Notes: In which an inu-taiyoukai and a mortal girl attempt to forge a life together: the happy moments, the sad moments, the sarcastic moments. Post-canon, modern era.

#01: Comfort
The first time she came to him of her own volition, finally ready to put her overwhelming grief behind her, he’d reluctantly taken her into his arms, only to find himself drawing her closer and closer - making him wonder just who was comforting who…

#02: Kiss
Her mouth hovered mere millimeters from his, close enough to feel the warm rush of his breath as it moved past his lips, and she was quite certain if she didn’t kiss him now, her life would come to a most agonizing end.

#03: Soft
He brought his head to her chest, losing himself in her softness as the tears he’d long since denied slowly trickled from the corners of his eyes.

#04: Pain
She thought she knew what it meant to be hurt - but that was before she saw the depth of pain lurking in his ageless golden eyes.

#05: Potatoes
She found his addiction to potato chips oddly amusing and strangely comforting at the same time; it was the one reminder of Inuyasha that she didn’t mind bearing witness to on a daily basis.

#06: Rain
She never understood his penchant for standing in the rain; what would be considered morbid stupidity for others proved instead to be an unexpectedly soothing ritual for him.

#07: Chocolate
Sesshoumaru quirked a brow at Kagome’s shocked expression, answering her silent question with an amused snort: “My body has the ability to neutralize the deadliest poisons known to man - I hardly think a bit of chocolate is going to kill me.”

#08: Happiness
Happiness was: waking up, finding himself wrapped around another warm body, a strong and steady heartbeat pounding in his ear - a feeling he never thought he’d miss…or have the chance to experience again.

#09: Telephone
“I can think of better things your mouth could be glued to,” he murmured in her ear before curling his hand over hers, swiftly flipping the phone shut as his lips met hers.

#10: Ears
He would never tell her, but he secretly loved the attention she paid to his ears, gently tracing their unusual shape with reverent fingers - at moments both expected (during the first blush of foreplay), and not (standing by the stove making breakfast).

#11: Name
“No,” she gently chided, wiping away her tears as she approached him again, a heartbeat after turning her back on him for what was supposed to be the final time, “not that - repeat the part where you said my name.”

#12: Sensual
He exuded sensuality even in the simplest moments; nothing made her want to wrap her arms around him quite so much as the sight of him sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper, his fingers slowly drifting through his hair as his eyes moved across the page.

#13: Death
“Promise me you’ll never die,” she whispered into the heat of the night, clinging to him as they spiraled down from the first desperate heights of forbidden love.

#14: Sex
She exhaled sharply as his thumb found her clit, unable to stifle the moans of pleasure that escaped her lips as the gentle teasing fell into rhythm with the thrusting of his hips.

#15: Touch
In that first fleeting contact - her fingers brushing his - she was shy and unsure…bringing back to his mind memories he long thought buried, of the last human girl to touch him without fear.

#16: Weakness
“She was always my greatest weakness,” he acknowledged, referring to his long-dead beloved, “in a way no one else will ever be - not even you, Kagome.”

#17: Tears
Nothing had the power to make him feel helpless in a second quite like the scent of her tears.

#18: Speed
If there was one thing he feared, in binding himself to yet another mortal girl, it was the speed with which their time together would pass; her life was bound by the limits of time, whereas it seemed he would drift along forever…

#19: Wind
“I’ve always wondered - what did Kagura mean to you?” she asked, bringing the memory of the wind witch to his mind for the first time in ages.

#20: Freedom
He lifted his nose to the breeze, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, longing for the freedom he’d known in his younger years, when the countryside was his playground - instead of the existence he now led, stuck in a loud, noisy, nasty city.

#21: Life
“Life is for the living,” he said, somewhat savagely, hauling her to her feet as his temper frayed, “so you need to tell me - do you still wish to die for him, or are you ready to live for me?”

#22: Jealousy
The first inkling she had that he regarded her as more than a mere companion in a time paradox was his reaction upon learning of her weekly coffee date with Hojo - though it was quite amusing to witness the great Ice Lord himself actually pouting.

#23: Hands
“Remind me to thank your mother in the afterlife for giving you magic hands,” Kagome groaned, earning an amused chuckle in response as he continued to massage her shoulders.

#24: Taste
Ultimately, she could hide nothing from him: in her kiss, he tasted sweetness and light - and regret, and anguish, and optimism, and hope - a most seductive combination, only adding to the pleasure of an activity he would never grow tired of.

#25: Devotion
“You can’t demand that I forget Inuyasha unless you’re willing to give up your devotion to a dead girl!” Kagome cried hotly, only a beat too late to realize the severity of her statement.

#26: Forever
“Will your heart belong to him forever?” he sneered derisively, “or do you think you could make room for me as well?”

