Note: Like
fliz0ntoast, the prompts here are out of order, although all are present, in order to tell something of a story. I didn't take the idea from her, though. ^^ Comments super-duper appreciated.
12 - End
"Due to irreconcilable differences traceable to the men's understandable resentment of my position as leader of White Fang during the end of Khushrenada's War, I am resigning my position as Head of Mars Terraforming, effective immediately" -- and Zechs pressed send and slammed the laptop lid down, his fingers curling into tight fists.
03 - Beginning
Relena wanted him back, wanted to talk to him, and hell, he did miss his little sister, but he felt sick to his stomach, like the damn thing had twisted into a Gordian knot and the back of his throat burned, which meant it was past time for a visit to some shitty hole that asked no questions; if there was one place for shitty holes it was L2, so he scheduled a layover on L2X621.
09 - Drink
A familiar face? - but 02 was halfway to wasted if the glasses lined up in front of him were any indicator, and Zechs insisted, “You didn’t drink all that,” but the small, compact young man in front of him laughed dryly, "He-men come in all shapes and sizes.”
07 - Despair
Staring at the bottom of an empty glass was the aristocrat's way of dealing with things, Zechs thought, but 02 informed him that the droplets left in the bottom of a peasant's glass were cheaper, that's all.
10 - Duty
"I'm heading back to Relena," he mumbled into the glistening shot glass, turning it in his hands -- "she needs me," he shot at the smaller man beside him, who nodded, half-smiling as though he'd forgotten how not to.
23 - Honor
He knew he had no honor left -- not after betraying everyone, his father, his sister, his commander and oldest friend, his country, his army, his noble enemies, his ignoble allies, his planet -- his shoulders hunched beneath the weight of his wrongdoings, the glass cool against his forehead.
13 - Fall
Zechs rose to his feet, took a step, and crumpled, the whole world blessedly dissolving, and he only got impressions of things from then on -- sticky floor, the hot close air, a flash of violet.
14 - Fire
In an instant 02 had knelt -- "Are you okay? Merquise, come on, this isn't cute," and Zechs shook his head, his hair a heavy platinum blanket, like a fire blanket, suffocating him.
21 - Head
"I called Relena," 02 said from the bedside as Zechs managed to lift his aching head -- 02's eyes, whoa, violet, narrowed as he added, "I didn't think she wanted her brother back hungover, so I'm officially detailed to take care of you."
22 - Hollow
"I don't need to be taken care of," Zechs retorted hollowly, and 02 rolled his bright eyes towards the ceiling as Zechs's head, entirely without his permission, thumped back down onto the pillow weakly.
24 - Hope
"You wouldn't happen to have any tea," Zechs said flatly, forcing himself to an upright position, one hand pinching the bridge of his nose in an attempt to ease the beast that roared inside his skull.
46 - War
"02?" the young man echoed, and Zechs almost felt abashed for thinking of him, calling him by that wartime code -- it's just a habit was on the tip of his tongue but he bit it before he could say something even more offensive and disastrous.
44 - Taboo
02, no, no, his, just him, his eyes flared and the former Gundam pilot said very clearly, "My name is Duo Maxwell, Milliardo"; Zechs Merquise took the point.
30 - Peace
Duo watched L2PAN, the L2 cluster's Public Affairs Channel, like it was a soap opera, alternately glaring, shouting, cheering, or throwing things at the television depending on who had gone up to speak.
40 - Spring
“Spring or winter?” Duo inquired suddenly, startling Zechs out of his immersion in Colweek; Zechs didn’t have to think before he answered, “Winter,” and Duo muttered, apparently unable to help himself, “Yeah, sure, the nuclear kind.”
17 - Food
Duo ate every meal like he was facing several months of famine, often without pausing to taste the food.
06 - Dark
"Does this colony just not know how to manage its electricity?" Zechs inquired in exasperation of the darkness as Duo rooted around the cabinet for a kerosene lamp, muttering curses.
16 - Flying
"You ever miss Tallgeese?" Duo asked wistfully, his long fingers smoothing flat a glossy two-page spread of Deathscythe-Hell.
27 - Metal
Zechs could hear the heavy bass of Duo’s music from across the room even though the ex-pilot, after a pained request from Zechs, wore earbuds -- their effect was somewhat negated by Duo’s loud, enthusiastic, and startlingly talented vocal accompaniment.
