Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Uzumaki Naruto/Hyuuga Hinata
Theme set: Beta
Title: Snapshots
Rating: G to PG-13 at most
Warning[s]: May have some spoilers for recent manga events, but nothing terribly major.
Notes: Occurs throughout the series, some of them before the Chuunin Arc, some after the recent events with Pain, some in my own head canon of their future, some in a future that I hope will never come to pass in real canon. I think I abuse dashes and semicolons here. Hope you enjoy!
#01 - Walking
“I don’t understand why you have to hide behind those bushes, Hinata, you can just walk with me - actually I’d really like that!”
#02 - Waltz
It was like a neverending waltz, the way she kept moving to approach him, only to turn back at the last minute because of her cowardice; this dance ended the day she stepped in front of him to protect him from Pain, finally able to say, bravely, clearly, "I have always loved you."
#03 - Wishes
“Nah, I have everything I want,” he said, squeezing Hinata’s hand, when he was asked to make a birthday wish before blowing out the candles on his cake.
#04 - Wonder
When he was young Naruto wondered what he had done to have everyone hate him so much; the day he got married he wondered what he had done to be loved so much by someone like her.
#05 - Worry
“I'm still taking her with us on this mission,” Naruto declared to Kiba, “but no, it’s not because I’m not worried about her - of course I am, damn it - but because I believe in her!”
#06 - Whimsy
On a whim, Hinata brought home ten boxes of instant ramen after a mission, and he actually cried out of sheer joy.
#07 - Waste/Wasteland
Naruto’s room was always such a wasteland, a hodgepodge of weapons and trash and (remains of) old books, but one day when he came home it finally looked like a bedroom, for Hinata had surprised him by cleaning.
#08 - Whiskey and rum
Maybe it was just all the drinks she had, or maybe his easy manner was simply infectious, but she forgot all her fears as she danced with him, abandoning all her shyness to the music.
#09 - War
“Someday, all this will end,” he said, anger sharp in his blue eyes as he cradled the dead child in his arms, “I will be Hokage, and I will bring peace even if it kills me,” and she silently vowed to help him do so, even if it killed her too.
#10 - Weddings
"This is by far the best wedding I've ever had," Naruto said as they walked down the aisle after the ceremony, "Er- I mean- that came out wrong, didn't it?"
#11 - Birthday
If all her birthdays were like this, Hinata thought as Naruto and his shadow clones jumped out of their hiding places ("Sorry, I didn't have time to invite other guests!") and presented her with a cake full of candles (sixty of them), then she really wouldn't mind having a few more, despite the constant ache in her already aging bones.
#12 - Blessing
The only thing Hiashi said when Naruto told of their forthcoming plans was, “Well, you better take care of her, son,” and Hanabi added, still deadpan, “or the wrath of the entire Hyuuga clan shall descend upon you, and you wouldn’t want that.”
#13 - Bias
“I-I love the color orange,” Hinata stammered, blushing, when the other girls asked her what her favorite color was.
#14 - Burning
Hinata did not know if she would get mad or laugh when she came home to find their kitchen up in flames, for the fire started just because Naruto was trying to cook dinner as a surprise for her.
#15 - Breathing
“She’s still breathing,” Naruto said through his tears, as he held her limp, unmoving body close to him, “I won’t give up on her, I won’t.”
#16 - Breaking
“I think my water just broke,” Hinata announced with a calm smile, and still remained smiling even while Naruto started screaming his lungs out for Sakura and the nurse Nins.
#17 - Belief
“I’m not scared,” Naruto spat into his enemy’s face, “I know Hinata will save me and kick your sorry ass.”
#18 - Balloon
The world around and below them looked beautiful as they soared above the clouds in their hot-air balloon, but she could not focus on the scenes he was pointing out, for his sunny smile and his sky-blue eyes were awfully distracting.
#19 - Balcony
They shared their first kiss on the balcony of the Hyuuga mansion; Naruto had leaned out too far and Hinata had grabbed him to keep him from falling- the next moment their lips met, and nothing else in the world felt more right.
#20 - Bane
Unlike other pregnant women Hinata never got angry or threw fits whenever Naruto refused any one of her unusual requests-she only smiled at him sadly, and that was always enough to make him agree at once.
#21 - Quiet
He did not say anything when he came home, but she knew in the way he smiled, as if it took all his strength just to hide everything from her, that something was wrong.
#22 - Quirks
“You really are strange, Hinata,” Kiba said in disbelief when he gave her the news that Naruto had returned safe and sound from his mission, “Why are you crying only now, when everything is finally all right?”
#23 - Question
"Would you like some more ramen, Hinata?" was what he blurted out, when what he actually wanted to say was, "Would you like to spend the rest of your life with me?"
#24 - Quarrel
“Oh no, N-naruto-kun, I’m fine, don’t-” Hinata protested when Naruto scooped her into his arms; he cut in, “No, Hinata, you’re injured, damn it, so let me carry you, and no, for the last time, it’s no trouble because I love you, okay?”
#25 - Quitting
"We will never quit," they said at the same time, "it is our ninja way!" as they tried to consume one more bowl of ramen, determined to be crowned as the year's winner of the couples division of the village's annual ramen-eating contest.
