Notes: Movie spoilers.
.Motion- Jeremy was constant motion-jumping,turning,twisting-while Ray was cooler, not icy, but something softer than motion, and something that Mirabelle learned to love.
.Cool- The soft, cool air hit her as she slipped the red dress on, imagining this as her wedding night, this her wedding dress.
.Young- She's so young, Ray Porter argued with himself as his hand touched Mirabelle's, but why should that matter in a sexual relationship-wasn't it the younger the better?
.Last- A look passed between Mirabelle and Ray-just this one last look, each promised themselves-just one last silent good-bye.
.Wrong- It had taken him long enough-much too long-to realize that the way he had treated her was wrong; in fact, he didn't realize it until he saw her free.
.Gentle- Mirabelle stood between them-the gentle demon and the cute, barking puppy-at the crossroads, wind teasing her hair like a lover, and for once, she wanted to walk across the street, away from them.
.One- Flying back to Los Angeles, Ray's thoughts turned to Mirabelle and the one night, one note mistake-one night with a person who means nothing but ruins everything, spilling the wine in his glass and drowning his dreams.
.Thousand- There are over one thousand people in Los Angeles-one thousand stars, one thousand kisses to be shared between one thousand people-with some lucky to find their "one" and others out there-joining again and again in a never-ending dance of lovers.
.King- They were watching a movie where the husband called himself the "sultan", the king, which made him a pig to Mirabelle, who would have been stunned to find that Ray did the same thing, but she forgave him.
.Learn- Take in this moment, she told herself-remember it; the grief you got from learning about the affair; take it in because you-not someone else-you allowed yourself to have it.
.Blur- Rain drizzled down the window, blurring her view of the chlorine-frangrenced garden, but not blurring his view of her.
.Wait- He wanted to yell after her, to stop the car, to come back in the house-they'd have wine and toast-but he waited too long, self-preservation taking over as he watched her crappy truck drive off.
.Change- Mirabelle despised change, that was why she kept her job at Saks for so long-selling things no one bought, but sometimes people need to open to change to except happiness.
.Command-"Don't go back to him, Mirabelle," Jeremy commanded, "cause if you do, we'll have no chance."
.Hold- What was it about being held that Mirabelle longed for-simply having someone in your bed or was she just missing the sensation of being loved?
.Need- No matter what he said, he felt that he needed her-she was something sweet and soft-pure,like a diamond-that, although he needed her, he was always afraid of hurting her.
.Vision- Ray saw her and analyzed her on the spot: pretty, red-head shopgiral at Saks-no one too interesting-and yet he could see them together, one night...
.Attention- A watch-whey did he want to be her watch:to see her constently and always be present and watching her, or so she could pay attention to him-not constant but always there-like a person trying to catch up with time?
.Soul- Mirabelle's brain and soul told her-over and over again-that Ray was kind, he was gentle and safe, but they had been wrong before.
.Picture- He looked at a picture of her-an angel in a white nightgowl, but he saw a different one-her lying on his red cover, and-when he glanced at Mirabelle now, he was suprised to find that they were finally all the same girl.
.Fool- Ray Porter thought sadly as she drove away; "I was a fool to think I could change myself that quickly, for no one, but I tried."
.Mad- When she left, she expected him to be mad, but Ray seemed to know that she would be back, that they wouldn't be apart for too long.
.Child- The topic of children came up- a nay from Ray, a yay from Mirabelle-she got mad until he kissed her, a kiss that put images of a child called Sweetheart in her imagination.
.Now- Ray constantly reached to the future-the next big paycheck, the next big dinner, the next girl-and he found what he liked in Mirabelle was her passion for the present-this kiss, that touch, the dress-everything made her cry, and everything made her laugh.
.Shadow- She loved to see his shadow on the wall: a perfect outline of the man she loved, with her arm caressing his, making the shadow smile and roll towards her: they never really slept much when they were together.
