Emile/Cable - South Pacific

Dec 09, 2008 23:26

Title: Several Enchanted Evenings
Fandom: South Pacific
Pairing: Emile de Becques/Joe Cable (Contains a lot of Cable/Liat and Emile/Nellie though too. I can't ignore blatant canon.)
Theme set: Beta
Rating: Highest it goes is between a PG-13 and a very light R.
Warning[s]: References to sex, although not explicit. Male/male, blah blah blah. Also spoilers for the musical "South Pacific".
Notes: Several times I seem to describe their homosexual relationship as "wrong" or whatever. Let me get this straight, I am not against homosexuality in any way. Because this takes place in the 1940s and 99% of the characters in the play are racist, and the whole theme of the musical is racism and prejudice, I'm going to assume that homosexuality was viewed as "wrong" as well, so I'm trying to get a realistic perspective. I mean, it was the frickin' 1940s. A girl dumped her boyfriend because he was once married to someone of a different race. So, obviously, if marrying someone of a different race was "wrong", then a homosexual relationship is most likely going to be "wrong". Again, there is nothing wrong with homosexuality, I am just trying to show the general feeling of the time period and the characters of the play.

Jesus, what a disclaimer. :|

Anyway, this takes place mostly during the "Operation Alligator" part of the play, which is mainly an off-stage thing, so I can interpret it how I want. :| Also I fail at knowing things about war.

Sentences are in no particular order, although the last one fits as being the last.

#01 - Walking
As soldiers, they crept slowly through enemy territory, wary of traps at every step, and for the first time since the fateful loss of their lovers, actually feared death.

#02 - Waltz
“Do you dance, Lieutenant Cable?” Emile asked in his thick accent as they sat together, turned in for the night, and Cable shot the older man an odd look; “Running out of conversation material, de Becques?”

#03 - Wishes
In the dead of the night, beautiful clusters of stars could be seen, and the two often clutched hands and dreamt, hoping that wishing on such a superstition could end all this war and prejudice.

#04 - Wonder
Nellie couldn’t help but wonder if Emile was ever going to return from the war, or if he even still loved her after what she had done to him

#05 - Worry
Thinking about whether their lovers were concerned for their safety or not only made their nights rougher and more painful.

#06 - Whimsy
It was only one moment that Cable had suggested to Emile that they run away together after the war, but that idea was so silly that even Cable thought it dumb after a short while.

#07 - Waste/Wasteland
There were no romantic, slow walks on the beach dates for them; the most romantic area they had was a cramped tent in the midst of a warzone.

#08 - Whiskey and rum
On the night they decided to spy on the Japanese troops and risk death, they both drank themselves silly, enjoying what they figured would be the last time they had fun.

#09 - War
If it wasn’t for this damned war, Cable never would have been gone, and Emile’s heart never would have been ripped apart.

#10 - Weddings
It was an unspoken rule that neither would talk of their lovers and what could have been, but even through their nightly engagements, each knew that that was all they thought about.

#11 - Birthday
The first time one had openly expressed their feelings for the other, it had been Cable’s birthday - he figured nobody would remember or even care, seeing as they were off fighting a war, but that night, Emile had said, “It is your birthday, no?”, planting a soft kiss on the lieutenant’s lips.

#12 - Blessing
In his last moments of consciousness, Cable actually felt thankful that the wounds he received didn’t kill him right away, even though the pain was unbearable, but instead he received three extra days to enjoy what he really cared for in life.

#13 - Bias
It was odd that Cable would not marry Liat due to her race, but when faced with life or death, he would even go so far as give himself up to someone of the same sex.

#14 - Burning
The two men had been so desperate for physical contact that they hardly shared any soft, sweet moments at first; even their kisses were full of lust and burning desire.

#15 - Breathing
Cable felt the hot breath of Emile on his neck as they huddled together, hiding from the Japanese troops, and it excited him like nothing else.

#16 - Breaking
A loud shot rang through the air, and in an instant, Cable was on the ground; knowing that he could face a similar fate, Emile still dove out into the open to retrieve the lieutenant’s wounded form.

#17 - Belief
“I know Nellie does not love me, so I have no reason to live,” Emile had said, prompting an immediate response from Cable, who said that Emile had every reason in the world to keep living.

#18 - Balloon
The two immediately hid whenever they saw anything near in the sky, never wanting to take chances in case a harmless floating balloon or a bird could actually be an enemy plane.

#19 - Balcony
When Emile had invited Cable to his estate before they were to go off to war, the Frenchman stood on the balcony, looking at the moon and sighing; Cable stood with him, but instead of looking at the moon, he stared at its light as it bounced off the older man, highlighting his beautifully sculpted face.

#20 - Bane
Emile lay awake one night, cursing Cable and his existence in his mind; while he could marry a Polynesian woman, he still could not wrap his mind around the fact that he was actually sleeping with another man.

#21 - Quiet
Not a sound could be made in the most critical moments of war, or else their lives would be over, so to quiet their heavy, fearful breathing, the two would often hold one another and feel more at ease.

#22 - Quirks
There were certain things that they enjoyed about each other’s company; Cable could easily bring to mind about how Emile’s beautiful French accent ran through his ears like music, almost putting him into a trance.