#27: Blood
“You want me,” he smirked, looking far more satisfied than he had any right to be as he pressed his hips to hers, adding in a whisper - “I can smell it in your blood.”

#28: Sickness
Kagome stopped questioning his hovering behavior during her far-too-frequent bouts of the flu, when she learned it was a wasting sickness that had taken Rin’s - and Inuyasha’s - lives.

#29: Melody
“You may be perfect in every other way,” Kagome laughed, reaching down to turn up the volume of the radio, thus earning her a derisive look from him, “but you can’t sing for shit.”

#30: Star
“I wish…to make you happy,” she vowed as she eyed the shooting star, adding with a giggle, “oh, yeah, and to win the lottery!”

#31: Home
His home was a curiosity, Kagome thought - three parts sterile, minimalist living space, chock full of the most modern of modern conveniences - and one part shrine, dedicated to the past: the taiyoukai he once was, and the girl who had been - and probably always would be - the center of his universe.

#32: Confusion
For the rest of his life, he would remember the look in her eyes when he greeted her on the other side of time, instead of his brother - the confusion, the surprise, the utter shock sliced straight through the numbness with which he had surrounded himself since his own beloved’s disappearance.

#33: Fear
“What’s it like to be fearless?” she murmured, her voice quivering as she tightened the brace of her arms around his neck.

#34: Lightning/Thunder
She never thought she’d see the day when something would push him over the edge, so hard and fast that the double magenta stripes would streak across his cheeks like lightning bolts, in eerie complement to blood-red eyes and elongated fangs.

#35: Bonds
“This changes nothing,” she insisted, pressing her bloody wrist to his as she gripped his hand; she looked up, determined sapphire eyes meeting their golden match as she added, “we don’t have forget those bonds - we’re just forging a new one…and I like to think Inuyasha and Rin would understand.”

#36: Market
“I don’t know about you,” she shrugged, oblivious to the growing tide of panic and shock that threatened to overwhelm him as she squeezed his fingers, “but I considered myself off the market a long time ago.”

#37: Technology
It was no surprise that he had adapted to technology fairly quickly, but on more than one occasion Kagome found herself defending some hapless electronic gadget from the ravages of his frustration - they had gone through more cell phones than she cared to admit in their short time together.

#38: Gift
“Consider it a gift,” he murmured, placing the silk-encased heirloom sword in her hands - it was her inheritance, after all, the final piece of the past - one she was, at long last, ready to receive.

#39: Smile
“You shouldn’t hide such a gorgeous smile,” she chided him, before pressing her lips to his.

#40: Innocence
Hers was a beauty couched in childlike innocence and wonder - no matter how much her life crumbled around her, fate handing down one cruel decision after another, she held firm to her optimism, determined to make the most of what she had left.

#41: Completion
It took pushing her to the brink of walking away entirely before he realized just how much he wanted - no, needed - her to stay by his side; she completed him in a way no one else ever would, and that scared the shit out of him.

#42: Clouds
“Your heart’s in the right place,” he relented, gently pulling her away from the pet store window, unwilling to acknowledge the longing, dreamy gaze she gave the puppies that were vying for her attention, “but I don’t know where the hell your brain is.”

#43: Sky
It was the first time in five hundred years he’d ever been serious about a relationship; he caught himself glancing up into the sky every so often, half-expecting to see his mother lurking there…and found himself wondering what she would’ve thought of Kagome.

#44: Heaven
“Not funny,” he intoned, narrowing his eyes, absolutely refusing to believe she wasn’t attempting to convert him to her ‘stupid human religious practices’ after spotting the copy of All Dogs Go to Heaven she tried in vain to hide behind her back.

#45: Hell
It was an unspoken agreement between them: neither would speak of their time in hell, the one experience that bound them together unlike any other.

#46: Sun
Sesshoumaru turned his head slightly, golden eyes meeting golden sun, greeting the morning with his usual customary silence.

#47: Moon
The crescent moon that graced his forehead, a lasting reminder of his taiyoukai heritage, would forever brand him as different in the eyes of her contemporaries.

#48: Waves
Waves of sympathy washed over her as she held him, understanding all too well the uncertainty he was feeling - how, exactly, did one reconcile a past such as theirs with the warring desires that now drew them together?

#49: Hair
He was most amused by her singular fascination with his hair; she never seemed to grow tired of twining her fingers through it while marveling at its soft, silky texture.

#50: Supernova
In her relationship with Sesshoumaru, Kagome realized that there was life after a supernova - their time together would never be as explosive or as naïve or as adventurous as the lives they led (and the loves they shared) in the Feudal Era, but at the same time, there was something to be said for quiet simplicity, implicit understanding, and a burgeoning passion to be shared with a fellow survivor of the time paradox.