.Goodbye- The two of them had never said goodbye on their last parting;maybe that was a clue from heaven that they would see each other again, and then their further returns to one another-time and time again.
.Hide- They played hide and seek like children in his home-he found her in the bed, in the bathroom,in the closet, on the couch-and wherever he found her she gave him a kiss, a thanks to him for finding me.
.Fortune- "Fortunes are found in more than money," she told him,"like-whenever a couple walks by, I think they're more fortunate than you."
.Safe- Mirabelle had bought her apartment because it offered safety in a large, noisy town, but nothing beat the safety of being with Ray in LA.
.Ghost- Over time, Ray Porter became more and more a ghost of an old friend and less and less present, as Jeremy's relationship with Mirabelle grew and she began painting again: stars and a city on a hill, a mansion and a small green space, snow, and love.
.Book- "Why are you reading when we could be going out, besides you can read over here," Ray's voice said accross the phone.
.Eye- The difference was in their eyes: Jeremy's could be crazed and unfocused when they were together-looking at everything with no purpose, while Ray's gave her attention-they were calm and cool;they said they loved her.
33. Never- During the time she was dating Ray, she did something she'd never thought she'd do again-put on a costume, step out onto the stage and act-create something that was freeing while trapping.
.Sing- Ray walked in on Mirabelle singing and washing the dishes-along with the radio turned to old pop, she sang "Wouldn't it be nice..."-it was the happiest he had ever seen her.
.Sudden- The change wasn't sudden and fast, but slow and steady, leading her on to a fate that was neither Ray nor Jeremy, but her own.
.Stop- There are two times when life, all the noises and motion-stop and listen around: Christmas and your own private one-like eating dinner at your boyfriend's house.
.Time- As Ray got older, he was diagnosed with cancer then given six months-with them he wanted to find a red-headed ex-shopgirl and her children, to apologize and see her one more time.
.Wash- She asked him why he went out with her-she wasn't rich or pretty, but whenever she did, he would laugh and tell her she was someone who "washed her own clothes".
.Torn- The things we love, you'll find, are torn from us at one point or another, they rip and seperate-sometimes gradually, inch by inch, and sometimes of their own choices, their own mistakes.
.History- He documented their history in his memory because he cared about her-like a parent documenting his daughter's baby years in a pink notebook his wife had bought- to be opened and closed when the daughter is away at college, off living a life of her own.
.Power- "I like to have power over my life and my decisions-a serious relationship would jepordize that," Ray explained to his friend.
.Bother- Very quickly, Jeremy's phone calls began to irritate Mirabelle;once when she picked up the phone, ready to scream, she heard Ray Porter say hello as she sighed into the phone.
.God- Unlike many of the LA townsfolk, Mirabelle-a Vermont girl at heart-believed in God, and knew that He would help her through this, through leaving Ray.
.Wall- The day she didn't take her pills, she felt as if she were the gril in a painting she had once seen- dressed in rags and huddled by a wall, but then the painting became a Surealist Dali and the wall pened up and embraced her.
.Naked- For the first time in the longest time, she was naked in bed with a man who kissed her on her lips, each kiss a diamond gift, ensuring her that this was not casual sex, but real love.
.Drive- This was the second time she had driven away from Ray Porter's house, but unlike the first, she was not blinded by tears this time.
.Harm- When Ray first saw Jeremy he wanted to hurt him, the scruffy twenty something man, but he abandoned this thought as she flew into the man's arms: she was happy and that was what mattered after all this this, her being happy.
.Precious- There are precious few people in this life who you can love and trust, so when you find one, cling to them until they leave, even after they leave- hold on to the memories of them.
.Hunger- Months after they left each other in the gallery, she visited him for dinner, he was cooking Hamburger Helper-and he shoved it in her face,"Hungry?" he asked.
.Believe- He asked her what she believed in and she told him; "God, family, lovers becoming stars, family, pictures coming to life, friends, hard work, art, and love-but mostly love."