#23 - Question
Cable had asked Emile what his children were like, and he responded with a smile, telling him all about them, then asking the lieutenant about his home life; Cable suddenly grew quiet as he remembered Philadelphia and his girlfriend there, which brought Liat back to his mind, and he realized that becoming a lieutenant had left him with a messy love life, and now he had the most unlikely partner of all sitting right next to him.

#24 - Quarrel
Cable had made the mistake of bringing up Nellie, causing Emile to snap and defend the woman of his dreams, and the lieutenant had turned in for the night, grieving and giving up any hope he had of turning the Frenchman’s devotion toward a more realistic goal.

#25 - Quitting
Each of them knew that they did not care if they perished in their mission to spy on the Japanese, but it was clear they no longer cared about their dignity after their rough encounter in the bushes.

#26 - Jump
Cable didn’t realize just how much he craved physical contact when Emile had jumped, holding onto him and pushing him out of the way of an oncoming assault.

#27 - Jester
Despite the war, despite losing Liat, and despite the overwhelming feeling that he was going to die from these wounds, Cable felt so at ease with Emile, and couldn’t remember the last time he had laughed like that.

#28 - Jousting
There would obviously be no competition for who Cable would be with after returning from Operation Alligator, as Liat was the more “acceptable” choice, but while he was still fighting this war, Emile would continue to win against Liat for whom he thought about more.

#29 - Jewel
Mary would have given a boar’s tooth bracelet to Cable for free, but it had meant so much more to him when Emile presented him with one; he knew that it was most likely an unused gift for Nellie, but that made it all the more significant.

#30 - Just
Emile knew that it wasn’t just for Nellie to reject him simply because he was once married to a Polynesian woman, but then why did he still feel so wrong (and yet so right!) when with Cable?

#31 - Smirk
The two would refer to each other formally by their last names, but in a moment of passion, first names were uttered, bringing a smirk to the other’s face.

#32 - Sorrow
Cable was about to give up, thinking that Mary had already married Liat off to a French planter, but spending time with Emile made the ordeal that much more bearable, and in time, he did not think of it as much.

#33 - Stupidity
While not as bad as Mary, Emile could sometimes get extremely annoying with his forgetfulness of the names of well-known American places, often referring to “Philadelphia” as an odd concoction of syllables.

#34 - Serenade
Emile was able to seduce Nellie with his beautiful voice, but there was no room for song in the middle of war, so he had to look for other ways.

#35 - Sarcasm
Emile was sometimes too literal with his interpretation of the English language, so when Cable would make sarcastic quips every once in a while, Emile would often seem extremely confused and sometimes hurt, making the lieutenant have to explain himself.

#36 - Sordid
Each night, both of the soldiers knew that what they were doing was completely wrong, but as passion overtook the scene, it made it all the more exciting.

#37 - Soliloquy
“Lieutenant Cable, you will never know how you changed my life...” Emile whispered in French after he had safely returned to his home, staring up at the sky and sighing.

#38 - Sojourn
Cable was going to die, he knew, but even with his last few breaths, he suddenly realized that even through the fighting and the hiding, this sojourn at Japanese territory left him with no regrets.

#39 - Share
Billis would probably entertain Cable with his stories of one-time flings at Bali Ha’i, but the lieutenant would be unable to share anecdotes of his similar encounters in return for fear of being kicked out of the army.

#40 - Solitary
Emile had to go about this particular mission alone, and while he knew he wasn’t in immediate danger at the moment, he still wished that Cable was with him, as he would have felt safer.

#41 - Nowhere
The shots from the enemy troops had seemed to have come out of nowhere, so as quick as lightning, the two jumped down onto the ground, their sweaty forms rubbing up against one another as they ducked out of the way of impending death.

#42 - Neutral
Emile had wanted to stay out of this war, but in the end, it wasn’t all so bad, as he never would have had a chance to get to know Cable.

#43 - Nuance
After this whole war debacle was over, Cable planned to go back and marry Liat, regardless of her race; however, he couldn’t help feel somewhat guilty over simply abandoning Emile for the Tonkinese beauty, but he knew that there would be no other option.

#44 - Near
After receiving those horrible wounds, Cable laid and rested, but the awful pain was negated by the fact that Emile never left his side.

#45 - Natural
It was a shame that they had to share their affair amidst a warzone; had conditions been ideal, they could enjoy the natural beauty of the South Pacific, soaking in the hot sun on a beautiful beach, instead of hiding in cramped tents.

#46 - Horizon
Enemy planes were on the horizon, and this time it was Cable’s turn to play hero as he grabbed Emile and hid him in the bushes so they wouldn’t be spotted.

#47 - Valiant
Cable should have been scared when he received those wounds, thinking-no, knowing he was going to die, but instead he was brave, telling a worried Emile that everything was going to be fine.

#48 - Virtuous
Emile was supposedly doing everybody good by participating in this war, but he could not figure out why supporting the killing of others was “good”; Cable, however, as an active lieutenant, was able to offer many rational explanations as to why war was indeed necessary.

#49 - Victory
Everyone was happy to see Emile return from Operation Alligator, and they praised the war victories that this brought, but the Frenchman could not bring himself to even remotely smile.

#50 - Defeat
Emile held the corpse of the other in his arms, pressing his head to the lieutenant’s chest and weeping over the loss of a second lover; if the Japanese found him now, out in the open, he would have no regrets.
