Fandom: Final Fantasy I
Pairing: ThiefxWhite Mage
Theme set: Gamma
Rating: PG
Notes: I played FFI in the Gameboy Advance package, Dawn of Souls. So I don't know whether White Mage and Thief are girls, boys, or something in between. And they don't have much personality. That's what this claim is for.
I decided to have Thief as a girl, and White Mage as a boy -- all boys want to do the healing magic, riiight? xD
#01 - Ring
"Lost something?" she asked, and she had a mischievious grin on her face when she held out the ring to him, his mother's ring, something he was saving for someone worthwhile -- the Mage snatched it back with an annoyed look at the Thief, who just smiled and continued, "Should take better care of precious heirlooms."
#02 - Hero
They had been thrown together, the four of them, with no apparent pattern -- a Thief, a young woman, would be a hero alongside him, a White Mage, after all -- and the White Mage wasn't too sure he liked the company that fate had chosen for him.
#03 - Memory
No one else remembered what they'd done, but the Thief felt a connection to him anyhow, and she smiled and invited the White Mage to her home, and while he was suspicious he was going to end up robbed of all he owned, all he ended up parting with was a wedding ring, his mother's wedding ring, slipped onto the finger of the lovely tomboy Thief.
#04 - Box
"We can't just open a random box, we don't know who it belongs to!" the White Mage protested, but the Thief was already on her knees, getting the lock undone and the chest open -- she tossed the potion at him with an annoying smile, standing up, her face plainly saying 'I don't think anyone wants that'.
#05 - Run
The Thief was quick and fit and she could run faster than all of them, and the White Mage had to slip and stumble in his robe to even remotely keep up, in case she got in trouble -- but then, despite her pretty face, with her hair short and tucked up into her cap, and her boyishly round face, she could almost pass for a boy and, this needled him, could fight better than him anyway.
#06 - Hurricane
The blast of wind hit them, whipping around them, and the White Mage was afraid it was going to sweep them away, like a hurricane -- he found himself hanging on to the Thief (not vice versa), and let go quickly.
#07 - Wings
"I wish I was a bird, and had wings!" the Thief said, apparently randomly, as they trekked through some forest; the White Mage snorted, but he couldn't disagree -- wings would be good, to fly over the forest, and to get away from the intensely annoying Thief.
#08 - Cold
On cold nights, they all huddled together, and it was those nights that the White Mage would find himself with the Thief cuddled up in his arms, the Warrior draped over his back and the Black Mage somewhere at his feet, nearest the fire he had lit with a spell.
#09 - Red
Seeing the Thief laying there, covered in red blood, he tried to deny that all of a sudden he felt very, very scared for her -- but he did hurry with his cure spells, casting more than one and then a potion, helping her up as, groggily, she rose.
#10 - Drink
Sometimes, after seeing the Thief in battle, almost dancing with her quick movements and her laughing, always laughing face, he wanted to just go to a pub, order a lot of drinks, and drown them all at once, just to drown the awkward feeling that he was falling in love with a scoundrel.
#11 - Midnight
At midnight, when the White Mage was asleep, the Thief slipped out of his hold, moving closer to the fire and sighing, taking off her cap to brush out her hair, wondering why she persisted wearing such a boyish disguise when it clearly wasn't going to get her what she wanted.
#12 - Temptation
There was a temptation, when she was around the White Mage, to steal everything he had, just to provoke that interesting, angry reaction he had whenever she stole something, because his face was so funny and so nice looking when he was really roused.
#13 - View
They looked down over the hill together, and for a moment, the Thief slipped her hand into the White Mage's, squeezing his cold fingers, for some reassurance that she wasn't alone -- he squeezed back, but then pulled his hand away as quickly as he could manage.
#14 - Music
He was surprised to find that she liked music, but not surprised to find out that she liked dancing -- her movements in battle, quick and suited to a Thief, also made her well suited to be a dancer, and he wondered if that was what she had been, once upon a time.
#15 - Silk
White silk robes seemed to attract dirt, and taking them off to wash them inevitably attracted the attention of the Thief and her gentle, laughing taunts -- taunts that stung so because he would really rather have liked her to be impressed by him.
#16 - Cover
She wanted to shout to him to take cover, as she danced back from the Gigas' attack, but he seemed determined not to move as he cast his healing magic on them all -- she was so busy watching him that the thing got her with its club; but not a second later, she felt the White Mage's rejuvenating magic bearing her back up.
#17 - Promise
When he caught her with her hand in his pocket, he grabbed it and squeezed it so tight that her face went first red in anger and embarrassment and then white in pain, and he made her promise never to take anything else from him -- he was sad when she started avoiding him because of this, and almost wished he could go back and take back what he'd said.
#18 - Dream
She woke from a dream about him, and found him just inches from her, sleeping close, as they did, for warmth -- he whispered her name in his sleep, and she wondered if, maybe, he was dreaming about her, too.
#19 - Candle
The candle in the tent illuminated all their faces, and she looked around, taking them all in, wondering what had brought them together and if they'd be strong enough to see it through -- the Warrior, quiet but nice enough, the Black Mage, powerful and a little frightening at times, the White Mage, overexcitable, but really rather nice, and herself, a common Thief.
#20 - Talent
His only talent was White Magic, hers was stealing -- he didn't see how they could get on, as a couple, in the real world -- but she insisted that they could, and reminded him that she could steal all that they didn't have.
#21 - Silence
He hated being Silenced, and she knew it -- she wanted to help him, but in the thick of battle, there wasn't much time; he wanted to help her, but couldn't because he was silenced, and she wanted to help him, but couldn't, because if she did she'd end up needing help from him.
