch or something - sure!"

She’d smile fondly at Heppo across the table, but her mind would never stray from the small gloved finger tracing possessive circles on her thigh; the whole charade made her feel filthy in a way that she’d never be clean again.

Suzu giggled; listening to Beauty go off on a tirade about her husband’s irresponsibility and quirky wiggin habits was cute, because when she was done and Suzu asked her if she wanted a divorce yet, Beauty would smile at the swollen lump in her belly and tell her it was worth it.

Suzu frowned; every time her husband left for another long wiggin travel, Beauty would immediately rush to her and spill out her worries in tears that plopped into her cup of coffee - Suzu never asked her if it was worth it anymore, because that was an answer not even a caress of her growing belly could ensure.

When Don Patch saw Beauty holding Yaya, his first instinct was to snatch the doll away and scold her for touching his baby; but as he watched her brush her pink tipped nails curiously over the polished, painted face, something inside of him skipped a beat and he decided that he would share for once.

Late at night after everyone else falls asleep, Don Patch and Beauty lie awake, thinking about the same thing even though they aren’t aware that the other is still astir.

Bobobo had certainly realized what was going on between his friends sooner than Heppo had - he was more observant than they gave him credit for - but he decided that this was a battle in which he would remain neutral.

The first time that his eyes lingered upon hers a moment longer after he’d shoved her to the ground again, Beauty knew something had changed.

As eyes widened, forks clattered onto plates, and Heppo fainted dead away, it suddenly occurred to Beauty that announcing her engagement to Don Patch at dinner was more tactless than brave.