04 - Bugs
Zechs peeled up the sole of his shoe, peering beneath it at the flattened roach like a curious little boy, as Duo ruefully commented, "I hope you didn't think a little thing like the cold vacuum of outer space was gonna stop them.”
05 - Coffee
"Tea is for ponces," Duo teased, hands wrapped around his touristy L2 coffee mug as Zechs pretended with dignity, sipping his Darjeeling, not to hear him.
08 - Doors
The Prince of Sank was used to elegant entryways with fluted columns and billowing tapestries and majestically appointed doors, but he liked this apartment door, a white, scarred metal affair with 2B painted on in peeling letters, better.
18 - Foot
"Put your socks on, the floor's cold," Zechs mother-henned, only to get a sock in the back of the head when he wasn't looking.
19 - Grave
Zechs wondered blearily, curled up on the sofa with a bottle and his endless thoughts, if Treize was comfortable in that sunny grave on the hill where he’d been interred, and the thought made him want to cry but God knew it had been years since Zechs had been able to weep, so instead of crying he drank straight from the bottle and stared at the scratched coffee table.
31 - Poison
Calloused hands pried Zechs's own off the bottle of gin; he groaned in protest as it was ripped from his needy grasp.
26 - Lost
He floundered, without the chilled bottle in his hands ungrounded, and then he felt his wrists pushed together by a pair of relentless hands and someone kissed him hard, and Zechs was grounded again, L2X621, Chicago Sector, Cermak Street Building 26 Apartment 2B -- Duo Maxwell, he registered with faint awe, Duo Maxwell leaning back, straddling his knees not his lap and holding him quite still.
29 - Old
"All I'm saying," Duo explained, his light tone at odds with his darkly serious eyes, "is that you can choose one of two clichés right now, drunken sex or drunken vomiting, and since I will sex you for free, there's really no point in puking on your own hair, especially since I'd have to clean you up or face your sister's wrath," and he said a little bit more but Zechs shut him up by shoving his tongue in Duo's mouth because Zechs wasn't patient under the best of circumstances and shitfaced didn't count as anywhere near the best.
37 - Snakes
Zechs's hands snaked beneath Duo's t-shirt, fingers cold against hot skin, to pull the younger man flush against him, accepting in that move a substitution, a new drug, Duo instead of gin, how odd that the man was more intoxicating than the alcohol he thought as his hands rode up the hard muscles of Duo's back.
39 - Solid
Zechs woke up with a headache, nothing new, and a bedmate, now that was new, a solid weight in his arms, curled like a child against his naked chest… brown hair, unbound, that shone in the artificial sunlight coming through the window, and a face no more innocent asleep than awake.
34 - Regret
"I, I, I, I," Zechs was actually stammering, and Duo looked up at him and said, "I came onto you, so don't apologize; I just wanted you to stop drinking my gin."
35 - Roses
Sometimes Duo caught Zechs lingering at flower stands, his fingers ghosting over brilliantly red roses, tracing the stems, the thorns.
32 - Pretty
"Okay, no, see, I'm pretty," Duo admitted, lip quirking at the hated epithet, "but you, Merquise, you're like a damn rock star, okay, you're past beautiful and straight up into 'godlike' -- colony girls hung up OZ promo shots of you in their lockers, Zechs, they still do! half of OZ's teen recruits just wanted some of that blond glory to shine on them, too-"
33 - Rain
The malfunctioning colony weather controls decided on rain the next night, and every flat metallic drop of it seemed to pelt Zechs Merquise specifically, as if the one-time Lightning Count were made for storms.
02 - Apples
Local grocers charged exorbitant prices for Earth-imported fruits, but Duo had a weakness for the crisp sweet taste of Macintosh apples, and if there was anything Zechs was good at, it was exploiting a fighter's weakness.
38 - Snow
"Turn-about, I should have known," Duo snorted, "your sense of timing always was a pain in Deathscythe's aft," as Zechs uncurled Duo's hands from the empty gin bottle and pressed a kiss to the other man's bitter lips, rain turning to slush turning to snow outside as weather control malfunctioned again.
