01.Comfort
They held each other close, sobbing for the friends and families they had lost; finding comfort in arms that weren’t so different after all.
02. Kiss
That was her last memory of him - a quick peck on the cheek that just brushed her lips - that and a promise to find her again.
03. Soft
He was covered in a soft, furry down that she loved to run her fingers through; it was all done for his squirming, giggling reaction.
04. Pain
He whined as she pulled another thorn from his fur, chiding him for falling into the briar-patch - the references to a certain children’s tale were far more painful than the actual burs.
05. Potatoes
By the third week even she was a skilled potato peeler; staying in the little town was a big improvement over being on the run, and she loved playing house-wife.
06. Rain
It was a cold, rainy day and there was nothing to convince Endive to get out of his well-protected hammock; the fact that Alecka had joined him earlier (crying from a nightmare of Omega) really had nothing to do with it.
07. Chocolate
She nibbled on the pilfered confections, wondering why he hated his caste positions so much; everything would be so much easier if he could just accept the fact that he was a thief.
08. Happiness
They didn’t get much of a chance to slow down, being always on the run, but they took their moments of peace when they came and then spent them as children do, doing silly, pointless things that made their hearts lift and their eyes light.
09. Telephone
He was enthralled with the little mirror, even though it was broken beyond repair and laughed when she was able to fix it just enough to get fuzzy messages from Ayin.
10. Ears
The first thing she did upon meeting him was tug on his long, flexible rabbits-ears; it took her months to realize that he hated it; he was far too polite and attention starved to beg her to stop.
11. Name
“Smart Aleck” “Cabbage Patch” “Baby Master” “Bunny-boy” - the insults flew until Ayin waded in and separated the two squabbling children, earning him shouts of thanks and gratitude from the rest of the group.
12. Sensual
He seeped in the bath, submerged up to the tip of his nose, and so he didn’t need to duck far when Alecka cannon-balled into the pool, drenching Ayin and the rest.
13. Death
Endive had seen the monster innumerable times now, ever since seeing it slaughter his family, and he was willing to do anything to protect his companion from its whispered menace “Omega…”
14. Sex
He was fourteen and she was ten, and he couldn’t explain to her why he was getting increasingly uncomfortable with her constant presence - and so he was immensely grateful when they hooked up with Mathemew and ‘Finity and had an excuse to sleep in separate tents.
15. Touch
She had a need for companionship that manifested in strange ways; her fingers were always flickering to him; brushing his fur, holding his hands; even her eyes followed him, making sure he was always there, and not going to get hurt like everyone else.
16. Weakness
She was a fragile little girl and it was his job to protect her; he just wished it wasn’t so easy.
17. Tears
Alecka couldn’t even cry, so instead they ran, leaving her father slumped on the floor (hands out stretched as if he were still protecting her) - so they missed the howl of grief that burst from his murderers lips and never saw the tears that Omega shed for his fellow Maister.
18. Speed
That was his strength, the inhuman (true, as he was far from ‘human’) speed and agility he possessed; it didn’t make him a better fighter, especially compared to the terribly powerful monsters they faced, but it certainly helped when they ran away.
19. Wind
The first night the chasm rolled and rumbled in answer to the mighty winds that blew through it; they held each other close and would never have believed that in six months time the nightly breezes would become a comfort and an indication that all was well in the world.
20. Freedom
They were city people in full, but during their first months together they lived vicariously, finally free of rules and restrictions that they didn’t like and could not understand.
21. Life
She called the small creature to her hands and held it close, feeling its quick pulse and immediate loyalty; most Maisters could summon huge ferocious beasts and, though small, her friends were just as useful in battle.
22. Jealousy
Ayin sighed as Endive shied away from his hand, assuming (rightfully) that the boy distrusted him; he would have been surprised to learn the boys hatred was based around simple jealousy; then again, who wouldn’t be envious of the fawning affection Alecka bestowed upon her godfather?
23. Hands
Her hands were small, delicate and five-fingered while his hands were large four fingered paws - the surprise was how much more agile his fingers were than hers, but she laughed when he made another coin disappear, enjoying the simple tricks.
24. Taste
He recoiled, forcing himself to not spit out the horrid concoction she had created for dinner, and making a mental note never to let Alecka cook again.
25. Devotion
He pulled a small amulet from his shirt, explaining that it was his peoples sacred symbol, she in turn explained the Maister philosophy; then they made a joint decision to spent the ‘day of rest’ in the best form of worship - twelve hours worth of uninterrupted sleep.
26. Forever
“When do I get to go back home?” She asked innocently, not knowing how much he’d been thinking about that very question, wondering if they would ever be able to find home, or if they would instead be eternally on the run, harrowed by the dreaded Omega.
