This love story spans nearly 200 years, starting from the start of their relationship in the 1850s to Jack's death in the early 21st century. There are footnotes where further explanation is required.

Comfort - Jack had never been able to sleep on his own comfortably, and always preferred to sleep in the arms of his lover.

Kiss - Their tongues slid together, gently and sweetly, until Jack pulled away, dragging Bernard’s lip with his teeth.

Soft - Bernard loved roaming his fingers up and down Jack’s front, from neck to cunt, stopping to squeeze his small breasts, making him squirm and push up into that touch.. [1]

Pain - Jack didn’t mind when Bernard hurt him - he wasn’t like most boys; the pain just got him wanting more.

Potatoes - Jack laughed as Bernard wolfed down his plate of mashed potatoes - the man could be so Irish sometimes.

Rain - To Bernard, the sound of rain  brought him peace, while Jack was just thankful that they were inside and warm, and not out there being cold and wet.

Chocolate - Jack had lost all desire for the sweet taste of chocolate, while Bernard loved licking it off his lover’s body.

Telephone - “So, you speak in one end and I can hear you miles away at your end?” Jack asked incredulously, before laughing, “We don’t need one, silly, I can talk to you that way with my mind!” [2]

Ears - Jack loved it when Bernard whispered to him during their love making sessions, especially when he ran his tongue around the shell of his ear.

Name - “You obviously had a name before ‘Jack’. What was it?” Bernard asked him one day, to which Jack smiled and replied, “I’ve always been called ‘Jack’.”

Sensual - Bernard moaned and pressed up into his touch as Jack ran his cool tongue over his nipples, stroking his hot pulsating sex with his icy fingers.

Death - “Don’t die,” Jack begged, slitting his wrist and holding it over Bernard’s mouth.

Sex - Bernard loved sex with men, but he loved sex with Jack, which was odd, given the nature of Jack’s sex.

Touch - “Yesss...” Jack moaned and pressed up into Bernard’s touch.

Weakness - Bernard had a weakness for androgynous, younger- looking vampires and Jack had a weakness for Irish men with pot-bellies and beards.

Tears - Jack wiped the tears from Bernard’s cheeks, wishing he could cry too.

Speed - Bernard grit his teeth and fastened the pace, causing Jack to cry out and squeeze around him.

Wind - Jack laughed so hard, he thought he could cry if he could,  “You humans and your flatulence never cease to make me laugh!”

Freedom - Jack longingly gazed at the red sky, wishing he could watch the sun rise again.

Life - While the coppery fluid filled his mouth, Jack laughed sardonically in his mind - how could death give him this much life?

Jealousy - Jack was rarely a jealous man, but he did scowl in envy as looked through Bernard’s family photograph album.

Hands - “Why are they so cold?” he asked after he kissed the palms of Jack’s hands.

Taste - Jack tasted like the cool marble floor of an abandoned palace, while Bernard tasted like home.

Devotion - Bernard searched for a hundred years for his lover, looking for him all over Europe, India and Asia. [3]

Forever - “I’ll love you forever,” Jack whispered in his ear before he left, and Bernard knew he was telling the truth.

Blood - Jack moaned around the bloody wound he had made on Bernard’s thigh, stroking himself and letting his lover’s life force flow through him.

Sickness - A drunk Bernard projectile vomited into the alleyway just after he stumbled out the door, “Better out than in,” Jack mused.

Melody - Bernard taught Jack how to play the guitar, sitting him in his lap and guiding his hands - soon the two were making music together, literally and figuratively.

Star - Jack didn’t tend to wish upon stars, but when he stood in the middle of the pentagram, he crossed his heart and hoped he wouldn’t die. [4]

Home - As soon as Jack saw that Bernard had covered up the windows in his bedroom, he knew that he was home.

Confusion - Bernard liked boys for their boy parts, yet Jack was a boy without boy parts... this was all too confusing to think about while sober.

Fear - When Jack sunk his fangs into him for the first time, Bernard closed his eyes and prayed for the first time in his life.

Lightning/Thunder - Bernard loved making love during a storm - it made him feel like Thor.

Bonds - Bernard rubbed the rope marks on his wrists and remembered the night before with a twinge of lust.

Market - Bernard picked up more grape seed oil from the market, blushing as the vendor lady gave him an odd look.

Technology - Jack let Bernard into the Crystal Palace at night, and the two walked around hand and hand while Bernard explained the wonders of technology to his lover. [5]

Gift - Jack had no need for material possessions but he couldn’t help but smile when Bernard gave him a ring.

Smile - Jack sees sunshine in Bernard’s smile - it’s the only sunshine that doesn’t kill him.

Innocence - For the first couple of times with Jack, he feels like he is losing his innocence over and over again.

Completion - Jack fills that empty hole that Bernard had been trying to fill with drink and food... when he fills all of Jacks holes.

Clouds - Jack wishes he could take a chance when it’s over-cast, but he knows it’ll still kill him.

Sky - Why look at the sky and risk death, when the sky was in his lover’s eyes all along?

Heaven - When waves of pleasure wash over him, he knows he has died and gone to heaven, even if he’s already dead.

Hell - All those years without Bernard - it must be what Hell feels like.

Sun - Jack closes his eyes and waits for his fiery death with the morning sun.

Moon - In the pale moonlight, Bernard closes his eyes and breathes in his lover’s scent, knowing he is truly alive.

Waves - “It’s not that cold,” Bernard teases Jack, waist deep in moonlit water, but Jack shakes his head and laughs.

Hair - “How did you get it that colour?” Bernard asks, running his fingers through Jack’s strange lilac locks.

Supernova - Jack finally feels a tear trickle down his cheek, just before his body bursts into flames.