36 - Secret
Each had access to the other's classified files, and each knew it, and it was really something to see the details of their lives spilled out like that -- "Zechs Merquise took the leadership of the colonial terrorist group White Fang into his command," "Duo Maxwell committed to a period of training under Professor G for an unspecified length of time" -- so calmly ghostwritten, so professional (then Duo set the files on fire, but Une understood, although she’d just used a paper shredder).
49 - Winter
"Don't like the winter cycle," Duo mumbled against Zechs's lips, still kissing him between words, "it's so fucking cold," so Zechs pulled him in closer, a hand stroking Duo's colony-pale cheek, pressing smooth the thick brown hair, "they'll never make it work," but this, Zechs found, this man, his arms, this room, this kiss, they made this work just fine.
15 - Flexible
"Yowza, Trowa!" Duo hollered, watching his former fellow pilot twist acrobatically along the tightropes, and Zechs buried his laughter in a mouthful of popcorn as Duo turned to him and said excitedly, "Didn't I tell you the Circus's worth admission?"
28 - New
They both thought in terms of very small (price of a wrench, a pocket knife, shampoo) and very large (cost of Gundanium alloy shipments in amounts sufficient for repairing 7.4 metric tons and 16.3 meters height of mobile suit), so this business of a "household budget" -- what a civilian concept -- had them both flummoxed, if only briefly.
47 - Water
"Put bottled water on the budget," Duo suggested, peering over Zechs's shoulder-- "that's how you do it, right? List everything you need to pay for? This is just a glorified shopping list, god this is so dumb -- wait, Zechs, what are you --" and Duo burst into laughter as Zechs, biting back a smirk, wrote precisely, purchase ten gallon hose apparatus for hair care products & application thereof.
45 - Ugly
Funny how he only kept the hair because it grew so fast it almost wasn't worth cutting, and then Treize told him it was useful, marked him as extraordinary even though Zechs didn't feel very extraordinary, and Noin just told him to do what he wanted with it and Zechs didn't care one way or the other, so here he was in front of the mirror with a meter of history brushing the small of his back and he realized he had never quite liked the way it looked because it made him feel like Fabio, some cheap hero for a tawdry play for the stupid public, but no one had ever told him, "Here, soldier, take these scissors, cut that off," so he never had, but he was under no one's command now save his own and Zechs's feet were heading out the door so fast he barely had the time to swipe a jacket before he locked the door behind him as he left.
42 - Strange
The barber let Zechs hold the long ponytail, the entire platinum-blond meter, in his hands, the weight heavy and odd resting in his palms, spilling out, too silky to stay still even when he closed his fists around it.
43 - Summer
"It's summer in Sank," Zechs said to Duo's look of complete shock, relishing it (it was not easy to shock Duo Maxwell); "I thought I'd stay cooler, this way," and he ran a hand through the short fine civilian-cut hair, watching Duo's arrested gaze follow the simple motion helplessly.
48 - Welcome
Duo bounced onto tiptoe and threw his arms around Zechs's neck, laughing, "it looks great, Zechs, it really does," feeling the relief in the taller's man's body as he untensed.
01 - Air
Zechs didn't tell anyone, but the re-re-recycled colony air of Duo's home gave him the hugest headache for the first few weeks, until he got used to it.
11 - Earth
If I never set a foot on Earth again it'll be too soon, thought Zechs, closing his eyes against the sight of the blue planet through the shuttle window, and he didn't realize he'd spoken the thought aloud until Duo's fingers lightly tapped his own and Duo said as-if casually, "But the sunsets are so beautiful."
25 - Light
"Look, we're lucky," Duo said, nudging Zechs, then gesturing towards the shuttle window with his chin: "We get to see the sunrise over Earth," and a surge of gold spilled over Earth's pregnant horizon.
20 - Green
"Look at this grass," Duo kept saying, on his knees, petting the green strands and getting dirt all over his hands, as Zechs sat nearby and smiled like a fool, drinking Duo's wonder.
41 - Stable
Duo agreed with some reservation to touring the stables with him, but balked at touching even the gentlest palfrey until Zechs took his hand and laid it on the smooth long neck of a wide-eyed colt.
50 - Wood
Duo'd seen forests before, of course - during the war, while on Earth, the few glades remaining had been excellent places to hide his Deathscythe - but it was different wandering the woods with a lover on his arm instead of start-up codes and launch parameters in his head; better.
