Man, I suck pretty bad for a lit person then. I read 60 pages an hour tops for light fiction, and it goes right down to maybe 10-20 pages per hour for really heavy academic stuff. 30 would be pretty average. Guess this means my PhD will take 6 years! When I was a kid I used to skim read fiction and get through at least a book a day and I think there are speed reading techniques like this if you are just data mining. Retention is more important than speed though, not that my memory is fantastic... maybe I should just give up and go back to working on the counter at Waterstone's!

My figures were for light reading and I often can't remember what I've just read. I was including the fact I have to re-read about one page in ten because I simply can't remember it.

If we're talking academic stuff I take about 6 hours to make sense of a 4 page paper! Though that does involve reading a couple of the references.

My speed reading technique is to scan the text for numbers with units and then look at the diagrams.

I'm sure you're going to do just fine. What's your topic?

P.S. I saw your last few Play Digital shows. Truely the end of an era.

I wish they hadn't played music over you while you were talking though.