#22 - Journey
The journey wasn't an easy one, and at first he worried that the Thief was going to find it hard, because she was a girl -- he quickly found out how wrong he was; he found himself struggling more than she was.
#23 - Fire
Thief liked the fire, and White Mage would watch her poking at it from the corner of his eye -- at first, it annoyed him, and he couldn't sleep, but eventually, he started to kind of like watching her, because she had a smile on her face and she seemed to love watching the sparks fly up.
#24 - Strength
Thief sometimes felt rather inadequate because, fast though she was, she never quite measured up to the Warrior -- it was a conversation with the White Mage that changed her mind; "You're so strong, for a girl," he'd said, and then she was determined to get even stronger, just to show him what girls could be like.
#25 - Mask
Only once did the Thief see him without his mask of being perfectly okay and competent -- he fell, a few metres behind them, and as she turned to go and help him, she saw a look on his face -- hopelessness, shame -- and she didn't go to him, but let him get up himself.
#26 - Ice
She had, he noticed, all of a sudden in one of those moments when it was almost right to reach out and kiss her, ice blue eyes, and he wondered whether the soul behind those eyes was really as playful and carefree as she tried to act.
#27 - Fall
She was quite as chipper on the edge of a cliff as in the middle of a forest, and at some moments, he wanted to lunge for her and bring her close to him, so she was well away from that edge -- he was scared of heights.
#28 - Forgotten
Their whole journey, the whole relationship they had built, was broken and forgotten the moment they won, breaking the cycle of time; White Mage looked at Thief and was disgusted by her and her light fingered ways -- everything, it seemed, was wasted, and yet... and yet he still thought that she had an enchanting smile.
#29 - Dance
In battle, her movements almost seemed like a dance to him -- a movement there, a knife in a goblin's side, another movement and she'd pulled it out and returned to his side, cheeks pink, eyes glittering, as if it was just a dance, a game.
#30 - Body
He hated to admit it, but he loved looking at her body, because she was tall and slim and lithe and almost like a boy, not because she was girlish and pretty and perky or something like that.
#31 - Sacred
Love was, to the White Mage, something sacred and something that shouldn't be wasted on someone like a Thief -- unfortunately, it was somewhat too late for those kinds of thought.
#32 - Farewells
When the Thief figured out what was going to happen, what she really wanted to do was kiss the White Mage goodbye, because he couldn't whine about her doing so if a second later he'd forget all about it, unfortunately, the time loop ended just as she was about to.
#33 - World
A Thief wasn't the person either one would choose to save the world but then, the White Mage had to concede that her weapons did a lot of damage and all he was really good at was healing.
#34 - Formal
After they had done what they had to do, he hoped she would wear a dress, and leave her hair down around her face, so that she looked like a lady -- he would, of course, discard the robes of a White Mage, wear something fancy, and ask her to dance.
#35 - Fever
Sometimes the Thief made him feel so irrational he was sure he had a fever, and so he would cast healing spells on himself -- not that it helped.
#36 - Laugh
She'd never heard him laugh -- always serious, as if White Magic was just a serious business -- so, one morning, she snuck up when he was still sleeping and tickled him mercilessly.
#37 - Lies
He was quite sure that the Thief always told lies, except when telling him that she'd stolen something, so when she told him that she loved him, he refused to believe her.
#38 - Forever
When they first went back into the past and realised the time loop that was happening, he was worried that it would go on forever -- only the Thief seemed sure, but that didn't stop him checking her armour for her and giving her a lecture on being careful, as well as trying to win.
#39 - Overwhelmed
He was so surprised that when he saw her fall, he didn't feel anything, for a moment, he was numb -- then it crashed over him, and he barely had the wits to cast Life on her.
#40 - Whisper
She didn't like to give away too many of her feelings, but she was prepared to whisper them, very, very quietly, and sometimes the White Mage would listen, though he'd never quite believe.
#41 - Wait
"Wait!" he called, without even thinking about it, and as she turned to look at him, not running for a moment, he caught up to her, for once not tripping on his white robes, and she smiled a lovely smile, took his hand, and taught him to run at her pace.
#42 - Talk
At first he refused to talk to her, because she was a Thief and he was of a much nobler sort, the White Mages, but she didn't really give him much choice, always in his face and demanding his attention (and everyone else's, but his the most, because he was the one trying to ignore her).
#43 - Search
She let him look for it for a quite a while before she gave it back, dodging the angry swipe he made at her and waving at him as she ran away -- delighted as he followed, for once.
#44 - Hope
They were the four warriors of light, the hope of the world -- and, he thought, with a sigh, one of us is a Thief -- not much hope there... but it was the Thief who held them all together, in the end.
#45 - Eclipse
When it went dark, he wasn't sure what he feared -- perhaps some creature had eclipsed the sun, and they would have to fight it? -- but she dragged him along, not letting him stop, and finally he realised that if a girl could keep going, he definitely should.
#46 - Gravity
Gravity, he realised, as he fell on top of her, was the cause of all his problems, including the problem which started and ended with her kissing him.
#47 - Highway
At first he didn't really want her to walk on the road with them, since she was a Thief and all, but apparently, she had her uses -- a group of bandits were quickly deterred when they realised she had already stolen all their things.
#48 - Unknown
None of them really knew each other, at the start, which made it kind of hard to talk, but finally the White Mage and the Thief's arguments had everyone interested and everyone involved.
#49 - Lock
"Can't get through," he said, a little disappointed, and she pushed him away and got to work with a murmured 'yes, we can' -- she'd already told them that she could get through any lock.
#50 - Breathe
She could breathe, the fire spell scorching the air around her, making it too hot, making her throat close up -- "Pull yourself together!" the White Mage called, and cast healaga on them all, and she found she could breathe again.
