May 27, 2009 15:16

Fandom: Pokémon
Pairing: Commander Charon x Rotom
Theme set: Delta
Rating: G - PG-13
Warnings: Some spoilers for Pokémon Platinum. Human/Pokémon relationships. Gratuitous abuse of run-ons, commas, and semicolons.
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything relating to Pokémon. If I did, then Pluto wouldn’t have been changed to Charon in the translation process.

01. Air
A strong breeze swept through the valley and sped up the Windwork’s hilltop turbines, much to Rotom’s delight; Charon watched it rush toward the turbines and silently wished that the wind could be strong enough to pick him up so that he could join Rotom in its gleeful jaunt around the spinning blades.

02. Apples
A frustrated whine drew Charon’s attention to his desk, where Rotom had tried to pick up the slices of apple sitting around but had accidentally cooked them with its raw electric energy... he shook his head with a bit of a chuckle; it looked like they were going to be having fried apple chips with their lunch again.

03. Beginning
The circumstances under which their relationship had begun was a far cry from the typical scenario of meeting others-no known textbook case ever suggested that the happenstance meeting between a ghost living in a lawnmower and a young boy looking for his toy robot could result in the closest of bonds.

04. Bugs
“Err... a splendid attempt, Rotom, but perhaps you would be better suited to visual performances,” Charon suggested, reluctant to tell the little ghost that its singing was harsher on the ears than a room full of Kricketot.

05. Coffee
The “vacuous, zombie-like behavior of those bumbling Grunts” annoyed Charon and yet he didn’t act much different from them in the mornings, Rotom noticed as it scooted the coffee mug just out of reach, giggling mischievously when the drowsy human groaned in protest.

06. Dark
Team Galactic’s sinister influence was powerful and Rotom feared it-feared the disturbing agendas that Charon had started to follow, feared the increasingly megalomaniacal promises to create a perfect world just for the two of them, and most of all feared the possibility that Charon was lying whenever he reassured Rotom that it remained his only light in a world of darkness.

07. Despair
Squabbles between them were generally petty and childish in nature if not just playful banter, but one argument grew so serious and vicious that it ended with Charon crossly ordering Rotom to disappear, which it did after delivering an electric shock to him; in their anger, neither had anticipated the utter anguish that the separation would bring upon them, leading to a tearful reunion before the end of the next day.

08. Doors
There were some days when Rotom would be having so much fun with the lab games (or “experimental procedures”, as Charon always called them) that when it came time to wrap things up and return home for the day, it would block the doorway and beg Charon to play just one more game, and since he could never bring himself to say no to Rotom, they would end up playing (or “gathering additional data”) for a few hours more.

09. Drink
Sparks of electricity were set off indiscriminately as Rotom floated drunkenly around the room while spouting nonsensical babbles, reminding Charon precisely why he had promised himself to never leave his Pinap coladas unsupervised under any circumstance.

10. Duty
“I know this particular experiment is not your favorite, but I’m afraid that my duties as a scientist must take precedence over fun right now,” Charon explained as he attached electrodes to the pouting Rotom, who grumbled spitefully in its own language that Charon’s science duties were more boring than that old brown suit he kept in his closet.

11. Earth
Every Pokémon had something that they loved enough to go to the ends of the earth to protect and for Rotom, that something was more of a someone, a person whom it considered closer than just a friend-and Rotom knew for a fact that Charon returned those sentiments.

12. End
The dark purple clouds that had begun circling around Mount Coronet’s peak were attracting the attention of every human and Pokémon in Sinnoh, even the ones who knew what the source of it was; Charon and Rotom observed the spectacle from the rooftop of the Veilstone Building with interest and anxiety, wondering if this was how the old world, and everything within it that they had come to know and cherish, would end.

13. Fall
Memories and dates that one did not deem important were forgotten, Charon randomly remembered while he and Rotom were out on a walk through Eterna Forest one evening... suddenly concerned, he turned to Rotom and asked if it recalled what day it was when they had first met each other, to which Rotom nodded and brought him a red-orange leaf from a nearby tree, much to Charon’s relief-the day they had first met had been the first day of autumn.

14. Fire
Charon generally maintained cold and clinical indifference towards people and Pokémon alike, but whenever he and Rotom locked eyes, he would feel like he had been hit with a full-powered Fire Blast.

15. Flexible
Rotom had expected to see less of its friend after his promotion to Chief Scientist, assuming that higher positions meant more work, so when Charon revealed that his new position allowed him to dictate most of his own work hours and hinted that they would be able to spend more time together, Rotom was overjoyed.

16. Flying
The adrenaline that raced throughout its body made Rotom squeal in exhilaration as it soared through the air, and as it gazed down upon its earth-bound friend, Rotom promised to itself that someday it would find a way to let Charon experience these same thrills.

17. Food
After a short debate over who should get the last slice of yōkan, Charon forfeited and pushed the plate towards Rotom with the expectation that the slice would be devoured in seconds, leaving him caught off-guard when Rotom picked the yōkan up in its mouth and brought it up to his own.

