Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Squall Leonhart x Nida
Theme set: Beta
Rating: PG
#01 - Walking
When Nida came across the Commander pacing across the hallway over and over again, he couldn't help but stop and stare -- and Commander Leonhart was well worth staring at -- and he blushed, guilty, caught in the act, when Squall spoke to him, and blushed even more in pleasure when he was praised for his work for Garden.
#02 - Waltz
He'd watched the Commander dancing all night, with men and women, with everyone, expression tired and exasperated but wondrously patient -- but he was still surprised when Squall asked him to waltz, and even more surprised by the pleasure he thought in saw in those blue-grey eyes when he accepted.
#03 - Wishes
Watching a meteorite burn up on its way through the atmosphere, Nida thought about wishes and shooting stars, and made a wish, just for the hell of it -- either his wish came true, or the odds weren't half as bad as he thought they were, because just as he moved to change Garden's course a little, the elevator came up, carrying Squall.
#04 - Wonder
Nida often wondered what kissing Squall would be like -- he seemed so good at commanding, professionally, and yet personally he was withdrawn, even shy -- but he seemed to loathe such expressions of affection.
#05 - Worry
All through their training, Nida had watched Squall, and he didn't stop now, admiration of his skills and quick rise through the ranks giving way to worry at the dangers Squall now had to face.
#06 - Whimsy
"Where do you want to go?" Nida had asked, so many times, and normally Squall answered promptly, business-like and mercenary, but now he seemed to hesitate -- finally, he smiled, and if he wasn't Squall Leonhart Nida would have called it a whimsical smile, and he said, softly, "Where do you want to go?"
#07 - Waste/Wasteland
Nida flew the Garden low over the desert, as slowly as he could, his eyes trained on one small speck moving over the desert that he knew was Squall and his friends -- in the end he had to stop, and watch them disappear into a building, but that didn't stop the fear in his heart and the fervent wish that the Commander hadn't been so set on getting off here, in these wastelands.
#08 - Whiskey and rum
Nida felt something like a pirate, one hand steering Garden, the other sharing a small flask of alcohol with his Commander.
#09 - War
War was dangerous, war involved sacrifice -- Squall knew that, but at the same time he wasn't awfully keen on it being his sacrifice, which was why Nida was safely out of the way in a non-combat position as Garden's pilot.
#10 - Weddings
There were weddings in Garden, every now and again, and Squall felt like the only one who was completely unmoved by the whole idea -- until he saw Nida, bored and blank, on the other side of the room, as disinterested as he.
#11 - Birthday
He'd checked Nida's personal record, feeling like a stalker, he laid his plans -- establishing a routine visit to Garden's pilot every day, right up to the day -- and then executed them, and on that special day, at the very end of his usual routine meeting with Nida, he leaned forward to whisper in his ear before turning to leave, "Happy birthday, Nida."
#12 - Blessing
Nida had a religion, which was rare enough, but what seemed even odder to Squall was the way Nida would insist on 'blessing' him before every important mission.
#13 - Bias
Always, people would talk to anyone but him, and he'd almost got used to that bias -- it was always a shock to Nida when Squall would talk to him -- even more of a shock when he kissed him, soft and sweet and shy.
#14 - Burning
Nida watched Squall always, his eyes never leaving him, slim and perfect in leather or uniform -- and always feeling the same burning, desire and the knowledge that he never would have Squall for his own.
#15 - Breathing
It made Nida uncomfortable when Squall came up to talk to him, and then remained, silent, but he did like to stand there, all the power of Garden under his hand, listening to the soft sound of Squall breathing.
#16 - Breaking
He tried to ignore it -- the sound of Squall's breath catching in a sob -- but it was hard to stand by silently when the Commander's heart was breaking -- so he didn't, he put a hand on Squall's shoulder, to comfort, but that was all.
#17 - Belief
Nida believed in Squall and he would follow him -- piloting Garden for him -- anywhere, even if Squall had never said a word to him back when they were in training.
#18 - Balloon
A balloon floated up from the festivities below, and Nida sighed -- he could be below, with them, but he didn't fit in -- and nor, he found, did Squall, who joined him up there only moments later.
#19 - Balcony
He'd seen Squall there with Rinoa and once with Quistis, but he never expected to stand there himself, on that balcony -- even if Squall's only sign of affection was the hand covering his on the railing of the balcony.
#20 - Bane
The bane of Nida's life was his unfortunate habit to fall in love with people that were both extremely good looking and far out of his league -- first Quistis, and now Squall.
#21 - Quiet
The thing Squall liked best about Nida was his quiet and total acceptance of him and everything he said and did.
#22 - Quirks
What Squall found so very surprising about Nida was, despite his quietness, he was anything but shy when it came to sex -- he was forceful, and impatient, and sometimes on the edge of too rough.
#23 - Question
Nida never questioned Squall's orders, even when others did -- he loved him, and wanted to please him -- he wouldn't question even when he thought there was a better way (Squall was never wrong).
#24 - Quarrel
They did fight, once, the couple most likely to quietly deal with their problems in private, and bitterness spread from them through Garden; every order was just an order, no social niceties, no praise.