27. Blood
The moment was branded into her memory - the impending arrow, the flash of motion, and then the utter, utter certainty that it was her father behind that mask, fallen to the ground, bleeding his heart out, all for her.
28. Sickness
He could barely move and there for it was up to her to take care of them this time, so she pulled on a clean apron and followed his instructions to the letter, resulting in an explosion of chicken-noodle soup and the both of them getting the flu.
29. Melody
She hummed and danced, balancing precariously on the wall, concentrating fully on the wind rushing around them, shaping it with her voice, calling it with her rhythm, sending it with her soul - out to do her biding in the wide world she didn’t understand.
30. Star
The watch at his breast began to glow as she kindled the light within him, unlocking his magic and banishing the darkness.
31. Home
He stood blinking in the shattered remains of his village, memories playing before his eyes, tears falling down his cheeks, lost in a profound darkness that only eased at her touch.
32. Confusion
She spun, looking desperately for her companion, terrified that she had lost him and was now alone in a strange city; then he was at her side again, placing a hand on her shoulder and leading her from the dangerous world around them.
33. Fear
Omega had them, had her completely under his power, and oh gods he was going to hurt her just like he killed Endives mother and Endive could do nothing but start to scream and scream and- and wake himself up with a start, to find Alecka safe next to him, and Omega nowhere near.
34. Lightning/Thunder
Storms were common within the chasm, despite the fact that it was technically underground; Endive could find them shelter quickly; but this time they ended up drenched to the bone before they reached the cave.
35. Bonds
She slips her mask on and for a moment sees the universe as a Maister should, full of dots and points and strings that tie the world together.
36. Market
They were adorable, two little children and a big basket; they vamped the part almost past believability; Endive made sure to stash as much food into the basket as possible, knowing that sooner or later someone would recognize them and they would be on the run again.
37. Technology
The little wind up contraption stuttered and died in Aleckas hands and she bit her lip not to cry - she knew Endive had wanted to play with it, but now it was broke and she’d never be able to fix it.
38. Gift
For his birthday Alecka did all she could to make him happy, instead she burned his toast, got him fired from his job and ‘accidentally’ released her powers; by the end of the day they were on the run again and she was in tears (but he was secretly laughing his ass off).
39. Smile
They beamed, and Ayin felt his heart crack just a bit…that look should be on their faces all the time, not only during the rare occasions when they were not hungry, on the run, or scared out of their wits.
40. Innocence
Endive had a large family, and had all illusions about life and love stripped away at a very young age…but it still didn’t prepare him for having to explain it all to a girl.
41. Completion
It was weird, not having him around, but Alecka shrugged the feeling off and happily followed after her fellow Maister; it was not like Endive would ever get himself into trouble!
42. Clouds
They watched the rain come down in sheets, protected in their little cave - it was a memory that both would look back upon and treasure for the rest of their lives, though neither knew it at the time.
43. Sky
His jaw dropped in amazement, and he stared until tears ran from his eyes, holding her hand and grinning; It was so big, and so, so blue.
44. Heaven
A city of stone and glass, perfect in every way…it was hard to believe that the people who had created this paradise had also created the monstrous Omega and deeded Alecka and Endive to die by his hand.
45. Hell
Hell was the dread he felt every time he walked through another gutted ghost town, seeing images of his loved ones superimposed over the nameless corpses; clutching her hand, desperately hoping that she wouldn’t look back to see him so utterly stripped of his strength.
46. Sun
There was always light in the Chasm, but it was a drifting, uneven half-light, having had to make its way down through two miles worth of shifting shadows and uncompromising stone…mostly Chasmites looked to each other for light, and ignored what the fierce sun could not bring them; and there was no one better to bring light than a little girl with golden locks and a beaming, angelic smile.
47. Moon
Someone accused her of being a moon priestess, a heretic and a heathen; Endive simply scoffed and asked how anyone could mistake a girl with corn-yellow locks for a worshiper of the night. (Later he wished he had bit his tongue instead)
48. Waves
It was a vibrant memory, surf and sand, and one of the only times Alecka had seen true sunshine; yet that memory was being replaced with one of her new family and endless waves of green, not blue.
49. Hair
Her pigtail whipped around her face as the boat crested another wave and caught another gust of wind…and she laughed, because (even though it shouldn’t be) piloting the catamaran was fun.
50. Supernova
It wasn’t fair, the way her magic, the way all magic worked; had it been fair, she could have directed the burning chaos at the monster, instead of simply making another mess for Endive to clean up…if he survived.