#26 - Jump
“Don’t be afraid, Hinata, I’m going to-” but Hinata jumped off the cliff before he could finish, and landed in his arms - “I know, Naruto-kun, I wasn’t afraid at all.”
#27 - Jester
Sasuke rolled his eyes heavenward while Sakura hid her face beneath her hands in pure mortification when Naruto came out of his hut wearing the most ridiculous ensemble the entire village had ever seen, but gods, he didn’t care, for when Hinata saw him she collapsed in gales of laughter, happier than she had ever been since her father died.
#28 - Jousting
Hinata pinned Neji to the ground with one swift movement, and Naruto cheered, immensely proud - “There, see, there really was no reason for you to be unsure about yourself, Hinata, so come on, beat the crap out of him!”
#29 - Jewel
Her eyes were like pearls, he thought as he gazed into them, more beautiful than any jewel in the world.
#30 - Just
It was perhaps the best two words ever printed, Naruto thought, as he looked at the wooden sign that now adorned the carriage that would be carrying them back to their house - “Just Married”.
#31 - Smirk
“Bet you can't beat this, Sasuke,” Naruto said with a smirk, before he turned back to kiss his blushing bride with all the passion he could muster.
#32 - Sorrow
It really was like a fairy tale, she thought, as she watched him slip the ring into Sakura’s finger: Boy searches for the one, Girl wishes she could tell him that he does not have to look far, and true enough Boy realizes that love really was just in front of him- just not with her, but with someone else who stole away the ending.
#33 - Stupidity
“You - stupid - stupid - idiot -” Sakura shouted between gasps as she chased after him carrying a boulder in her hands; “All right already, Sakura, I’ll apologize to Hinata, but I really didn’t mean to make her cry, I swear!”
#34 - Serenade
Naruto’s voice grated at her ears and his guitar playing was simply awful, but Hinata thought the serenade beautiful all the same, and she kept humming his song for days after that.
#35 - Sarcasm
“Oh, no, Hinata’s so not in love with you,” Sakura said, and only realized that Naruto had taken her seriously hours later, when she found him still in the same place she had last seen him, eyes and mouth wide open in shock and despair.
#36 - Sordid
Naruto’s friends were tolerant of his irrepressible happiness following his honeymoon, but after a week of hearing his stories over and over again, each one more intimate than the last, even Sakura ran from him screaming, “Gods, Naruto, please spare us the sordid details!”
#37 - Soliloquy
She would always practice the things she wanted to say to him when he came back, but even when she was alone, the thought of speaking to him made her stutter, and on one occasion, faint.
#38 - Sojourn
"But I was only gone for two days," Hinata said in amusement when Naruto rushed towards her to hug her tightly, unshed tears in his eyes, when she came back from her visit to the Snow Country.
#39 - Share
On their first night together she shared to him her fears, which she knew were ridiculous (but he promised to protect her from them anyway); in turn he shared to her his dreams, which he knew were impossible (but she promised to help fulfill them anyway).
#40 - Solitary
Hinata hated that all she could do was watch him as he sat on the swings alone, crying silently; she cared for him when no one else did, why could she not have the courage to show him that?
#41 - Nowhere
Naruto gulped; there really was nowhere to go, for Neji was already waiting at his house, pale eyes unreadable - “I saw Hinata-sama crying a while ago, Naruto, so we need to have a little talk.”
#42 - Neutral
He kept his voice and expression neutral when she told him that she was getting married, though inside he felt as if he could never be happy again.
#43 - Nuance
“I like people like you,” Naruto said, looking anywhere but at her, hoping she still somehow understood what he wanted to say, even when he couldn’t say it directly.
#44 - Near
She sometimes can still feel him near her, and sometimes she could have sworn she felt his touch on her skin, but she knew that it was impossible, especially not today, on the fifth anniversary of his passing.
#45 - Natural
“Eh, come on, Hinata,” Naruto said as she hesitated and looked at herself in the mirror again, “you’re already really pretty just like that, how many times do I have to say it?”
#46 - Horizon
Her eyes scanned the horizon, but only briefly; she was worried, yes, but she knew he would be back soon, for she had complete faith in him.
#47 - Valiant
All Naruto’s fantasies of being the valiant prince come to rescue his fair maiden in distress vanished when he found Hinata in the enemy’s lair, smiling down at him on top of the pile of unconscious shinobi she had just defeated - “Oh, thank you for coming, Naruto-kun, could you please help me carry these men to the village hospital?”
#48 - Virtuous
"I'm a married man now, I don't like reading those sort of books anymore," Naruto said to Kakashi-sensei, puffing his chest out in sanctimonious pride (he later went back to Kakashi-sensei's place to steal the books and proceeded to read them every night when he was sure Hinata was already asleep).
#49 - Victory,
“Oh, yes, Naruto,” she said, dropping the ring as she threw her arms around him.
#50 - Defeat
He had hoped to beat her this year and finally give her the best anniversary present, but she still beat him, hands-down, when she told him that he was going to be a father -but never before had defeat made him so happy.