#25 - Quitting
Nida saluted in front of Squall's desk, clearing his throat, but he didn't have to speak, Squall knew; he granted him, in a soft, sad voice, leave to go -- as Nida walked away from what had become his home, he had to wonder why Squall had been so sad to see him go.
#26 - Jump
Nida had thought of jumping often enough, nobody would ever notice, he thought, but as he leaned over the side of Garden, he felt Squall's fingers close around his wrist to hold him there.
#27 - Jester
There was always a joker in a class, and there's a butt to every joke -- Squall might've been the victim of the bully, but Nida was the victim of the joker, because once, he'd tried to stand up for Squall and had been labelled as a 'fag' forever (just because he was gay didn't mean the taunting didn't hurt).
#28 - Jousting
Nida had read stories about knights -- men like Seifer and Squall, only long ago -- with their horses and lances and their sense of honour; it helped him understand Seifer and Squall, but didn't stop him fearing for Squall.
#29 - Jewel
Squall would've liked to compare Nida's eyes to emeralds or something, when he fell in love with him, as that seemed the thing to do, but the problem was, he had no idea at all what colour Nida's eyes actually were.
#30 - Just
Other people protested against Squall letting Seifer go, but Nida helped -- not because he thought it was any kind of justice, or the right thing to do, but because he knew Squall loved Seifer desperately, and because Squall was, after all, his Commander.
#31 - Smirk
Squall was startled when he saw Nida smirk, but glad when it resulted in being pressed back against a wall, Nida's body warm and solid against his as he was thoroughly kissed.
#32 - Sorrow
Nida held Squall tightly when he broke up with Rinoa; he didn't know that sorrow yet, but Squall looked as if he would accept comfort from anybody so he offered, just to feel Squall's body warm in his arms.
#33 - Stupidity
Squall's anger scared Nida, even when he wasn't to blame -- kids he'd been showing the controls of Garden had started messing around up there; Squall was angry because they could have caused an accident -- but the anger was endearing, too, since it came from fear of loss that was more than just professional.
#34 - Serenade
Nida was too shy to do something like serenade Squall, but he did sing, softly, when Squall came up to watch him as he piloted Garden.
#35 - Sarcasm
Sarcasm was Nida's only form of wit, unfortunately, or so he thought; fortunately, Squall liked sarcasm, so it all came out okay.
#36 - Sordid
Nida was ashamed of his home, its squalor compared to the clean halls of Garden, so when Squall gave him a lift home on his way past, he tried to make sure that Squall didn't see anything in particular.
#37 - Soliloquy
Squall knew all about Nida, the shyest man in Garden, only because he'd heard him talk to himself -- knew all of the things Nida wouldn't trust to anyone else but himself, all his hates, his problems, his family, his loves...
#38 - Sojourn
Nida was going away, just for a while, his bags packed, a smile on his face -- but something almost made him stay; Squall Leonhart asked him, softly, shyly, to make sure he got back soon.
#39 - Share
Nida liked to be alone, but he didn't mind sharing his loneliness with Squall, sometimes.
#40 - Solitary
Squall was alone, a lone wolf; Nida wanted to join him, and make him smile, but he was afraid -- too afraid to -- so they both remained solitary creatures.
#41 - Nowhere
When Squall got off the lift at the same time as Nida was about to go, and asked where he was going, he was tempted to say nowhere, because Squall looked lonely, but he shook it off and hurried away without giving him an answer.
#42 - Neutral
Some people thought Xu should have become Commander -- Nida refused to take either side, because although Squall was a good commander and his lover, and he didn't want to hurt him in any way, he wasn't so sure that being a good commander was good for Squall.
#43 - Nuance
Nida wasn't sure, but sometimes, when he was with Squall, he thought that a hint of a smile changed Squall's expression completely, making him look happy instead of apathetic.
#44 - Near
Even though Squall would never say it, he enjoyed simply being close to Nida, sometimes.
#45 - Natural
It seemed only natural to Nida that everybody ignored him -- when, after his field exam, Squall turned to him with a smile and a soft "congratulations, Nida", he could hardly believe that someone had remembered his name.
#46 - Horizon
Sometimes during the war, Nida just wanted to run away, disappear into the horizon, because he was scared to damn near pissing himself with fear, but he stayed, for Squall, for the Commander, as did everyone else.
#47 - Valiant
Nida was not a brave man, but he tried, because he wanted to see a look of approval in Squall's eyes.
#48 - Virtuous
Squall, he knew, was not exactly a virgin or innocent in any way -- the others all whispered that he was more or less Seifer Almasy's whore -- but Nida didn't care, he wasn't all that pure and innocent himself.
#49 - Victory
Nida smiled when he learned that Squall had won his battle -- he had known that if anyone could do it, it would be Squall Leonhart; after all, he'd seen Squall get thrashed by Seifer and still stagger up for more, back in training.
#50 - Defeat
Squall had won a great victory -- yet Nida could still see bitter defeat in his eyes, and he realised that Seifer Almasy had, for the final time, scorned Squall's love.