18. Foot
Grunts running around in panic, the other Commanders screaming with anger, appliances floating around the announcement room attacking everyone, and all before nine ‘o’ clock in the morning; he knew that Rotom was a troublemaker and yet Charon still had to question how a creature that was barely one foot tall was capable of causing this much trouble in a four-story building a mere five minutes after they had arrived.

19. Grave
In his youth, Charon had a paralyzing fear of cemeteries, but soon after meeting Rotom he found himself able to walk through them without feeling any anxiety; after all, what did he have to fear from graveyard spooks when his best friend was a ghost?

20. Green
The lawnmower was surrounded by a green glow as Rotom merged with the motor, and though he knew it was just his friend in a different form, chills still ran down Charon’s spine whenever Mow Rotom looked at him and gave him that devilish, sharp-toothed grin.

21. Head
Anyone who watched them swore that the two must have been inside of each other’s heads, because there was no other way that the old man could carry on a conversation for hours with the little Pokémon like language barriers didn’t exist.

22. Hollow
The Old Chateau was the perfect dwelling for mischievous ghosts-the place was run-down, abandoned, and full of appliances just waiting to be possessed-but Rotom was too listless to even care, instead spending its days trying to merge completely with a single, broken-down television in an attempt to fill the emptiness that had overwhelmed its entire being when Charon never came back from his trip to Stark Mountain.

23. Honor
The laughter of the grunts and the sneers of their Pokémon were all that Rotom could hear as it collapsed to the ground, its body stinging painfully from the aftereffects of the surprise Shadow Ball, its mind repeating over and over that friends were supposed to defend each other from danger.

24. Hope
As more and more promises were broken because of the attention that his “special assignments” required, Rotom’s disappointed but optimistic hopes that Charon would leave the team for good slowly turned into jealous and resentful hopes that Team Galactic would disappear forever so that Charon would always be able to play.

25. Light
The candle that had their names engraved upon it had remained lit all through the night of New Years’ Eve, bringing a smile to both of their faces that morning as their decades-old tradition reassured them that their relationship would once again last another year.

26. Lost
As young Charon desperately searched all over town for Rotom, he found himself comparing his current situation to the time when he had lost his favorite robot-and he knew in a heartbeat that he would rather lose that toy forever if it meant that he would never lose Rotom’s companionship.

27. Metal
The idea of humans and Pokémon sharing a bond closer than friendship was frowned upon by many in modern society but anyone who considered such bonds “despicable” simply didn’t know what they were missing, Charon surmised as he nuzzled his face against the little metal robot that served as Rotom’s physical proxy.

28. New
Whether it was through mastering an attack that it had been struggling with for weeks, jumping out of a machine in his lab when work grew too tedious, or naively bringing him a Rawst Berry in the hopes that its burn-healing properties could cure his fever, Rotom always found new ways to bring a smile to Charon’s face.

29. Old
“Yes, Rotom, making the oven explode was admittedly entertaining but it was not what I was aiming for, as it seems I miscalculated the data and put in too much nitroglycerin solution... oh, now you listen to me, my age may be advanced but it would never cause me to forget such important numbers... now, hey, I am not an ‘old fart’, as you so ineloquently put it... why, you-get back here, you little imp!”

30. Peace
It was apparent from the start that Charon’s days were numbered due to his age and state of health at the time of his arrest, and by the time that Rotom had discovered his whereabouts and had sneaked into the jail to see him, both of them were in very poor condition; they knew that any contact they shared would be deadly to both of them at this point, but they felt oddly at peace as they embraced one final time, letting the exchange of remaining electricity end their time among the living.

31. Poison
Vials and papers were shoved around carelessly as Charon desperately searched through the lab, violently cursing that blasted Toxicroak of Saturn’s with each second that he couldn’t find the Antidote that Rotom needed.

32. Pretty
Rotom squealed in delight as it wolfed down all of the freshly-cooked Poffins in less than five seconds, leaving Charon with a plate full of blue crumbs and the sudden realization that perhaps the ghost’s interest in the Super Contest’s Beauty Competition wasn’t as unusual as he had first thought.

33. Rain
“How is it, my friend, that your electricity can short out most appliances within mere seconds and yet not cause you yourself to short out upon exposure to weather conditions such as this?” the human asked from under the umbrella as he watched Rotom’s playful attempts to dodge the raindrops.

34. Regret
Apart from sleeping and eating, there wasn’t much else to do in jail except to ruminate on past events, which was something Charon did a lot of in his cell; between fantasies of strangling that annoying Interpol agent to death and recounting his schemes in an attempt to determine what exactly had gone wrong, his thoughts would drift to Rotom; he wondered how it was doing and-with an intense pang of guilt each time it crossed his mind-if Rotom still cared about him even after he had begun to neglect it in favor of his plans.

35. Roses
Charon’s lifelong unpopularity with women had forced him through many a decade without receiving a single rose from anybody on Valentine’s Day, though he always brushed off sympathy from others with the assertion that it was no big deal and that he was never the romantic type anyways; his claims were nullified when Rotom stole every bouquet it could find on Valentine’s Day and presented the giant bundle as a makeshift present, making Charon stumble over his words and blush more furiously than he had in years.

