I. Comfort
Although she is always surrounded by luxury, she finds herself the most comfortable in his rough embrace.

II. Kiss
The first time he - (un)expectedly, spontaneously - closes her lips with a kiss, she can feel time stopping and her reason evaporating and she tries to pull back, out of it, but she finds that she can’t - won’t - doesn’t want to -

III. Soft
They whisper that he is a hard man with his cold eyes and scarred face and metalfleshbone body, but when he graces her with his hesitant smile, she truly cannot imagine anything softer.

IV. Pain
As she lies chokinggaspingdying on the black Mustafar sand, she can’t help but wonder when her greatest pleasure morphed into her greatest pain.

V. Potatoes
The first time she cooks for him, the meat is charred and the vegetables are uncooked and the soup has flour in it, but he consumes the sticky stains of sugar caked on her lips and declares it all delicious.

VI. Rain
She loves the rain, if only because of his wide-eyed wonder every time he beholds it.

VII. Chocolate
The first time he tasted chocolate, he was appalled by its bittersweet flavour, yet after that last, passionate kiss on Mustafar, he finds himself unable to taste anything else.

VIII. Happiness
He fails to understand how one insignificant glance across a crowded hall can inspire in him such a feeling of elation.

IX. Telephone
She hates the fact that she can never call him in peacetime because caution has declared such an action to be reckless, but that she can call him all she likes on the front lines because she knows that he will never respond.

X. Ears
Whenever he hears her voice, his heartbeat speeds up so fastfastfast that he almost thinks that he’s dying and he can’t help but wonder if he’s slowly losing his mind.

XI. Name
She loves the way he says her name - caressing it with the tip of his tongue, as one does the name of a saint (and after that, she never wants anyone else to speak her name ever again).

XII. Sensual
She can feel his warm lips on her neck and she’s so hot that she’s quite sure she must be ill, but he’s slowly moving his tongue downwards and there’s no time to be sure of anything -

XIII. Death
He only truly dies when he is told that she is dead, that he killed her and that she is deaddeaddead -

XIV. Sex
For a period of time that could have been anywhere between minutes and hours and several days, they lose themselves in each other, thinking of nothing and feeling everything - and then, when those minutes and hours and days have passedendedgone, they lie together, damp with sweat, their heavy breathing echoing harshly in their ears and they wonder just why it took them years to act on what took a split second to occur.

XV. Touch
In that moment when the lava closes over his scarredbroken face, he realises that despite the burning fire tearing up his body, and the pain in his heart, and the searing beds of fire pooling around him, that he is so, very, cold (and his wife is dead and lying on the floor not ten metres away, so there shall be nobody to warm him ever again).

XVI. Weakness
“You’re breaking my heart!” And the words are broken and crumbling into the heated air, much like the woman that speaks them -

XVII. Tears
The moment he breaks is the moment he realises that he no longer has the ability even to weep for what he has lost (because crying made one human and allowed one to accept, and if he was not a human and if he could not accept, then what was he now?).

XVIII. Speed
He never drives quite as quickly when she isn’t awaiting him at his final destination.

XIX. Wind
The caresses he bestows on her with his tender lips are as fleeting as the wind.

XX. Freedom
When he kills the Emperor on the Death Star, he makes the second free decision of his life - the first, he recalls with a bittersweet smile, was marrying the woman who inspired it all.

XXI. Life
He finds himself bereft of a life without her.

XXII. Jealousy
He crushes her in his arms, objectifying her, and she can’t help but feel flattered by such possessiveness, although she really knows that she shouldn’t.

XXIII. Hands
The first time he tentatively shows her the twisted mass of metal that is now his right arm, she simply takes it in hers and acts like nothing has changed.

XXIV. Taste
Try as he might, he can never forget the taste of her lips.

XXV. Devotion
She swore to follow him everywhere, even if it meant following him to her death.

XXVI. Forever
He swore to love her forever, and when he reflects on the events of Mustafar, he can’t help but think of it as yet another broken promise.

XXVII. Blood
The first time he sees her bleed, he is shocked because he hadn’t been aware that angels were mortal.

XXVIII. Sickness
When she finds her skirts beginning to strain against her stomach and when she is sick in the bathroom every morning, she can’t help but wish for his presence, even though she knows that he is thousands of light years away and won’t come when she calls.

XXIX. Melody
The first time he hears her sing, it is a lullaby, old and worn with the passing years and after Mustafar, he finds himself unable to rid his mind of the words.

XXX. Star
Sometimes, she looks at the stars and tries to guess which one he is on right now.

XXXI. Home
When he returns to the Senate after yet another stint on the front lines, it takes all of her ice-queen self-restraint not to rush to him and throw herself onto him then and there; instead, she adopts a calm, restrained attitude of welcome (the antithesis of everything he has ever been) and formally takes his (shaking) hand in hers.

XXXII. Confusion
She remembers having to explain to him exactly what she means by “time of the month” - after that, he never asks her to enlighten him on anything ever again.

XXXIII. Fear
In this war, it is too easy to imagine that he is dead and then her world collapses in on itself and her denial is swallowed in a scream and she wakes up with a gasp, her sweaty palms grasping the silken fibres of her nightgown like a drowning man clinging to a lifeline, reminding her that it is not so (not yet, anyway).

XXXIV. Lightening/Thunder
She grows to love the lighteningthunderstorms, because it’s an excuse for him to grasp her tightly in the folds of his cloak and warm her body with his own.

XXXV. Bonds
He searches for the bond that lit up his fast-greying soul, but there is only an unravelling silence where his heart used to be and he truly realises that she is dead.

XXXVI. Market
Whenever she drags him shopping, he always ends up carrying her bags (he never complains though, because it is another way to be close to her).

XXXVII. Technology
Sometimes he can’t help but wish that he could fix relationships as easily as he fixes a droid.

XXXVIII. Gift
When he presents her with the thin blond braid that represents his childhood, she holds it close to her beating heart and vows that she will never receive a better gift.

XXXIX. Smile
He wonders if it is natural that he would travel to the ends of the galaxy and back again just to see her smile.

XL. Innocent
She had always imagined a nine-year-old child to be innocent, but when he regards her with the haunted eyes of a slave, she wonders if he ever had any innocence to lose.

XLI. Completion
They always said he would be impatient, even if he had all the time in the world at his hands to make it not so.

XLII. Clouds
She points out the clouds to him and warns him of the approaching storm, and he looks at her with all his nine-year-old wonder and asks how sand manages to float in the sky like that.

XLIII. Sky
She once expressed a wish to touch the sky, so he lifted her up and helped her reach higher.

XLIV. Heaven
He has never felt as blissfully happy as he does when he is lying next to her and watching her breathe.

XLV. Hell
The white-hot lava of Mustafar burns into his mind and creates an indelible memory that he knows will haunt him to the rest of his days, because her body is lying motionless just a few feet away from him and it’s shatteringburningpainpainpain -

XLVI. Sun
She hates the sunlight, if only because it signals dawn - the time at which he has to leave.

XLVII. Moon
The moonlight gilds his features silver, and she reflects that nobody else would make as beautiful a statue.

XLVIII. Waves
She remembers his wonder the first time he saw the waves on the lake at Theed, followed by his look of disgust as he attempted to drink the water.

XLIX. Hair
She threads her hands through his thick curls at night and wishes that she could cut one off to keep close to her heart.

L. Supernova
Their love destroyed a galaxy and brought an era to its knees, but in a supernova explosion over Endor, their love cements the rebirth of the Light.

END.
