8.Youth: There are days Lewis feels overwhelmed by his DS’ youth and brilliance, but on those nights when Hathaway falls asleep, satisfied and smiling, Lewis’ also understands how age and experience are a good balance.
9. Hide: James had folded the page so Lewis couldn’t see her engagement announcement, and reluctantly he passed the paper to his inspector.
10.Fool: Is kinder was a hall mate: I said “Come meet my girl”; I didn’t notice they had fallen in love by dessert.
11.Sudden: “They’re passing through and I said, “Stop for lunch”; Hathaway’s eyes ask for help.

13. Wall: In the quiet of his garden Hathaway confesses to Lewis “ I used the seminary’s walls to hide my pain when I lost Olga’s love; on the day I acknowledged the truth, I knew I had to leave”.
14. Book: Hathaway had hidden the photo in the book, and as Lewis looks at the smiling couple, he wonders if James will ever be that happy again.

19. Cool: Lewis’ smiles, looking at the wedding photos in the paper; Hathaway, cool and elegant, stands out.
20. Ghost: Hathaway and Lewis grieve for lost loves, and that grief has become a barrier to their future.
21. Hold: Hathaway fights against thoughts of what might have been, but each time Lewis holds him, he envisions what could be.
22. Wait: Standing in the hospital’s A&E, James knew he can no longer wait “ Sir, I think I’m in love with you”,; before Lewis could reply a doctor and a nursing sister descended on them.
23: Learn: “ I spoke to Inspector Howard; their car skidded in the rain, and Is kinder died in the ambulance”.
24. Wrong: Hathaway’s family fill the chapel, pretty ladies in somber hats, handsome men in uniforms and dark suits; Lewis knew they had thought to gather for James’ wedding, not to bury the lovely girl he would always love.
25: Soul: Hathaway had not been Olga’s husband, and the twins were not his, but his love for her binds them to him and they are his.
26. Need: “They are four days old ,Sir, and have not been named yet”, but Lewis saw Hathaway’s cards on their cribs with a scrawled ‘Alex and Alexandra’ on them and knew that they had been written with James’ heart’s blood.
27 God: Hathaway had said “ I want you to be one of their godfathers, Sir”., of course he had said yes, and now for the first time, since Val’s death, he said a silent prayer.
28. Power: “We’re all so pleased that the adoption could be settled so quick, and the Sisters were so kind to name the new wing after Father”, said Tatiana, James’ older sister, smiling as she handed a startled Lewis a fresh glass of champagne.
29. Song: James can hear Robert and the three year old twins in the sunroom singing, their voices fill the house with joy, and his heart with love.
30. Picture: Innocent looked at the photo of -Lewis and the twins surrounded by hounds and horses, and she assumed the booted leg belonged to Hathaway, and thought “They look like a family.”
31.King: As the small brown and white bundle of fur licked Lewis’ hand “She is a King Charles cocker spaniel for Alexandra”, James said his voice full of amusement.
32. Child: Alexandra stumbles, as she tries to catch the fireflies and Lewis reaches down, to pick her up holding her close to his heart.
33. Mad: James seldom thought of Lewis’ “other family”, but listening to him discuss going to Australia for his son Mark’s wedding, James could not help feeling resentful.
34. Time: Lewis smiled, looking at the clocks the twins had drawn, so he would not forget their bedtime.
35.Attention: “No wonder he’s such a good salesman,” Lewis thought, noticing how frequently the words ‘old’, ‘retirement’, and ‘time passing’ came up in his son Mark’s ‘little talks’ with him.
36. Change: Lewis’ children had been making retirement plans for their father, and he began to feel trapped “I don’t want to retire to Australia” he thought resentfully.
37 Vision: When Lewis answered his cell phone, and saw the twins holding their homemade sign that said “Miss You”, everything became very clear.
38. Shadow: Mark watched stunned, as the private jet took off “James thought you might need a ride home ,Sir,” Henry, Hathaway’s older brother had said, as if Melbourne were a stop on the A-40.
39. Wash: Lewis awoke to find James undressing in the silver moonlight; as the light washed over his long, pale body, Lewis thought, “Enchanting”.
40. Precious: “The children are calling you, Sir, because they think it’s my special name for you”; James added smiling “ Of course you are special, Sir.”
41. Harm: Hathaway placed the shiny American penny in Lewis’ bandaged hand; “Alex thought his lucky coin would help keep, Sir safe.”

44. Now: James’ asked angrily, “Who are these people, and why now, after almost four years, are the trying to take the twins?”
45. Stop: When Hathaway’s family lawyer had said “For the good of the children…”, Lewis did not need the distinguished gentleman to finish the sentence.
46. Drive: Lewis took a new route to his daughter’s; since James and the twins were in the country, he didn’t want to take the wrong turnoff for home.
47. Bother: Lewis did not ask for details, after James’ ‘’cousin’’ Murphy assured him, “It was no bother taking care of those people and the twins should be with James.”
48. Never: “The elegant Georgian officer and the scarred solider are my two favorite paintings”, although we seldom discuss the family legend that they were lovers.”, James sister confided to a started Lewis.
49. Command: I want you to always have a legal right to be in the children’s lives”, James said quietly to Lewis, “So I’ve listed you in my will as their legal guardian.