36. Secret
Charon insisted that he didn’t want his research to be leaked so that when it was finally published, he would receive all of the credit for his work; it wasn’t as though he actually enjoyed the time that he and his subject spent together, finding ways to turn their experiments into games, liberated from their worldly worries if only for a short-lived while... no, what an absolutely preposterous notion that was.

37. Snakes
There was an old Seviper residing in the Chateau’s back room which Rotom had occasionally conversed with about miscellaneous topics; whenever the subject of humans came up, Rotom would eagerly begin prattling on about everything that it loved about humans, with some of the qualities it listed being so specific and spoken about with such fondness that the Seviper suspected Rotom wasn’t talking about all humans as much as it was about one particular human.

38. Snow
A mischievous thought got the better of Charon one wintry morning and he knelt down to scoop up a snowball; he smirked victoriously when Rotom yelped in surprise at being hit, but that smile quickly vanished when his victim assumed its Frost Form and retaliated with a full-on Blizzard attack.

39. Solid
Boulders would erode, titanium would corrode, and anything else was liable to explode, but what they shared could never be affected by anything, which was why he took extra care to avoid comparing their bond to any sort of tangible object, regardless of supposed strength.

40. Spring
The vernal equinox had the pleasant effect of bringing Floaroma Town’s entire assortment of flora into full bloom, which made not only for a beautiful view but also the perfect place for a mismatched couple to have a picnic and reminisce about days gone by.

41. Stable
Rotom’s body constantly generated and stored electricity in levels that would be considered abnormally high in any other Pokémon; this proved hazardous when Rotom began to suffer from electric overload, turning into a living time bomb that couldn’t control its electrical outbursts, lethal to touch or even approach... but those dangers only made Charon even more frantic and driven in his efforts to drain the excess electricity and stabilize Rotom’s vitals before it was too late.

42. Strange
Cyrus generally didn’t concern himself with the activities of his Commanders-as long as they remained loyal to him and obeyed his orders, there was nothing to worry about-but he did find it bizarre that Charon always had an excuse to allow and even help orchestrate the impetuous pranks of the little ghost that followed him everywhere, especially since the old man was also notorious for chewing out any Grunts who even so much looked as though they were up to mischief.

43. Summer
The heat from the dog days of summer could be cruel, but Rotom looked forward to them, since those were usually the only days that Charon actively encouraged going crazy with both its Wash Form and its Fan Form-and Rotom was certainly never one to turn down the opportunity to play with him in its favorite forms.

44. Taboo
On the anniversary of their first meeting, Rotom had grown unusually quiet as the day ended and had kept staring at Charon as though it wanted to tell him something (you’re rather introverted tonight, is something the matter?) but instead of answering the questions asked, it had drawn near and murmured softly in a strange tone of voice, gently laying its arms on Charon’s shoulders (Rotom, what are you doing, be careful) and letting a light charge pass between them at the contact (o-oh goodness, I didn’t know electricity could have that effect); everything in the background seemed to fade away as Rotom leaned its face in closer (we mustn’t, no, this is wrong) and allowed another charge to pass between them (something this illicit shouldn’t feel so-).

45. Ugly
Rotom couldn’t care less about whether somebody’s appearance was “ugly” or “beautiful” because societal constructs of that nature were meaningless to it, which was yet another aspect of its naïveté that Charon admired.

46. War
As Rotom let its small plasma arms trail down his body, traces of electricity leaving frighteningly pleasurable tingling sensations wherever they touched, Charon was caught in a fierce mental battle between two conflicting notions-either stopping this before any ethical lines were crossed, before their relationship was ruined by the regret that would surely form from this... or letting Rotom continue, letting it do as it pleased, giving in to his own guilty desires.

47. Water
The lake Pokémon within the experimental tube was eerily calm for something that had just had the gemstones from its tails extracted... it locked eyes with its captor and suddenly the confines of the tube held a mutilated, thrashing Rotom that painfully cried to be released; the tumultuous mix of sickness and terror drove Charon to the sink, where he splashed handful after handful of ice water on his face, trying to purge the projection from his mind, feverishly asserting how he would never allow that to happen to Rotom if it meant his own life.

48. Welcome
The moment Charon set foot in the Chateau, a trail of crackling blue electricity spiraled around him, with its source trilling happily as it welcomed him home in its own special way.

49. Winter
He had warned Rotom that the weather would be exceptionally chilly around Snowpoint City at this time of year, but it had insisted that it would be fine on their hike; when Rotom reneged on its statement, shivering and whimpering from prolonged exposure to the biting cold, Charon could only sigh and shake his head as he wordlessly removed his scarf and offered it to the little Pokémon.

50. Wood
Many years ago, a boy and a Rotom had carved their likenesses into a tree stump, a childish but well-meaning testament to their relationship; many years later, an old man and a Rotom would return to this same tree stump to find that the carving, like their bond, had endured through multiple seasons.
